Chapter 136: Craving Some Chicken Wings
Shirazawa and Shiro exchanged a glance, instantly reading each other's unspoken cues.
"We are from an outside realm," Shirazawa said slowly. "We have zero interest in getting involved in local disputes, and we won't make a move against Earth."
"Oh?" Zeus smiled, though the warmth didn't reach his eyes. "Yet the lingering aura of the Underworld clings heavily to your frames. Those words don't carry much weight, do they?"
Shiro's delicate brows knit together slightly. She thoroughly disliked this guy's aggressive, overbearing posture.
The tier of a Primary Deity belonged to the Upper Gods, and since Zeus claimed to be a Divine King sitting right beneath them, it meant his personal rank was safely at the Middle God level. Meanwhile, she and Shirazawa were just newly ascended Lower Gods, leaving a pretty significant gap between their respective tiers.
But that didn't mean they were completely helpless.
If it genuinely came down to a war, neither of them harbored a single shred of fear. Among the massive inheritance D had left for Shiro, there were plenty of high-tier artifacts capable of threatening a Middle God. They weren't entirely devoid of a winning chance.
Zeus, however, remained completely oblivious to these hidden details. Convinced that he had thoroughly backed the couple into a corner, his words became even more reckless.
"When an unknown deity steps into the domain of another god, it can only carry two possible meanings."
"An act of war, or a declaration of allegiance."
"Since you claim you don't want a war, does that imply you are ready to submit beneath my absolute rule?"
Hearing this, Shirazawa couldn't resist curling his lips into a cold, mocking sneer. "You? Are you even worthy?"
Zeus's gaze turned instantly sharp and menacing. "Arrogant! A mere Lower God dares to look down on me? Do you have any idea that if I personally make a move, you won't stand a single chance of escaping?!"
"Tch~ what a pain!"
Shirazawa really hadn't expected that even after D had slipped away, she would still end up leaving such a massive pit for them to fall into. She was a Supreme Deity; she could go wherever she pleased, and absolutely no one could trace her movements.
But they were entirely different. They had just barely stepped into the realm of gods. The moment their presence was exposed, it would instantly paint a massive target on their backs, drawing relentless hunters. The war for divine cores between gods was infinitely more savage than the petty conflicts of the mortal world.
The primary reason they hadn't left the alternate world sooner was because that entire realm was under D's personal lockdown, meaning other deities couldn't cross the threshold. It had allowed them to quietly focus on their cultivation in absolute safety.
They had subconsciously assumed that a place like Earth was safely within D's private backyard, which was why they had confidently arrived without taking any extra precautions to hide their traces. As it turned out, D had deliberately run off to a distant, hostile territory just to throw off the tracking of the Underworld.
Piecing the puzzle together, Shirazawa could only let out a silent, bitter laugh. He lifted his gaze to look at Zeus, suddenly asking, "Have you ever heard the name D?"
Zeus was visibly startled. "D? Who on earth is that?"
Seeing that the man didn't look like he was lying, Shirazawa confirmed a few more things in his mind. To avoid exposing herself, D had thoroughly buried her true name, using 'D' as nothing more than a casual code name. That meant his previous theories about some evil gods like C, B, or A were completely nonexistent.
"Roughly a year ago, a massive spatial distortion rippled through this world. Were you aware of that?" Shirazawa calmly shifted the topic.
Zeus shook his head. "Never heard of it."
"How do you literally know absolutely nothing? And you call yourself the supreme Overseer of Earth? Utterly useless!"
A year ago on Earth was the exact timeline when their classroom had been obliterated. It looked like D had completely scrubbed that entire incident from the local sensory radar. Seeing that this guy was completely clueless no matter what he asked, Shirazawa lost all desire to continue the conversation. It was time to pull a runner.
Zeus's face turned terrifyingly dark, his teeth grinding together as he spat out, "Kid, watch your tone!"
Shirazawa let out a cold snort, completely ignoring him. He turned his focus to Shiro. "Let's go, Shiro."
Shiro gave a soft nod, pushing herself up from her seat, fully prepared to leave.
"You think you can just walk away?" Furious, Zeus brought his palm down, smashing the wooden dining table into absolute splinters as he stood up. "In your dreams!"
The moment the words left his mouth, a colossal army of angels materialized out of thin air, completely blanketing the sky right outside the house. The sheer volume of their numbers was enough to leave anyone stunned. Leading the vanguard were three twelve-winged Seraphs, hovering mid-air as they stared down coldly at the pair below. A milky-white magical array rapidly spread out, completely locking down the surrounding space to ensure the couple couldn't slip away even if they grew wings.
"Whoa! Talk about an over-the-top welcome party."
Shirazawa rolled his eyes. This guy was supposed to be a Middle God, yet he still felt the need to bring along a massive swarm of underlings just to back him up. This type of behavior was usually reserved for the pampered young masters of massive mortal factions; it looked like this guy's administrative background was indeed quite deep. Furthermore, deploying three Lower Gods right off the bat was an absolute flex of sheer resources.
Shiro tilted her head to look at Shirazawa, an inquisitive question lingering in her eyes. Shirazawa tossed his hands up, offering an innocent shrug.
What else could they even do? They'd have to fight it out first. It had been quite a while since they ran into a decent opponent anyway; it was the perfect opportunity to stretch their limbs.
"The heavens descend upon you today! As long as you two are willing to become my personal subordinates, I can graciously grant you your lives!" Zeus's features were entirely consumed by pure arrogance. He locked his arms across his chest, delivering his ultimate judgment from a lofty high-and-mighty position.
The couple looked at each other, both silently arriving at the conclusion that this guy's brain was safely missing a few vital gears. Could this absolute fool seriously not sense that their soul corridors were tightly linked to another supreme deity? Simply put, they were already the personal kin of another god, not some rogue, independent entities drifting aimlessly through the cosmos.
Shirazawa let out a soft chuckle, lazily stretching his arms as he directed a casual glance toward Zeus. "I'd highly advise you to stop wasting your breath. Let's just skip straight to the fight."
"Hmph! Stubborn fools!" Thoroughly enraged, Zeus barked a command, gesturing for the vanguard of angels to charge down.
Shiro and Shirazawa instantly drew their respective weapons, their comfortable pajamas instantly shifting into their sleek combat attire. To ensure this cozy little house wouldn't be reduced to absolute collateral damage, the pair executed a synchronized flash, rocketing straight out toward the depths of space.
"After them! Hunt the male down and rip out his divine core, but bring the female back to me alive!"
Following Zeus's absolute command, the massive army of hundreds of thousands of angels spread their wings, swarming right behind them. They cut through the vacuum of space, various beams of destructive light intersecting and clashing across the dark void. Countless entities were obliterated with every passing second; anything that dared to obstruct their path was thoroughly erased from existence!
Zeus followed leisurely at the rear, looking exactly like a cat idly playing with a pair of mice. He had already begun fantasizing about some deeply unhinged scenarios, a thoroughly sleazy grin creeping onto his features.
His father had always told him that a free lunch never falls from the heavens. But he had never believed it. Today was living proof that it did. Not only could he secure a high-grade divine core to help him break through to the Upper God tier, but he could also bring a rare beauty back to his chambers.
He had long since grown completely tired of ordinary mortal women; their fragile bodies couldn't withstand the raw intensity of a Middle God's power, always leaving a bloody, messy disaster after every single session. But if it were a fellow goddess... the experience was bound to be absolutely exquisite.
Visualizing Shiro's beautiful frame trembling while tears streamed down her face, Zeus's mood grew increasingly delighted, his laughter becoming thoroughly unhinged.
Yet, as the seconds ticked by, the manic laughter on Zeus's face abruptly died on his lips.
"How... can this be...?"
Accompanied by Shirazawa's casual deployment of the "Antimagic Field," countless oncoming angels instantly lost their magical affinities. Devoid of their primary output, they were cleanly sliced into absolute mincemeat by an endless, sweeping wave of transparent spider silk.
"Man~ I really have to hand it to him. Potimas was a genuine genius."
"This nullification barrier is honestly entirely too convenient to use." Shirazawa clicked his tongue in heartfelt admiration.
Then again, it was incredibly lucky that the specific branch of the Angel Clan they ran into happened to focus entirely on magical mastery. If they had crossed paths with those old-school physical combat angels, the two of them would have genuinely been forced to turn tail and run for their lives.
"Darling, the vacuum of space makes it impossible to deploy my little spiders to help out. Should we shift the battlefield somewhere else?"
"The food reserves inside our pocket dimension are pretty much wiped out anyway, and the little spiders desperately need a massive haul of survival rations. I feel like the chicken wings on these bird-men should taste pretty decent, so how about we..."
"Uh... are you absolutely sure you aren't just craving chicken wings yourself?"
Shiro silently swallowed her saliva, letting out a cute, defensive grumble. "I... I am absolutely not."
*Right, right.* Since his lovely wife wanted to eat some chicken wings, they might as well harvest a decent batch of ingredients to bring back home.
Once their little strategy meeting wrapped up, the pair immediately altered their trajectory, flying deeper into the universe to search for a solid planet suitable for a proper fight. The remaining angelic army naturally swarmed right behind them like a flock of single-minded birds, absolutely determined to cut down these two unknown deities.
Staring at their retreating figures, Zeus clenched his fists in pure, burning hatred. These two outsiders were pushing his patience entirely too far! How dare they casually refer to his elite celestial vanguard as mere *bird-men*! The moment he dragged them back into his custody, he was going to make absolutely sure they died a slow, agonizing death.
Shortly after the two opposing forces vanished from Earth's orbital range.
A young girl with distinct cat ears, dressed in a traditional maid outfit, materialized out of thin air right inside the living room of the little house.
"Ara-ara~ I finally managed to secure a single day off to come back home, so why does it smell so strongly of bird-men around here...?"
