Chapter 1 - New House, New Surroundings

Deep into the night, Gwen was still awake, busy with her homework. It was a Saturday, but she hadn't been able to do her assignments during the day because her parents and two siblings were occupied with moving into their new house. The area wasn't scary at all they were in the city, and there were plenty of neighbors around. In the afternoons, the streets were filled with people, and some youths would hang out outside until 8 p.m. due to a local curfew.

By the way, their new house was big it had a second floor and three bedrooms: one for her parents, one for her two younger brothers, and Gwen had her own room. Being the eldest, Gwen was very diligent in her studies, determined to achieve her dreams.

As Gwen read her book, her mother Alma knocked on the door and brought her some milk.

"Sweetheart, you can finish that tomorrow. It's midnight already; you need to rest."

"Okay, Mom, I'm almost done. After this, I'll sleep, I promise!"

"All right, dear. Your father and I are going to sleep now, so make sure you finish up."

"Thanks for the milk, Mom."

Her mother chuckled and soon left.

After finishing her homework, Gwen started tidying up her things. But as she closed the window, her attention was suddenly caught by a magnificent, enormous tree in the distance about a kilometer from their house. The tree seemed almost alive.

She stared at it for several minutes, lost in thought, when suddenly a loud thud echoed from their roof, startling her.

"BLAAAG!!"

A black cat had jumped through her window.

"Haay! That cat really scared me. I thought something terrible happened. I

better get some sleep."
