Chapter 2 - Coffee Steam and Ashes of Questions

It was past two in the morning in the quiet suburbs of London. Philip sat by his large window, watching raindrops race across the glass like microscopic creatures searching for an escape. In his hand was a cup of coffee that had long since gone cold, and in his head, there was a silent noise that would not stop.

"What is the point of all this, Kevin?" Philip asked without turning around.

His old friend Kevin, who lived in the apartment opposite, was sitting on the worn leather sofa, flipping through the pages of an old book. Kevin lifted his glasses and looked at Philip. "All this? Do you mean the rain, the cold coffee, or your failed attempts to fix the radio?"

"I mean waking up," Philip said with a slight edge. "Waking up, working eight hours, coming back, worrying about bills, then sleeping just to repeat the same thing. Are we just gears in a machine that doesn't build anything? Is there any real meaning in living?"

Kevin closed his book quietly and got to his feet. He walked to the small kitchen, poured himself a glass of water, then stood beside Philip at the window.

"You know I spent forty years teaching physics, right?" Kevin began in a calm tone. "From a scientific point of view, there is no equation in the universe saying that one person's life must change the course of a galaxy."

Philip fell silent, feeling the coldness of those words tighten his chest. But Kevin continued:

"Still, there is another kind of 'purpose.' Look at that stray cat over there, under the neighbors' balcony." Kevin pointed outside. "It's shaking, isn't it?"

Philip nodded.

"A little while ago, Mrs. Clara put down a can of tuna and an old piece of cloth for it. For the universe, that event equals zero. But for that cat, in that exact moment, that was the highest possible purpose of existence. Beauty is not in the final destination, Philip, but in the unnecessary details."

Philip turned to him, furrowing his brows. "The unnecessary details?"

"Yes." Kevin smiled faintly. "The laugh that escapes you against your will when you see something funny, the taste of the first sip of coffee in the morning, the comfort of laying your head on the pillow after a hard day, standing here right now and asking me this complicated question… These things do not 'benefit' evolution, and they do not increase your wealth, but they are what turn life into an experience instead of just a biological function."

Silence filled the room again, but it no longer felt as heavy as before.

"So the point is that I can taste the bitterness in this coffee?" Philip asked with a touch of gentle sarcasm.

Kevin laughed and patted his shoulder. "And the point is also that you have an old, boring friend like me to ruin your nighttime drama. Life is not a mystery waiting to be solved, Philip. It is a completely random chance for us to witness this world… and witnessing itself is enough."

Philip looked back at the rain. The questions in his head had not changed, and he had not found the "great meaning," but he felt a sudden urge to warm his coffee and enjoy the scent of cardamom rising from it. Maybe, for today at least, that was enough.
