Chapter 12 - Chapter 12 — Reset Annihilation

"Erase everything. Reset to zero."

The voice rolled out from a bottomless abyss, carrying the metallic scent of rust and death.

Before the words even settled—

the world did not collapse.

It dissolved.

Like acid poured over a canvas. The solid ground liquefied and sank; the air twisted into thick, viscous black mist. Even light could not withstand the force—it was devoured instantly.

All meaning began to peel away.

Even time itself lost continuity.

Lin Wan stood still.

She couldn't move.

Because her existence was being forcibly carved out of reality.

Her fingers lost shape first, turning into wisps of pale smoke before vanishing completely. Her sense of existence drained at an alarming speed—pain, temperature, even her heartbeat were being formatted out of her life.

Yet paradoxically—

her consciousness had never been clearer.

Clear enough to see the truth—

That crimson eye did not exist within this three-dimensional space.

It hovered in a higher dimension of darkness, observing everything like a god reviewing flawed code.

Cold. Absolute. Disdainful.

It wasn't hunting.

It was editing.

Cutting away the unwanted fragment of this "experiment"—

her.

"You finally see it."

A voice older than the eye, closer to source code, echoed in her mind with mechanical precision.

Lin Wan didn't respond. She understood.

"It does not belong here," the voice continued.

"It is merely a filter. When a variable goes out of control, it executes a reset."

Variable.

Everything snapped into place—shadows, the fire, the seven victims, the vessel, the deviation she created—

This was never a hunt.

This was a selection experiment.

And she—

was the only broken variable.

"You were insignificant," the voice declared coldly.

"But you did something forbidden."

Her gaze dropped—

to the severed fragment of her shadow.

"You broke the rules."

"The rules cannot define you."

"So you must be deleted."

Darkness crashed down—not devouring, but erasing.

Her name faded from memory. Her past unraveled like soaked paper. She began to forget why she existed at all.

"Target nearing deletion."

The crimson eye spoke again, mechanical and emotionless.

"Reset—"

"Click."

A tiny sound.

Not from the eye.

Not from the void.

From Zhang.

In the collapsing vacuum of logic—

his finger twitched.

Slow. Weak.

But alive.

"Anomaly detected."

For the first time, the eye faltered.

"Target not fully synchronized."

Lin Wan seized that flaw instantly.

Zhang's shadow had been severed—but not fully replaced.

When she cut her own shadow, she unknowingly disrupted his connection.

He no longer fully belonged to the system.

He still had a fragment of humanity.

A chance.

Without hesitation—

she made a decision.

She let go of herself.

Her consciousness shattered into countless fragments of light—

and surged toward that remaining piece of Zhang.

"If I'm going to be erased—"

"Then I won't exist as 'me' anymore."

She embedded herself into his remaining humanity.

System error.

Corruption.

"Target identification failed."

"Variable split."

"Unable to lock."

For the first time—

the crimson eye lost focus.

Darkness froze.

The burned man collapsed into a howling mass of shadow.

"You broke the system—you're a BUG!"

The world flickered—

once.

twice.

three times—

Then—

pure white.

Everything vanished.

Only one figure remained.

Zhang.

Unconscious.

Barely breathing.

And beneath him—

two overlapping shadows.

One belonged to him.

The other—

was breathing.

Then—

it opened its eyes.
