Chapter 28 - CHAPTER 26: Choosing What Matters

Thursday evening arrived quietly.

Too quietly.

The Daily Grind had closed early, the lights dimmed, chairs stacked neatly on tables.

For once, there was no chaos to hide behind.

No noise.

No distractions.

Just decisions waiting to be made.

Lia Henderson stood by the counter, holding the envelope again.

The offer.

The opportunity.

The question.

The door opened softly behind her.

She didn't have to turn around to know who it was.

"…You always come in dramatically," she said.

"…I knocked," Ethan Cruz replied.

"…You opened the door immediately after."

"…Details," he said.

She finally turned to face him.

This time, neither of them smiled right away.

"…I've been thinking," she said.

"…Me too," he replied.

They stepped closer—but not quite close enough.

Not yet.

"…I don't like how we left things," Lia admitted.

"…Me neither," Ethan said.

"…It felt like we were… avoiding the truth."

"…Yeah," he said quietly.

She took a breath.

"…So let's not do that anymore."

That got his full attention.

"…Okay," he said. "…Then I'll go first."

He ran a hand through his hair, exhaling slowly.

"…I don't want you to go," he said.

Simple.

Honest.

Unfiltered.

Lia's heart tightened—but she didn't look away.

"…But," he continued, "…I also don't want to be the reason you stay."

There it was.

The balance he'd been trying to hold.

"…That's what's been so hard," he admitted. "…Because I love what we have. I love you. And the idea of you leaving…"

He stopped, shaking his head slightly.

"…It scares me."

Lia swallowed.

"…You've never said that before."

"…I know," he said. "…I should have."

Silence.

Not empty—

just full of things finally being said.

"…My turn," she said softly.

She stepped closer this time.

"…I want that opportunity," she admitted. "…I worked really hard for it."

Ethan nodded. "…I know."

"…But when I imagine taking it…"

She hesitated.

"…Something feels missing."

He frowned slightly. "…Missing?"

She looked at him.

Really looked.

"…You," she said.

That landed.

Fully.

"…I kept trying to picture my future," she continued. "…The new café, the new city, everything going right…"

"…And?" he asked quietly.

"…It didn't feel right without you in it."

Ethan exhaled slowly, like he'd been holding his breath for days.

"…So what are you saying?"

She smiled faintly.

"…I'm saying I finally understand something," she said.

"…What?"

"…That success doesn't mean much if I'm building it alone."

He stepped closer now.

Close enough to feel real again.

"…So," he said carefully, "…what are you going to do?"

She looked down at the envelope in her hand…

Then back at him.

"…I'm going to say no," she said.

His eyes widened slightly.

"…Lia—"

"…Not because I'm giving something up," she said quickly.

"…But because I'm choosing something else."

He searched her face.

"…Are you sure?"

She nodded.

"…I don't want a life that looks perfect on paper," she said. "…I want one that feels right. Messy, chaotic… ours."

A small smile broke through his expression.

"…That sounds familiar."

"…Yeah," she said softly. "…I think you said something like that once."

He laughed under his breath.

Then—

More serious again.

"…You're really okay with this?" he asked.

"…I am," she said. "…Because I'm not losing something. I'm choosing what matters most to me."

He didn't hesitate this time.

He stepped forward, closing the distance completely—

And kissed her.

Not rushed.

Not hesitant.

Certain.

When they pulled back, both were smiling.

"…So," Ethan said, "…does this mean you're stuck with me?"

"…Absolutely," she said. "…No returns. No refunds."

"…Good," he said. "…Because I wasn't planning on going anywhere."

Behind them, something clattered in the kitchen.

They both froze.

"…Please tell me that's not the espresso machine again," Lia said.

Ethan grinned.

"…Only one way to find out."

She groaned.

"…Of course."

But this time—

She was smiling as she ran toward the chaos.

And he was right beside her.

Because whatever came next…

They were choosing it together.
