I stood in the kitchen with my bag packed and resting against my leg, trying to sound casual. "I'm heading back to the city today. Work's piling up, and I can't keep putting everything on hold."
Nadia paused mid-wipe on the counter and gave me a long look. "Again?"
"Yeah. Again." I adjusted the strap on my bag. "I have clients waiting. Deadlines. You know how it is."
Rhys walked in just then, catching the tail end of it. He stopped near the doorway, arms folding across his chest. "You're leaving again. That's what? The third time this week?"
"Something like that." I kept my voice even. "I told you I have a job, Rhys. Janine can only cover for me for so long before things start falling apart."
He studied me, eyes narrowing slightly. "You drive out, come back less than thirty minutes later, and now you're trying it again. You gonna tell me what's actually going on?"
