The sea was calm.
Too calm.
The ship moved forward effortlessly, pushed by a steady wind that demanded nothing from them.
And even so… the atmosphere wasn't light.
Nami had the map spread out in front of her, tracing routes with almost obsessive precision. It wasn't just navigation.
It was control.
Carina rested near the mast, watching without getting too involved… though her eyes missed nothing.
Caelum stood by the railing, staring at the horizon.
But he wasn't seeing the sea.
—"…that wasn't luck."
The words came out quietly.
Almost lost.
He lowered his gaze to his hands.
He remembered the strike.
That exact moment.
The clean movement.
Precise.
Too precise.
—"My body… moved before I did."
His fingers tensed slightly.
A small spark jumped between them.
Brief.
Unstable.
—"…and it's not the first time."
—"We have a problem."
Nami's voice pulled him out of his thoughts.
She didn't raise her voice.
She didn't need to.
Carina turned her head slightly.
—"Another one?"
Nami didn't answer immediately. She turned the map toward them.
—"That island to the north."
Caelum looked up.
He didn't need the name.
—"Gaznack."
Nami nodded.
—"If what we heard is true, he's not just a pirate with money."
She pointed at several routes.
—"He controls this."
Lines.
Flows.
Paths connecting islands.
—"Which means he controls who passes… and who doesn't."
Carina let out a soft breath.
—"And how does that affect us?"
Nami glanced at her.
—"If we want to keep moving without taking pointless detours… it affects us."
Silence.
Caelum crossed his arms.
—"We don't really know what kind of person he is."
Carina smiled faintly.
—"That's never stopped anyone."
She stood up slowly.
—"The real question is something else."
She looked at both of them.
—"Is it worth it?"
—"Yes." —Nami answered without hesitation.
Carina raised an eyebrow.
—"For the routes?"
—"For the control."
Pause.
—"Someone who has that… always has more."
Carina smiled.
Now that was interesting.
Caelum watched both of them.
He wasn't convinced.
But he wasn't out either.
—"…if we go, there's no turning back."
Nami looked at him.
Carina too.
—"Are you getting scared?" —she asked.
—"No."
Pause.
—"I'm thinking."
Carina smiled.
—"Then think fast."
Nami folded the map.
—"We're going."
The course shifted.
No announcement.
No dramatics.
Just a decision.
Hours later…
The calm of the sea disappeared.
A makeshift structure blocked the passage between two rock formations.
Wood.
Chains.
A checkpoint.
A ship anchored to the side.
Men.
Watching.
Waiting.
The Vesper's Ion slowed down.
One of the men stepped forward.
—"Controlled passage." —he said— "You pay… or you don't pass."
Nami didn't answer immediately.
She observed.
Counted.
Measured.
—"How much?"
The man smiled.
Not kindly.
—"Depends."
His gaze shifted.
First to Nami.
Then to Carina.
Slower.
More deliberate.
—"Though… there are other ways to settle it."
Silence.
Carina didn't look away.
She smiled faintly.
As if she were evaluating him.
Nami didn't change her expression.
But her hand tightened slightly.
Caelum… frowned.
A small, almost imperceptible spark flickered from his fingers.
No one on the other side noticed.
But Nami did.
And Carina too.
The man continued.
—"A little entertainment… and we let you pass without trouble."
Low laughter spread among the others.
The air grew heavier.
Carina tilted her head.
—"Does that actually work for you?"
The man's smile widened.
—"Enough."
Nami spoke.
—"We're not paying."
Direct.
Cold.
Carina glanced at her.
Interesting.
The man sighed.
—"Then turn around."
Pause.
—"Or we make sure you don't go any further."
Silence.
Caelum took a step forward.
He didn't say anything.
But his presence changed something.
It wasn't strength.
It was… tension.
Nami noticed.
—"No." —she said quietly.
Not to them.
To him.
Caelum didn't move.
But the spark disappeared.
Carina watched everything.
With a faint smile.
—"How boring." —she murmured.
Then, louder:
—"Fine."
She turned around.
—"We're leaving."
The ship slowly changed direction.
The stares followed them.
Heavy.
Uncomfortable.
Until they were far enough away.
Silence returned.
But it wasn't calm.
—"…you could've hit them." —Carina said.
—"No." —Nami replied.
—"We could've."
—"Not without information."
Pause.
Carina smiled.
—"Now you sound like someone who wants something."
Nami didn't answer.
But her eyes returned to the map.
Sharper.
Colder.
Caelum leaned against the railing.
Looking back.
At the checkpoint growing smaller in the distance.
—"…this isn't just about money."
Nami didn't deny it.
Neither did Carina.
The wind picked up.
The sails tightened.
And the ship kept moving forward.
But now…
They weren't avoiding the problem.
They were heading straight into it.
