Just as Wayne leaped down, Hayes returned.
Hayes had successfully hunted a wolf and tossed it at Wayne's feet before retreating to the hollow of the tree.
Wayne paused only briefly before tearing into the meat. The exhaustion from the night's battles had left him ravenous, and clearly, Hayes had been pushed to the same limit to hunt so early.
Once sated, Wayne felt his strength returning. He leaned back against the wood and drifted into a much-needed rest.
Meanwhile, Xie and his trackers reached the site, finding only a mound of cold corpses.
They had finally made it to land.
Xie swished his massive tail through the shallow water, a playful, jagged smile curling his lips. "Go ashore and hunt them down," he commanded.
His guards transformed, their tails receding to reveal long, powerful legs, and they began their search.
Once they departed, Xie followed suit. His shimmering blue fishtail vanished, replaced by two muscular, sturdy legs.
