Kat stepped through the portal with Lily on her shoulder, not really thinking anything of it. The portals had proven to be safe a number of times. The closest they got to dangerous was when that one closed before Kat to get to it. Monsters didn't follow you through and Thyme never set any traps around them. They were transport and that idea had been reinforced over quite a number of iterations.
Nobody said only Thyme can set traps.
As soon as Kat and Lily exited the portal, a series of explosions went off. Kat's mind slowed down instantly as she tried to work out what to do next. She had no idea what was really going on, her mind simply reacted. Her first instinct was to throw Lily behind her but she had no idea if that was the correct one.
