Chapter 60 - Chapter 58: A Mother's Worry, and the Newest Rumor About Kakashi

It was 2:00 AM by the time the Uchiha war council concluded. The clan elders and elite fighters departed the meeting hall with renewed purpose and high morale.

Jin, however, did not go straight to his own quarters. He headed toward his parents' room.

He knew they wouldn't be asleep. The psychological trauma of being imprisoned in Danzo's subterranean black site was not something that faded in a few hours.

He knocked softly and entered.

"Jin," Keiko Uchiha gasped. The thirty-year-old kunoichi, looking worn but otherwise healthy, immediately rushed over and pulled her son into a tight embrace. "We heard everything from the clan members. You've carried such a heavy burden alone."

Tenichi Uchiha, Jin's father and an active Jonin of the clan, stood by the window. His new, transplanted three-tomoe Sharingan eyes were wrapped in protective bandages. He looked at his son with a complex mixture of pride, shock, and profound disbelief.

Tenichi's Internal Monologue: My son was always quiet and solitary. He possessed average talent. To think he survived the Third War and hid an awakened Mangekyo Sharingan all these years... He has achieved a level of power and political influence that commands the respect of the entire clan, even Patriarch Fugaku. I do not fully recognize the man standing before me.

Jin gently returned his mother's embrace before stepping back, his usual stoic expression softening slightly.

"I am uninjured," Jin assured them. His voice grew slightly strained as he addressed the necessary cruelty of his strategy. "I understand if you harbor resentment. I delayed your rescue intentionally to secure the clan's political position and draw Danzo into a trap. I treated you as bait."

Tenichi shook his head firmly, stepping forward to place a hand on Jin's shoulder.

"Do not apologize for strategic necessity," Tenichi said, his voice steady. "If you had acted rashly, we would all be dead or branded as rogue ninja. You prioritized long-term survival over short-term emotion. You played the board flawlessly. We are proud of you, Jin."

Keiko nodded in agreement, wiping her eyes. "Your father is right. We never understood why you isolated yourself as a child. Now we see you were simply planning for the future. You always saw further than we did."

She paused, offering a small, teasing smile. "However, since you're now a high-ranking Elder and the clan is secure... perhaps it's time you focus a little on your personal life? Find a nice kunoichi. Your father and I would like to hold a grandchild before we get much older."

Jin froze.

The cold, calculating strategist who had just massacred an Anbu Battalion and checkmated the Hokage was entirely unprepared for parental pressure regarding marriage.

Jin's Internal Monologue: A romantic attachment at this stage of the political conflict is a critical vulnerability. The Hokage would absolutely exploit a partner. It is a completely irrational priority.

"I... it is late," Jin deflected quickly, clearing his throat. "You both need to rest and recover. We will discuss this at another time."

He practically fled the room.

The Anbu's Daily Grind

The next morning, the village awoke to a tense, unspoken atmosphere.

Kakashi Hatake, wearing his porcelain hound mask, stood silently at the designated rendezvous point for the Anbu Fifth Battalion. His two squad mates arrived looking exhausted and miserable.

The Fifth Battalion had not been mobilized for the ambush in the Forest of Death. They had spent the previous day, like every day recently, bogged down in menial civilian disputes because the Uchiha Military Police Force was still on strike.

Kakashi, however, had felt the massive chakra fluctuations from the forest last night. He knew a major clash had occurred between Danzo and the Uchiha. But he had chosen not to investigate.

Kakashi's Internal Monologue: The Hokage and Danzo drove my father, Sakumo Hatake (The White Fang), to suicide through orchestrated village slander. I know the truth now. But I also know that if I rebel, or if the Uchiha launch a coup, Konoha will tear itself apart from the inside. I will not be the catalyst for a civil war. I will simply do my job and ignore the politics.

"Kakashi," Tenzo (code-named Yamato) groaned, slumping his shoulders. "I can't take another day of arbitrating disputes over stolen cabbages and noisy dogs. I want to resign from the Anbu. Even Root wasn't this soul-crushing."

Kakashi gave a tired sigh. "Tenzo, if the Hokage accepted resignations right now, the entire Anbu force would quit, and the village infrastructure would completely collapse. The Second Hokage created the Military Police Force specifically to isolate the Uchiha while letting them handle the village's civilian complaints. Now that the Uchiha refuse to play their part, the Anbu are paying the price. Endure it."

As the three Anbu walked toward the administration building to receive their daily assignments, they passed a crowded marketplace. A group of civilians was gossiping loudly.

"Did you hear the new rumor about Kakashi Hatake?" a merchant whispered conspiratorially.

Kakashi stopped. His squad mates tensed, glaring at the civilians.

"Kakashi, ignore them," Tenzo warned softly. "Don't listen."

"I need to know what narrative the village is spinning now," Kakashi replied flatly, his visible eye devoid of emotion.

The merchant continued, unaware of the Anbu listening nearby.

"They say Kakashi visited the White Fang's grave a few days ago after learning some secret truth. He supposedly knelt before the tombstone and said, 'Father, I am too weak, and your enemies in the village are too powerful. I have no face to see you in the afterlife without avenging you.'"

The crowd gasped. "Then what?"

"Then," the merchant sneered, "Kakashi drew his father's white chakra blade, sliced off a piece of his own sleeve, and threw it on the grave. He said, 'Therefore, I formally sever our father-son relationship. Please find someone else to avenge your murder. Goodbye.'"
