Chapter 16 - Don’t Break What I’m Becoming

The room had gone still in a way that felt unnatural.

Even the air seemed to wait for permission to move.

Shen Yichen was still holding Lin Yue's hand.

But now it felt less like attachment…

and more like structure.

Like if he let go, something inside him might collapse.

Lu Han's expression had darkened.

"You're not healing," he said quietly.

"You're replacing your identity with her."

Shen Yichen didn't look at him.

"I'm rebuilding it," he corrected.

A pause.

"And she's the only thing that fits."

Lin Yue studied him carefully.

"You're saying I define you now?" she asked softly.

Shen Yichen finally looked at her.

No hesitation.

"Yes."

That one word landed heavier than anything before it.

Not romantic.

Not emotional.

Final.

Lin Yue exhaled slowly.

"That's not sustainable," she said.

Shen Yichen didn't argue.

"I know."

A pause.

"But it's stable."

Lu Han stepped forward sharply.

"That's not stability—that's dependency."

Shen Yichen turned his head slightly.

Slow.

Cold.

"I don't care what label you use."

A beat.

"I care that I can breathe when she's here."

Silence.

Lin Yue felt it then—clearly.

This wasn't just emotional attachment anymore.

It was physiological.

Like her presence had become something his mind treated as essential input.

She looked at him more carefully now.

"What happens when I'm not here?" she asked quietly.

Shen Yichen didn't answer immediately.

That pause said enough.

Then softly:

"I don't think properly."

A pause.

"I don't sleep properly."

Another pause.

"And I don't feel like myself."

Lu Han's voice sharpened.

"That's exactly the problem."

Shen Yichen finally looked at him fully.

"And when I forgot her?" he asked.

Silence.

He didn't wait for an answer.

"I didn't feel anything at all."

That comparison changed the atmosphere again.

Because now he had a reference point.

And he had chosen this version of himself consciously.

Shen Yichen turned back to Lin Yue.

Their hands still connected.

His grip didn't tighten—but it didn't loosen either.

"I don't want to go back to being empty," he said quietly.

Lin Yue frowned slightly.

"You think I fill that emptiness?"

Shen Yichen nodded once.

"Yes."

Simple.

Absolute.

Then, softer:

"And I don't want to lose that."

Silence.

Lin Yue studied him for a long moment.

"You're building your entire self around one person," she said quietly.

Shen Yichen didn't deny it.

"I know."

Lu Han stepped forward again, frustration rising now.

"You're going to suffocate her with that kind of dependence."

Shen Yichen finally looked at him fully.

"If she asks me to stop," he said quietly.

A pause.

"I will."

Then he looked at Lin Yue.

And this time—

his voice softened just slightly.

"But I don't think you will."

Silence.

That wasn't confidence.

That was instinct reading her better than she expected.

Lin Yue didn't respond immediately.

Because something about that assumption… wasn't entirely wrong.

Shen Yichen took a small step closer again.

Still holding her hand.

Not forcing.

Just closing distance like it was natural law.

"If I become too much," he said quietly.

"Tell me."

A pause.

"But don't leave."

That last part came softer.

Almost like a fear he couldn't fully control.

And for the first time—

he didn't look like a man chasing memory.

He looked like a man terrified of returning to who he was without her.
