Shaking off her thoughts, Daenerys sat up in bed and began to wash up, preparing to retire early. Suddenly, she heard two muffled thuds outside the tent, followed by the door being pushed open. An Unsullied soldier, wearing a spiked helmet, strode in.
"Who are you?" Daenerys demanded sharply. Grey Worm and the Unsullied would never enter her tent without announcing themselves.
"Your Majesty, it is I, Daario!" The man removed his spiked helmet, revealing a charming smile. He was halfway through his smile when he spotted Drogon perched on Daenerys's shoulder, his expression freezing.
He had expected to find maids in Daenerys's tent, but he hadn't anticipated the little dragon being there with her, separate from the other two.
Having witnessed Drogon's swift and precise throat-slitting of Mero, and having fought in numerous battles in the arenas of Meereen, Daario felt no confidence in facing the dragon.
"Commander Daario, what brings you to my tent at this late hour?" Knowing Daario had snuck in and was likely hostile, Daenerys showed no fear.
After all, she had seen Drogon intimidate the three members of the Second Sons earlier that day. What threat could one Daario pose?
Seeing that Drogon had no intention of attacking him for his intrusion, Daario gradually regained his composure.
"Your Majesty, I originally came to assassinate you. This was the plan of Captain Mero and Vice-Captain Prendahl of the Second Sons. However, I disagreed with their decision."
"It seems you've found a better way," Daenerys said, studying Daario.
"Yes, I've decided to bring them to you personally."
Daenerys frowned slightly, looking at Daario in confusion, unsure of what he meant.
*Thump!*
After speaking, Daario removed the cloth bag from his shoulder and dumped its contents onto the ground. Two human heads rolled out—one with a long scar across its face, the very images of Mero and Prendahl.
Daenerys hadn't expected Daario to use such a brutal method to pledge his loyalty. It reminded her of Xaro, and she couldn't help but furrow her delicate brow.
Drogon, however, remained indifferent. He knew Daario's ambition was to serve Daenerys as her queen.
"Then what do you want?" Daenerys asked, wanting no more unpredictable dangers close to her.
"Your grace and beauty have captivated me!" Daario's eyes shone with fervor.
Meeting his gaze, Daenerys said, "I killed the last man who told me that."
"He could never be as sincere as I am!" Daario said with a smile, completely unconcerned.
Daenerys didn't doubt his words. She saw nothing in his eyes that she hadn't seen in Xaro's, but given the gravity of the situation, she wouldn't easily take in someone who had casually killed her commander.
Moreover, she wouldn't agree to his request. She was no longer the Mother of Dragons who had only her young dragons and herself to rely on.
Her dragons could now slaughter scores of soldiers at once, she had the Queen's Guard, and commanded nearly ten thousand elite troops. She no longer needed to sacrifice herself for a few ships.
"I cannot agree to your terms," Daenerys refused decisively.
"Your decision is premature, as you don't yet know me," Daario replied, seemingly unfazed by her response.
Daenerys remained unmoved by his fiery gaze and honeyed words. "You so easily killed the man who led you. How can I trust that you won't kill me one day?"
"I joined the Second Sons not to serve the arrogant Mero or the incompetent Prendahl, but to hone my skills," he explained. "As for you, I offer only my true heart and sincerity. They would never allow me to harm you."
What a lovesick fool! Drogon couldn't help but scoff inwardly at Daario's overly affectionate and cloying words to the Dragon Mother.
"State your oath of fealty!" Daenerys, also growing impatient with Daario's effusions, finally snapped.
Drawing his Arakh from his waist, Daario knelt on one knee, resting the curved blade on his knee.
"The Second Sons are yours, Your Majesty. My blade, my heart, my life—all belong to you!"
Drogon: *...*
"I accept your fealty!" Daenerys declared solemnly.
Her primary reason for accepting Daario was that Drogon knew of his existence and hadn't objected to her accepting his loyalty earlier.
Though Daenerys still didn't fully understand what a "lover" was, she assumed Daario wouldn't harm her. Otherwise, Drogon would surely have intervened.
"Your Majesty, I propose we attack Yunkai tonight," Daario said, rising to his feet.
"Why tonight?" Daenerys asked, puzzled. She didn't suspect Daario of any ill intent.
Daario explained, "News of Mero and Prendahl's deaths hasn't reached the Wise Masters of Yunkai yet. If they learn of it, their defenses will be tightened."
"And I know of a small gate that leads into the city. If I bring two or three men inside, we can open the main gates from within, and the army can enter Yunkai."
"A small gate! Is it unguarded?" Daenerys asked, feigning ignorance.
"It is guarded, but by very few men. A few skilled fighters could handle them easily."
Hearing Daario's words, Daenerys couldn't help but frown. Varys's little birds had told her something different. Was he trying to set a trap for her? Her heart was torn.
She glanced secretly at Drogon, who remained motionless. Should she trust him or Varys? The dilemma deepened. After a moment's hesitation, she said, "I'll discuss this with Jorah and the others before making a decision."
"Of course," Daario replied.
In the war council chamber, Barristan, Jorah, and the others were puzzled by the late-night summons. When they saw Daario, they nearly drew their swords.
Daenerys explained Daario's presence and the reason for the meeting, easing their suspicions. Then she presented Daario's plan.
After hearing the plan, Jorah and the others exchanged suspicious glances at Daario. He sensed something was amiss.
"When did you last visit that small gate?" Jorah asked.
"I've never been there myself, but I know some of the Second Sons mercenaries use the side gate at night for... entertainment."
Jorah listened, then glanced at the others.
"Are you suggesting we send in our best fighters to catch them in one fell swoop?" Barristan interjected.
The only fighters Daenerys could call "best" were her generals. If that was the plan, she'd be left with no one to command.
"You know about the side gate?" Daario asked, realizing why they were looking at him that way—and why Daenerys had reacted so strongly.
The group fell silent, turning to Daenerys to let her decide.
"The gate is now heavily guarded by soldiers. Sending in a few men would be suicide!" Daenerys fixed Daario with a stare, waiting for his explanation.
Daario's face paled slightly. He had just sworn his loyalty to Daenerys, and now he was leading her generals into a trap. Whatever he said would sound hollow.
After a moment's hesitation, he replied, "Perhaps the gate was only put under heavy guard after those mercenaries left."
