Chapter 24 - Chapter 23: “Rain Moments”

Thursday night, and the rain poured heavily against the windows. I was standing on the balcony, umbrella in hand, just watching the city lights blur behind the sheets of water. The storm outside mirrored the storm inside me—my thoughts all over the place, mostly about Ethan Rivera.

"Lara?" His voice made me jump slightly. He stepped onto the balcony without an umbrella, letting the rain soak him. His hair was damp, droplets clinging to his jawline. I couldn't stop staring.

"E-Ethan! You're going to catch a cold!" I exclaimed, rushing forward, but he held up a hand.

"I'm fine," he said, voice low, eyes soft as they met mine. "I wanted to… see you."

The words made my heart flutter, and I realized how close we were—barely a step apart. "But… the rain…" I stammered, my hand reaching to tug at his sleeve.

He leaned closer, his damp jacket brushing against mine. "I like it," he admitted, almost whispering. "The rain… the quiet… being here with you."

My breath hitched. "Ethan…"

The wind blew stronger, sending a few drops onto my face. I instinctively moved closer to him, shivering. Before I knew it, his arms were around me, steadying me against the cold. I froze, my heart hammering. The heat of his body against mine contrasted sharply with the chill of the rain.

"I… I didn't mean to…" he murmured, but his lips hovered just near my ear. His breath sent shivers down my spine.

I closed my eyes, unable to deny the warmth spreading through me. "It's… okay," I whispered, barely audible, letting myself lean into him.

The rain drummed on the balcony, masking the sound of our rapid heartbeats. We stood there for a long moment, close enough to feel each other's warmth, yet far enough to respect the invisible lines of the contract.

"You feel it too, right?" he asked softly, his cheek brushing mine. "This… pull between us?"

I nodded, heart racing. "Yes. Every time I'm near you… I feel it. Stronger than I should."

His hands gently rested on my waist, careful, not daring to cross the line, but close enough that I could feel the electricity. "Lara… I don't want to push too far," he murmured, "but I also can't ignore it anymore."

I swallowed, looking up at him through the rain. "Neither can I, Ethan. I… I want this. Even if it's dangerous."

He smiled faintly, leaning his forehead against mine. "Then let's just… stay here for now. Feel it. Nothing else."

We stood in silence, rain dripping off our hair, hearts pounding in unison. Contract marriage, rules, boundaries… none of it mattered in that moment.

Because sometimes, even a single accidental touch—rain-soaked and tender—could change everything.
