The crypt beneath the Tower of Light was far deeper than Finis had imagined. Theron led him through a hidden door on the ground floor of the tower. The door could only be opened by the light seal on Theron's palm. Beyond it, a narrow, steep staircase began. The stairs descended beneath the desert sand, down into the bowels of the earth. With every step, the air grew colder, and moisture seeping from the walls made the stones slick. Sirius followed close behind Finis, carefully navigating the steps with his small paws. He had now grown to the size of a wolfhound, and Finis could no longer carry him in his arms.
"How deep will we go?" Finis asked, his voice echoing off the stone walls.
"The secrets of Albaris are not hidden on the surface," Theron said. "To find them, you must descend into the heart of darkness."
After nearly an hour of descent, the stairs came to an end. Before them stretched a vast underground hall. The ceiling rose at least twenty meters above the floor and was covered in phosphorescent moss. The moss emitted a dim, bluish light that illuminated the hall. The floor was paved with polished black stones. And in the center of the hall stood a massive crystal sphere. But this sphere was different from the one atop the tower. Its interior was filled with threads of light and shadow, constantly moving and intertwining. It was as if two opposing forces performed an eternal dance within the sphere.
"This is the Sphere of Balance," Theron said. "It was created by the last mages of Albaris to stop the Shadow Legion. But it also contains their greatest secret."
Finis approached the sphere. Sirius stood beside him, his fur bristling, growling. It was as if something inside the sphere disturbed him.
"What is the Shadow Legion, Theron?" Finis asked. "Are they simply creatures of pure evil? Or... do they have a purpose?"
Theron drew a deep breath. The old scribe's eyes fixed on the dancing light and shadow within the sphere. A long silence followed. Then he began to speak.
"The Shadow Legion is one of the oldest entities in this world. They emerged at the dawn of the First Age, when the gods still walked Eterra. But they were not beings created by the gods. They were born from the world's own darkness, from pure shadow energy seeping through the cracks in the fabric of the universe. At first, they were mindless, shapeless entities. They merely wanted to exist, to spread, to consume. Wherever there was light, they were there to extinguish it. It was their nature, just as fire burns and water wets."
Theron stepped closer to the sphere. He touched its surface with his hand. The threads of light and shadow within quickened at his touch.
"But then, something happened. The Shadow Legion gained consciousness over time. As they observed the world, they began to understand the balance between light and darkness. And they realized this: Light, if left unchecked, could destroy everything. Just like darkness. Too much light blinds, burns, and scorches. Too much darkness suffocates, freezes, and consumes. Balance was the only way to survive. And to preserve this balance, they adopted a purpose. They saw themselves as the guardians of the world. To prune the light when it grew too strong. To limit the darkness when it spread too far."
Finis listened in astonishment. "So they... aren't evil?"
"Evil depends on one's perspective," Theron said. "They are willing to do anything to preserve balance. They are ruthless because they believe mercy disrupts balance. That is why they destroyed Albaris. Albaris was a pure source of light. The immortals, with their healing power, could erase all suffering from the world, even conquer death itself. But that would upset the balance. If there is no death, life loses its meaning. If there is no pain, happiness becomes worthless. The Shadow Legion believed that Albaris's growing light would tear the fabric of the universe, turning everything into pure nothingness. And so, they destroyed the city."
Finis's head was spinning. For so long, he had thought of the Shadow Legion as pure evil. But now he was learning that they too had a purpose, a belief. This changed everything.
"And now?" he asked. "Why are they returning?"
Theron withdrew his hand from the sphere. "Because the balance has been disrupted once more. But this time, it is not the light that has grown too strong, but the darkness. During the thousands of years they remained sealed in the void, the Shadow Legion realized that their own darkness had begun to consume them. If they cannot return and restore the balance, not only they, but the entire universe will perish. They are returning to prevent this. But their methods... their methods remain ruthless. They want to extinguish the light entirely, to let darkness reign forever. Because they no longer trust the light. After what Albaris did to them, they believe the light is just as dangerous as the darkness."
"So... we have to stop them. But at the same time, they have a valid reason."
"That is why your trial is so important," Theron said. "The Sphere of Balance shows you not only the light but also the shadow. As the Last Seed of Albaris, you must represent not just the light, but balance itself. If you choose only the light, you will be no different from the Shadow Legion. If you choose only the darkness, you will join their ranks. But if you choose balance, perhaps you can save both sides."
Finis looked at the Sphere of Balance. The threads of light and shadow within called to him. Sirius had stopped growling and now stared at the sphere with curiosity. Finis took a deep breath and placed his hands on the cold surface of the sphere.
And the world, for a moment, stood still.
Finis found himself in an infinite void. There was no up, no down. Only an endless nothingness stretching in every direction. And in the center of this void stood two figures. One was made of pure white light, the other of absolute darkness. Both were in human form but had no faces. Only their voices echoed through the emptiness.
The light figure spoke. Its voice was like a thousand bells ringing at once—beautiful, yet deafening. "I am the Light of Albaris. I am the source of healing, mercy, and life. Choose me. Cleanse the world of pain, death, and darkness. Bring eternal peace."
The shadow figure spoke. Its voice was like the moan of wind from a deep chasm—frightening, yet strangely soothing. "I am the Shadow of the Legion. I am the source of balance, justice, and truth. Choose me. Extinguish the blinding brilliance of the light. Accept the world as it is. With pain, with death, with darkness. For without them, light is meaningless."
Finis stood caught between the two figures. Both were right. Both were wrong. Light wanted to eliminate suffering, but that would also eliminate the meaning of life. Shadow wanted to preserve balance, but that meant turning a blind eye to the suffering of innocents.
"I... cannot choose either of you," Finis said. "And I cannot reject either of you."
The light figure flickered in astonishment. "Then you will perish. One who stands between cannot be anything."
The shadow figure laughed a dark laugh. "He was nothing to begin with. A porter on Earth, a castaway here. He belongs neither to light nor shadow. Let him be destroyed."
But Finis did not give up. A third option rose from within him. Neither pure light nor pure darkness. A mixture of both. Balance. In his palms, a golden light appeared. But this light was different from the healing light he had used before. Within it lay both warmth and coolness, both life and death, both mercy and justice. This was the Twilight Light.
The light figure recoiled in fear. "This... This is impossible! Light and shadow cannot coexist!"
The shadow figure snarled in fury. "You disrupt the order! This is forbidden!"
Finis spread the Twilight Light toward both figures. The light enveloped them, merging them together. The two figures screamed as they intertwined, becoming a single entity. Neither light nor shadow; the balance of both. And this new being smiled at Finis.
"You are the true Bearer of Light," it said. "Neither merely a healer nor merely a destroyer. You are the one who will bring balance. Go and show the Shadow Legion that they too can be saved. For they are not only darkness. They, too, were once light."
When Finis opened his eyes, he was kneeling before the Sphere of Balance. Sirius was licking his face, whining with concern. Theron stood beside him, watching with curiosity.
"What did you see?" Theron asked.
Finis rose to his feet. The faint glow of the Twilight Light still lingered in his palms. "I will stop the Shadow Legion," he said. "But not by destroying them. By reminding them of balance."
Theron's eyes widened. "That... is a very dangerous path. They will not listen to you."
"They have to. Because there is still a sliver of light within them. They have simply forgotten it."
That night, Finis wrote in his journal:
"Today, I learned that my enemy is not truly my enemy. The Shadow Legion fights to preserve balance. But their methods are wrong. Just as Albaris's methods were wrong. Both are extremes. And I stand between them, in the twilight. Perhaps the only way to end this war is to convince both sides to embrace balance. Sirius stood with me today before the Sphere of Balance. He has avenged his mother, but now he will fight for a greater purpose. For balance. And I will guide him on this path."
When he closed his journal, dawn was breaking outside. The crystal sphere atop the Tower of Light caught the first rays of the sun, casting a golden light across the desert. Finis took Sirius and went out to the courtyard. The others were already there. Torin's chest wound had healed, and he was sharpening his axe. Liriel had crafted a new bow and was oiling it. Mira wore the royal seal around her neck and was honing her swords. Kael sat in a corner, meditating, nurturing the light within him.
Finis approached them. "Training is over," he said. "It is time to face the Shadow Legion. But not to destroy them. To show them there is another way."
The group fell silent for a moment. Then Torin hefted his axe onto his shoulder. "I'm in. I haven't fully unraveled this Secret of Iron yet, but I'm eager to learn what it is."
Liriel smiled. "I'm in too. The Lament of Light can be sung not only to destroy darkness, but to understand it."
Mira touched her necklace. "My mother would have wanted me to fight not for vengeance, but to restore the honor of my people. I'm in."
Kael opened his eyes. "I know the Shadow Legion from the inside. I can guide you. And perhaps I can show them their mistakes."
Sirius stood beside Finis, drew a deep breath, and for the first time, roared like a true lion. The sound echoed through the courtyard, shaking the stones of the tower. He was no longer a cub, but a warrior.
Finis took out his journal and opened a fresh page. The heading: "The Final Journey - The Twilight Path."
And he began to write. This was not the end of the story, but a new beginning.
