The Ballet Resident, its hair in a round, sleek bun, watched Mai Mingle for several seconds.
"…Well, well. Cunning as they come with age," it said unhurriedly. "But you're reading too much into it. At this point, the die is cast. What leverage do I have to make demands? I'm just here to see how this little drama plays out. Are we residents not allowed to be curious?"
After a thought, it added, "If my companion were here, it might try to take advantage of the situation… But me? I'm quite adaptable. I just go with the flow."
Mai Mingle bit back the words, 'You have a companion?' She wasn't Jin Xueli; she had to stay firmly on topic.
"You're the last ones who want to see Kai Luonan win, aren't you?"
She pressed her weight against Chaisi's hand and said through clenched teeth, "If this goes on, him winning the ruling game will be a foregone conclusion. Can you live with that?"
