Cecil hadn't regained consciousness for two whole days. According to all the royal doctors who had examined her, the medicine Kaleb had claimed was an antidote was actually another type of poison that incapacitated both body and mind.
Even after taking the real antidote, my chief inspector lay dead to the world for a while, making me extremely anxious.
But as soon as she barely managed to open her eyes, she blurted out nonsense, "Am I dead?"
"You're alive," I assured her.
"Then is this a dream?"
"If I'm in your dreams, is that a good one or bad one?"
"It depends on how much work Your Majesty gives me."
Seeing her wit had returned, I guessed she was out of the woods.
As I chuckled, Cecil gazed at me, then said, "So I did survive. I thought I would die."
"Not yet, Chief. There's plenty to do."
This time, Cecil chuckled too and then forced herself to sit up.
