The room was quieter now.
Too quiet.
After everything that had happened—the alarms, the reset, the version of Kelvin that shouldn't exist—silence felt wrong.
Kelvin stood in front of the chamber.
Still.
Focused.
Like nothing else mattered.
"…Keira," he said softly.
Inside the glass, her fingers twitched again.
Small.
But real.
Kelvin didn't notice anything else.
But Aysha did.
She stood a few steps behind him, watching.
Not the chamber.
Not Keira.
Him.
And something inside her felt… tight.
Uncomfortable.
Like she was standing too close to something she didn't belong in.
Laura glanced between them.
She noticed it too.
But said nothing.
Kelvin leaned slightly closer to the glass.
"I'm not going to force you," he said quietly. "Just… come back at your own pace."
A pause.
Then—
Keira's breathing shifted faintly.
Aysha's fingers curled slightly at her side.
He talks to her so gently…
She looked down.
Then away.
"Kelvin."
He turned slightly.
Aysha walked closer.
Her expression was normal again.
Or at least… she was trying to make it look that way.
"We need to think about what happens next."
Kelvin nodded. "I know."
But his eyes drifted back to Keira almost immediately.
Aysha noticed.
Of course she did.
She forced a small smile. "You're not even listening, are you?"
Kelvin blinked. "I am."
"No, you're not."
A pause.
Then she added lightly:
"You're somewhere else right now."
Kelvin didn't deny it.
That hurt more than if he had.
Laura stepped in. "We don't have much time before the system reacts again."
Kelvin turned. "Then we move her."
Both girls froze.
Aysha spoke first. "Move her? Are you serious?"
Kelvin's voice was steady. "If she stays here, the system controls everything."
Laura shook her head. "It's not that simple."
Kelvin frowned. "Then explain."
Laura gestured to the chamber. "She's not just being held physically. She's connected to the system."
Aysha added, "So if we just pull her out, something could go wrong."
Kelvin's jaw tightened. "Something is already wrong."
Silence.
No one could argue with that.
Aysha crossed her arms, trying to think.
"Okay… then we don't rush it."
Kelvin looked at her.
"We plan it."
Laura nodded slowly. "That's the smarter approach."
Kelvin hesitated.
Then sighed slightly.
"…fine."
Aysha smiled a little. "Wow. You actually listened to me."
Kelvin glanced at her.
"I do listen."
She raised an eyebrow. "Sometimes."
For a brief second—
The tension eased.
Just a little.
Then—
The lights flickered again.
All three froze.
Laura turned sharply to the console. "No… not again."
Kelvin's voice dropped. "What is it?"
Laura's fingers moved quickly across the panel.
"The system is adjusting."
Aysha frowned. "Adjusting how?"
Laura's expression darkened.
"It's adapting to you."
Kelvin's eyes narrowed. "What does that mean?"
Laura looked at him.
"It means next time… it won't react the same way."
A pause.
Then she added:
"It's learning."
A chill ran through the room.
Aysha stepped closer to Kelvin without thinking.
"This place just keeps getting worse."
Kelvin didn't respond.
But he didn't move away either.
Inside the chamber—
Keira's eyes fluttered again.
Longer this time.
Stronger.
Kelvin stepped forward immediately.
"Aysha," Laura warned.
But it was too late.
Kelvin was already there.
His hand pressed against the glass again.
"Keira."
Her eyes opened slightly.
Not fully.
But enough.
Enough to see him.
Kelvin's breath caught.
"She's awake…"
Aysha watched from behind.
Her chest tightened again.
Not because Keira was waking up.
But because of the way Kelvin looked at her.
Like nothing else existed.
Aysha looked down.
Her voice came out quieter than before.
"…Kelvin."
He didn't hear her.
Or maybe he did—
and just didn't respond.
That was worse.
Keira's lips moved faintly.
No sound.
But effort.
Kelvin leaned closer.
"You don't have to speak… just stay with me."
Aysha's fingers clenched slightly.
Then slowly—
She turned away.
Just a little.
Not leaving.
Just… stepping back.
Laura noticed.
She walked closer to Aysha quietly.
"You okay?"
Aysha forced a small smile.
"Yeah."
Laura didn't look convinced.
"You don't have to pretend."
Aysha exhaled softly.
"…I'm not."
A pause.
Then she whispered:
"I just didn't expect it to feel like this."
Laura glanced at Kelvin.
Then back at Aysha.
"It's not easy… being the one standing outside the connection."
Aysha's eyes lowered.
"…Yeah."
Kelvin didn't hear any of it.
Because in that moment—
Keira's eyes opened a little wider.
And for the first time since the reset—
They focused clearly.
On him.
Kelvin's voice softened.
"I'm still here."
Her gaze didn't move.
Didn't break.
Didn't disappear.
And something about that moment—
Felt like the beginning of something dangerous.
Behind him—
Aysha stood quietly.
Watching.
Understanding something she didn't want to accept yet:
This wasn't just about saving someone.
This was something deeper.
Something that might take Kelvin away from her…
before she even had the chance to reach him.
