Chapter 31 - Part 29

After a few days, something between them no longer felt like it was waiting in silence.

It felt like it was slowly gathering shape.

Not rushed.

Not forced.

Just inevitable in the way things become when neither side is willing to step away anymore.

[Anxin POV – Early Evening | Hospital Exit]

Anxin finished her shift earlier than expected that day.

For a moment, she stood outside the hospital steps, adjusting her coat, the wind brushing lightly against her face, but instead of heading home like she normally would, she found herself hesitating in a way she didn't fully understand.

Her phone was in her hand.

No message.

No plan.

And yet—

her feet already moved.

Hedi's office.

"…why am I here," she muttered softly, though she didn't stop walking.

[Hedi POV – Office]

Hedi was reviewing documents when he sensed her arrival before anyone announced it.

Not through sound.

Through timing.

Because she wasn't scheduled.

Which meant she chose this.

That alone made him pause.

When she entered, he looked up immediately.

"You finished early," he said.

"Yes," she replied, closing the door behind her without hesitation.

A pause.

"…I came here instead."

That sentence lingered longer than it should have.

Anxin walked deeper into the office, scanning it casually.

"So this is where you disappear all the time," she said lightly.

"I do not disappear," he replied.

"You do," she said, turning slightly toward him, "just not in places I can follow."

That made him pause for half a second.

Not visibly.

But internally.

She leaned slightly on the edge of his desk now.

Comfortably.

Like she belonged there.

That alone changed the tone of the room.

Before he could respond, the office door opened slightly.

A female staff member entered briefly with files.

She stopped when she saw Anxin inside.

And then—

she looked at Hedi.

Just for a second longer than necessary.

Not bold.

Not obvious.

Just… human attention.

But Anxin noticed.

Immediately.

Something in her expression shifted subtly.

Not anger.

Not irritation.

Something quieter.

Sharper.

She straightened slightly from the desk.

"…who is she?" Anxin asked casually.

Hedi didn't look away from her.

"Staff."

"That was very general."

"She does not matter."

That answer should have ended it.

But it didn't.

The staff member left quickly after placing the files.

But Anxin's gaze followed her for a fraction too long.

Then—

she stepped closer to Hedi.

Not aggressive.

Not dramatic.

Just closer.

"…you talk to her often?" she asked softly.

"No."

A pause.

"…does she always look at you like that?"

He finally looked at her.

"…like what?"

"That second longer."

Silence.

Then Hedi said calmly:

"I did not notice."

" Why didn't she knocked."

" I'll make sure she does next time."

"hmm..."

That answer made Anxin's lips press together slightly.

Hedi POV –

He noticed something then.

Not jealousy.

Not anger.

But awareness.

She didn't like it.

Not logically.

Emotionally.

That mattered.

And for the first time—

he found himself mildly curious about why.

Anxin suddenly moved forward.

Not warning.

Not hesitation.

Just instinct.

And hugged him.

Lightly.

But fully.

Hedi froze for half a second.

Not because of shock.

Because of stillness breaking pattern.

"…what are you doing," he asked quietly.

"I'm correcting something," she replied against his chest.

"…what?"

"I don't know yet."

That made him pause again.

Then slowly—

his hand moved.

Resting lightly on her back.

Not pulling.

Not restricting.

Just there.

And that was new.

For both of them.

Anxin pulled back slightly after a moment.

Realizing what she had just done.

Her expression changed instantly.

A faint blush rising slowly across her cheeks.

"…I wasn't planning to do that," she said quickly.

Hedi looked at her.

For longer than usual.

"…you did it anyway."

"That's not helpful."

"It is accurate."

The silence that followed was different now.

Softer.

Heavier.

More aware.

Anxin turned slightly away first.

Then spoke quietly:

"You've been acting different lately."

"I have not changed."

"That's what people say when they don't want to admit it."

He didn't deny it immediately.

That alone was different.

"…what kind of change do you think it is?" he asked finally.

She hesitated.

Then turned back toward him.

"I think…" she said slowly, "you're starting to stop controlling how you feel around me."

That sentence hit deeper than intended.

Hedi didn't respond immediately.

Because she was right.

And he knew it.

He stepped closer.

Not invading.

Just closing space that no longer felt like it needed boundaries.

"I have been thinking," he said quietly.

"That sounds dangerous," she replied softly.

"It is not."

A pause.

"It is unavoidable."

She looked up at him.

"…about what?"

And this time—

he didn't stop at the edge.

"About what it means," he said slowly, voice lower than usual, "when I stop being able to treat your presence as temporary."

Silence.

No interruption.

Just stillness.

Anxin didn't speak immediately.

Then she stepped closer.

Small.

Intentional.

"And what does that mean to you?" she asked softly.

His gaze held hers.

"…that I start staying even when I don't plan to."

That was it.

Almost confession.

Fully formed.

Barely held back.

But instead of continuing—

he stopped.

Not because of interruption.

But because of awareness.

Anxin looked away slightly first.

"…that was almost something," she said quietly.

"Yes."

"…why didn't you finish it?"

A pause.

"…because you were listening."

That made her pause.

Then she smiled faintly.

"…that's not a reason to stop."

"It is for me."

The space between them felt warmer now.

Less structured.

More real.

Anxin reached up again slightly—

this time fixing his collar lightly.

Not teasing.

Not casual.

Just gentle.

"You're becoming harder to read," she said softly.

"And you are becoming easier to notice," he replied.

That made her smile again.

She didn't move away immediately.

Neither did he.

And for a long moment—

they simply stayed there.

Closer than before.

Not defined.

Not confessed.

But no longer pretending they were not changing.
