Chapter 3 - Chapter 3 — A Man of Intellect

The three guards at the other end of the room rushed to stand protectively in front of us.

"We weren't given any Intel about another gift user besides this guy." One of the intruders said, pointing at Steve as he strode forward, standing beside the huge man.

"Ahh… it would have been easier if we'd been able to kill these guards first…" a woman shrieked, "thanks to this asshole getting in our way."

"I see…. Plan a, was to have this guy." I began, pointing at the ground user.

"Sneak in and take the girl without much of a fight. Plan b, was for the four of you to take out the four guards instantly using his gift."

"Someone seems very intelligent." Another intruder said, walking towards the ground user.

He placed his palms on his shoulder, healing him instantly.

I tsked in annoyance, healing gifts were always a pain in the ass.

If they weren't on my side actually.

"Your second attack had us backed into a corner, and we were only able to take out one guard…" he cocked his head to the side. "Or you did rather."

"You talk too much Miguel." The huge man said.

"That's because I like to indulge in intelligent people, not people like you." He bit back.

"You bastard—"

"Come on guys…"

Steve glanced at me from the corner of his eyes.

"In as much as I don't trust a non-gifted user…" he began taking advantage of the intruders squabbling.

"I have to trust this mission into your hands… Stone made a good call bringing you instead, I guess the perks of you being a non-gifted user is your heightened intellect and that is just what she needs."

He moved closer to the three remaining guards.

"Can I ask you to protect Rosalie with your life."

It's literally what I'm being paid to do asshole.

I grunted in response.

"The window behind you is made of bubbles, I used my gift to make it seem like a window. You take Rosalie and get out of here, the rest of us will try to hold them here."

"What about the thing Mr Demarco created?"

"I'll signal him to lower it, once I do. Take that chance to escape. Got it?"

I nodded.

He pinned his gaze on the group.

Then—

A huge metal barricade appeared in front of us.

Momentarily blocking us from the intruders.

"Now." He screamed.

Just as Owen lowered his barrier.

I grabbed the girl and jumped out of the window.

She screamed.

I looked back just in time to see them tearing through the barricade.

As we landed.

I used my body to cushion the floor.

Then I stood up, lifting her.

"Run." I ordered.

She didn't question me.

She just did.

I could hear the echo of gunshots and metal clashing against each other from a distance.

Shit.

We still needed to put more—

A dagger came launching my way, I moved quickly, using my metal hand to shield my temple.

My eyes widened as the dagger glinted a bright orange.

I opted to push it away instead of blocking it, but the damage was done already.

Someone had smothered the dagger in fire before sending it my way and I sadly didn't notice it till it came in contact with my metal hand, thereby burning through it.

Luckily for me, it didn't reach my arm.

The girl shifted close to me just as one of the intruders from before walked towards us.

He was the one who used the guard as a shield.

"The girl." He demanded.

I scoffed, taking my stance.

"Then come get her."

He moved.

So did I.

My eyes scanned his form.

What move will he make first?

My gaze snapped to his hand.

Fist.

I slipped under his arm, aiming to stab him.

But he was quick to react, his other hand shot out to grab me.

I immediately put distance between us, then dove in again.

He created a huge shield around his body while also sending daggers my way.

Fuck.

He had the same gift as Steve?

I deftly dodged every single one of them.

Wincing at a slight cut to my side.

Then I grabbed one dagger, sending it back to him.

His eyes widened in surprise, but he was quick to make the dagger disappear just before it hit him.

His gaze snapped back to me…

Or rather the girl.

"Up here," I called, enthusiastically.

He looked up, eyes widening in surprise as my knife came down—

His body was taken into the ground.

Tsk.

It was that ground user again.

I stepped back quickly, moving to position myself behind the girl.

Eyes scanning the ground.

His gift was going to be a pain in the ass.

"Umm… aren't you supposed to be in front of me?" She asked.

"Not really… As you can see, his gift has something to do with the ground. I need to be alert just in case he tries to grab you."

She nodded in understanding.

I squinted my eyes…

Waiting.

In this situation what would they do?

If I was the ground user, I'd know my enemy would be quick to stab me just like before if he came from the beneath.

But what if—

I grinned, bolting forward at high speed.

Just as expected the dagger guy was pushed up from beneath.

I made a show of going in for him, but in reality—

I threw my sword at him, grinning as he forged a shield around himself.

Those few seconds… were all I needed.

I pulled back, rushing towards the girl.

And as expected the ground user appeared underneath her.

Her arms flailed as she struggled to hold herself from sinking.

I pulled her out forcefully.

Unclipped a grenade and threw it into the ground.

The grenade sinked in immediately and soon enough a huge blast followed.

The guy's body materialized.

Putting a stop to his ability.

He screamed in agony, hands desperately trying to clutch his side.

Sadly…

One part of his body, from his shoulder down to his waist had been blasted away.

I scoffed.

Let's see your healer heal this one.

"Mickey," the dagger guy screamed, rushing for him.

That was my moment.

I moved.

Before he could fully comprehend the situation.

His head rolled to the ground.

Stopping just at Rosalie's feet.

My gaze snapped back to her, she looked horrified.

Hands shaking beside her as she stared at the head.

I grabbed her hand, pulling her away from the scene.

"Let's go."
