Rain fell softly over the city, turning the neon lights into blurred streaks of red, blue, and violet. The streets of Tokyo breathed like a living thing—cars rushing past, footsteps echoing, voices blending into a distant hum. But for Kuroshin Rei, the world had always been… quieter.
Too quiet.
He stood under the flickering glow of a broken streetlamp, his black hair damp from the rain, his expression unreadable. People passed by him without a glance, as if he didn't exist. That was how he preferred it.
Invisible.
Silent.
Safe.
Rei adjusted the strap of his bag and continued walking toward his new apartment. Transfer student. New city. New life. That was the plan.
"No trouble," he muttered under his breath.
But plans had a way of breaking.
As he crossed an empty alley, something felt… wrong.
The air grew colder.
The sound of rain faded.
And for a moment—just a moment—the world stopped breathing.
Rei froze.
"…Again," he whispered.
At the far end of the alley, something moved.
At first, it looked like a shadow stretched too far across the wall. But shadows don't move on their own.
This one did.
It twisted unnaturally, peeling itself away from the concrete like liquid darkness. Two faint, glowing eyes opened within it—watching him.
Not passing him.
Watching him.
Rei didn't run.
He never did.
"…You can see me," the shadow whispered, its voice like wind scraping against glass.
Rei's fingers tightened slightly.
"Yeah," he replied quietly. "I can."
Silence.
Then the shadow trembled.
"…Interesting."
In an instant, it lunged.
The darkness shot forward like a blade, aiming straight for his chest.
But just before it could strike—
Rei moved.
Not fast. Not flashy.
Just… precise.
His hand lifted slightly, and the shadow beneath his feet rippled.
For a split second, the alley seemed to sink into darkness.
Then—
The attacking shadow stopped.
Frozen.
As if something invisible had grabbed it.
The creature let out a distorted screech, its form flickering violently.
"What… are you?" it hissed.
Rei's eyes reflected the faint glow of the neon light behind him.
"Nothing," he said.
And then—
The shadow beneath him rose.
Like a living thing.
It wrapped around the creature, pulling it down, swallowing it whole. The alley returned to normal in an instant—the cold gone, the silence broken by rain once more.
Nothing remained.
Rei stood there for a moment, his hand slowly lowering.
"…I told myself," he murmured, "no trouble."
A soft clap echoed behind him.
"Well, that didn't look like 'no trouble' to me."
Rei turned.
Standing at the entrance of the alley was a girl holding a black umbrella. Her long hair shimmered under the city lights, and her sharp eyes were locked onto him—not with fear, but excitement.
Aika Hoshino.
Though Rei didn't know her name yet.
"You saw it," she said, stepping closer. "And you didn't panic."
Rei stayed silent.
Her smile widened slightly.
"More importantly…" she continued, tilting her head, "…you controlled it."
Rei's gaze hardened just a little.
"…You should leave," he said. "This doesn't concern you."
The girl laughed softly.
"Oh, it definitely does."
She lowered her umbrella slightly, revealing a small paper charm tied around her wrist, glowing faintly.
"I've been looking for someone like you."
Rain continued to fall between them, but the space felt charged—like the moment before lightning strikes.
Rei frowned.
"…Why?"
Her answer came without hesitation.
"Because," she said, her eyes gleaming,
"you're not normal."
A pause.
Then—
"Neither am I."
For the first time since arriving in this city, something inside Rei shifted.
Not fear.
Not curiosity.
Something deeper.
Because deep down…
He already knew.
This city wasn't normal.
And whatever had just begun in that alley—
Was only the start.
The shadows had found him again.
And this time…
They weren't letting go.
