Chapter 17 - THE RUNNER AND THE SIREN

THE RUNNER AND THE SIREN

The Urban Spirit: Garry

Slum Sector Rooftops – West District

04:30 PM

Garry, a 17-year-old boy with a lean, agile build, landed smoothly atop a rusted water pipe. He was the best freerunner in Ironport. To him, the city wasn't a collection of buildings, but a playground without obstacles. He could deliver small packages anywhere in the city in record time without ever being caught by CCTV cameras or police patrols.

Rion was waiting for him on an old water tank. Garry jumped, nearly losing his balance when he saw a stranger standing calmly there.

"Who are you? This is my turf!" Garry barked, his hands already poised to climb the nearest fence to escape.

"I watched you cross three blocks in four minutes," Rion said without turning. "Your talent is wasted delivering low-grade drugs or inter-gang threat letters."

Garry snorted, trying to look brave. "I need money to eat. And I'm the fastest one here."

"I need a 'courier' who can't be tracked by the system," Rion tossed a sabotaged tracking bracelet toward him. "Someone who can move through the city's cracks when the streets are locked down. Stop working for pennies, Garry. Work for me, and you'll never have to steal food again."

Garry looked at Rion, his young eyes flashing with immense curiosity. He was bored with his monotonous life. "Do I get gear like in the movies?"

"You'll get more than that," Rion replied shortly. "You'll be the nerve that connects my plans."

The Digital Muse: Funin

Backstage of "The Velvet Moon" Nightclub

08:00 PM

On the other side of town, Ren was observing a 16-year-old girl named Funin. The girl looked innocent with large headphones perpetually draped around her neck, but behind that face lived an expert in deepfakes and voice manipulation. Funin could mimic anyone's voice with just a few seconds of audio samples, and she often used her talent to prank city officials or erase her school records.

Ren found Funin busy with her laptop in a quiet corner of the dressing room.

"That Mayor's voice you made yesterday almost caused a panic on the stock exchange," Ren said, making Funin jump and quickly slam her laptop shut.

"I was just joking! Please don't report me!" Funin pleaded, her large eyes filled with fear.

Ren smiled gently and sat beside the girl. "I'm not here to arrest you, sweetie. I'm here because I need the voice of a Police Commissioner to say things he never actually said."

Funin froze. She had never been asked to do something so serious. "You mean... you want me to fake an important person's voice?"

"Not just a voice," Ren stroked Funin's hair. "I want you to be our 'Siren.' Scramble enemy communications, give false orders, and create chaos without ever having to leave this room. You're an artist, Funin. And I have a very large canvas for you."

Funin swallowed hard, her fear slowly replaced by a sense of pride. "I can do it. I can make them sound like they're singing if you want."

### **The Silent Orbit**

That night, at the penthouse, Rion and Ren sat opposite each other at a large dining table filled with the profile data of their new members.

"Garry is in," Rion said. "He'll be our physical communication line if Key is detected or if our digital comms go dark."

"And Funin will be our wild card," Ren added. "With her skills, we can make enemies shoot each other over a single wrong voice command. She's young, but she's incredibly gifted."

Rion nodded, sipping his cold coffee. "Garry, Funin, Key, Lea, Krow, and Zack. They're all very young or cast aside. They have no baggage, and that makes them brave."

"And most importantly," Ren continued, "they don't know each other. They only know one of us. It's the best insurance if anyone gets caught."

The pace was slowly beginning to heat up. All the players were in position. Outside the window, Ironport still appeared peaceful, but behind the scenes, an orchestra of destruction was being rehearsed by two of the most dangerous conductors in the city.
