Chapter 6 - chapter 6: Terms and Conditions

Serena had never seen a restaurant like this before.

Crystal chandeliers.

Soft piano music.

Tables spaced far apart for privacy.

Waiters moving with quiet precision.

Even the air smelled expensive.

She almost turned back at the entrance.

I don't belong here, she thought.

But before doubt could win, a waiter approached.

"Miss Vale?"

She nodded.

"Mr. Kingston is expecting you."

Of course he was.

Serena followed him through the restaurant until she saw Adrian seated in a private corner.

Perfect suit.

Calm expression.

Complete control of his environment.

Like a man who never left anything to chance.

He stood when she approached.

That small gesture surprised her.

"You came."

"I said I would listen."

"Sit."

She did.

A waiter appeared instantly.

"Order anything you like."

Serena barely looked at the menu.

"Water is fine."

Adrian studied her.

"You don't need to prove anything by refusing comfort."

She met his gaze.

"And I don't need to accept everything offered."

That earned a small approving nod.

"Fair."

Straight to business.

He placed a document on the table.

A contract.

"One year," he said. "Legal marriage."

She didn't touch it yet.

"Why exactly do you need this?"

Adrian answered calmly:

"My grandfather will only transfer CEO authority if I appear stable."

"Marriage equals stability."

"Yes."

"And divorce after?"

"Mutual separation. Clean."

Her next question mattered more.

"Why not marry someone from your circle?"

His eyes darkened slightly.

"Because they would expect it to become real."

Serena understood.

"And you don't want that."

"Correct."

"Why?"

His answer came without emotion:

"Love complicates negotiations."

That sentence told her everything about him.

"So what do I get?"

Adrian slid the contract toward her.

"Salary equivalent to a senior executive."

Her eyes widened slightly.

"Monthly."

That was more money than she had ever seen.

He continued:

"Private apartment."

"Medical coverage."

"Protection from your family situation."

Her fingers tightened slightly.

"You investigated me."

"I prepare."

She expected that.

"What are the rules?"

Adrian answered immediately:

"Rule one: We present a perfect marriage publicly."

"Rule two: No interference in each other's private work."

"Rule three: No emotional expectations."

Then he added the most important one:

"Rule four: No falling in love."

Serena almost laughed softly.

"That won't be difficult."

Something unreadable passed through his eyes.

"Most people say that."

"Most people are foolish."

"Agreed."

She read further.

"We live together?"

"Yes."

"Same bedroom?"

He paused briefly.

"Publicly yes."

Then calmly:

"Privately… separate if you prefer."

That answer surprised her.

"You would allow that?"

"This is cooperation, not ownership."

That sentence reduced her tension slightly.

"What happens if one of us breaks the rules?"

"Financial penalty."

Of course.

Everything had a price.

She closed the document.

"And what do you gain personally?"

His answer was immediate:

"Peace."

Silence followed.

Then he added something unexpected:

"And honesty."

Serena frowned slightly.

"Honesty?"

"You won't pretend to love me."

For a moment she didn't know what to say.

"That sounds… lonely."

"It is efficient."

She shook her head slightly.

"You really don't believe in love."

"No."

"Not even a little?"

"Not even slightly."

Silence settled between them.

Then Adrian asked:

"What scares you most about this?"

Serena answered honestly:

"Losing myself."

That answer seemed important to him.

"Then add a rule."

She blinked.

"What?"

"Add a rule that protects you."

She thought carefully.

Then said:

"If I feel disrespected… I walk away."

"Agreed."

"No questions asked."

"Agreed."

"No attempts to control my personal dignity."

"Agreed."

He didn't even hesitate.

That surprised her more than anything.

"You negotiate well," he said.

"I learned from being powerless."

That answer stayed between them.

Then Adrian said quietly:

"Last question."

She looked up.

"Why did you really come tonight?"

Serena answered after a long pause:

"Because life doesn't always give clean choices."

He nodded slightly.

"No. It doesn't."

Silence again.

Heavy.

Important.

Then he asked:

"Will you sign?"

Serena didn't answer immediately.

Instead she asked:

"Why do I feel like this decision changes everything?"

Adrian's answer was quiet.

"Because it does."

Her heart beat faster.

"And if I refuse?"

"Your life continues."

A pause.

"Just harder."

Brutal honesty.

She respected that.

Her fingers rested on the pen.

But she didn't sign.

Not yet.

"I need one more day."

Adrian nodded.

"Take it."

No pressure.

No manipulation.

Just patience.

"Tomorrow," he said.

She stood.

"Tomorrow."

As she walked away, Adrian watched her carefully.

Not like a businessman watching an investment.

Like a man watching a decision that might change his future.

For the first time in years…He hoped.
