Chapter 2 - A Baffling Matter

In that moment, Vera Warner's heart suddenly ached, as if something mysterious was pulling at her. She couldn't help but take two steps forward.

"Mind your own business!" The burly, vicious kidnapper's face changed, muttered a curse under his breath, and glared fiercely at Vera.

Vera let out a silent sigh.

She didn't want to meddle either, but come on—she was kind, she was a mom, and she was loaded with motherly love.

The kidnapper turned away, cursing as he headed to the van, but in the next second, his eyes popped wide open and he froze on the spot.

"Whack!"

Suddenly, the kidnapper stiffened and collapsed straight to the ground.

Vera held her Chloe Warner-brand anti-wolf device, giving the man in the car an utterly innocent smile.

"Damn it! Are you begging for death?" The man inside the car yanked the door open and lunged out.

Vera gripped the anti-wolf device, stepped back just a bit, and then landed a flying kick that sent the man staggering back two steps.

Quick as a flash, she pressed the anti-wolf device, spraying mist right into the man's eyes.

Next second, he was writhing on the ground, clutching his head in agony.

"Mom, you're awesome!" In her earpiece, Luke cheered gleefully.

Vera didn't even have time to answer when suddenly a little bundle rolled off the van.

"Hey, are you okay?"

The little bundle was wrapped up like a rice dumpling, still in hospital clothes, face blazing red—clearly sick.

Hearing Vera's voice, the little bundle struggled to lift its head. With fever-bright, sparkling eyes full of adoration and longing, it stared up at her—so cute it made your heart melt.

"Mommy…" The little bundle called out pitifully, then promptly fainted.

Vera peeked around at the empty surroundings, really not wanting to get involved in this mess.

But…

"Oh, fine. You really hit the jackpot bumping into me!"

Resigned, Vera rubbed her forehead, scooped up the little bundle, and hopped back in the car, speeding off.

Two minutes later, a row of black luxury cars encircled the van.

The bodyguards swiftly grabbed the two kidnappers off the ground, searched around in formation, and finally had no choice but to report apprehensively to the person inside the car.

"M-Mr. Morgan—we couldn't find the little master…"

The mood inside the car instantly dropped to freezing. The man's expression was icy and sharp as ink, a flash of deadly anger in his eyes: "Keep searching! Turn the city upside down if you have to—I want him found!"

Aethelgard Central Hospital. Vera stood by the bedside, locked in a stare-down with the little bundle who clung stubbornly to her clothes.

She regretted it!

She already knew who the little bundle was—the Morgan family's crown prince, Zola Morgan, of the number one family in Aethelgard.

This was a premium gold-plated identity!

Rumor had it that the Morgan elder doted on this little prince beyond all reason. If he wanted the moon, he got it—stars optional. Held in his mouth, afraid he'd dissolve.

And earlier that morning, the little prince had been kidnapped right from the hospital!

The Morgan family almost turned the entire city upside down looking for him.

Who'd have guessed the little prince was now right here in her hands? This was the kind of disaster you couldn't explain away if you grew ten extra mouths.

Plus…

If she remembered right, Luke had once used a company for hacking practice and totally crashed their security systems for a whole day…

Wasn't that unlucky company the Morgan Group?

Vera silently cursed her luck. So as soon as the little prince woke up, she planned to slip away. But right then, he clung to her clothes and refused to let go!

"Mommy, don't leave me…" The little bundle gazed at her pitifully, his voice trembling and heart-rending.

Vera twitched the corner of her lips and poked the little prince's forehead: "Hey, little guy, this is our first meeting. Don't call me Mom, okay?"

The bundle blinked his clear eyes and broke into a lopsided, adorable smile on his perfect little face: "No, you ARE my mommy!"

Vera: "..."

Did this kid hit his head?

While the pair faced off, the door to the hospital room suddenly opened.

A crowd of bodyguards in black poured in, and last was a figure radiating chilling coldness.

Vera had just recognized his face, when Luke blared in her earpiece: "Wow! Mom, that guy is so handsome! I want him to be my dad!"

Vera: "..."

This man was an emperor-level figure—just one stomp and all of Aethelgard would tremble. Every inch of him screamed danger and 'approach at your own risk'!

Her daughter really did have good taste!

But she didn't seem worried her mom would end up sleeping with the fishes!

"What's going on?"

The man strode to the bed, his deep voice as rich as a cello, carrying a frost that made your spine freeze.

The little bundle's face had long shed its soft cute look, now tense and cold just like his dad. He pointed at Vera, acting cool: "I want her to be my mommy!"

Victor Morgan's razor-sharp gaze stabbed right at the woman standing nearby.

Vera inwardly rolled her eyes and gave a sarcastic laugh: "Don't get it twisted. Your kid's probably starved for motherly love. I just saved him, and he's been stuck to me calling 'Mom' ever since."

Saying that, she turned to leave.

But her clothes were grabbed again, locked tight.

She turned around and the little bundle gave her an adorable, pleading look: "Don't go—I like you. Stay and be my mommy, okay? My daddy is super rich."

Victor Morgan raised his eyebrow, surprised—as if seeing his son for the first time.

The kid was always aloof, cold like his dad, never close to anyone. Usually, he didn't even acknowledge his own mother, and now he's clinging to a total stranger, begging for pity?

Vera didn't dare yank her clothes, so she spread her hands helplessly at Victor: "President Morgan, can you please ask your son to let go?"

Victor Morgan squinted, his tone dripping with danger: "You know who I am?"

Hearing the suspicion in his voice, Vera was instantly annoyed. The kid was difficult, but the grownup was unreasonable. Was rescuing him a mistake?

She couldn't help a sarcastic smile, mocking with a hint of venom: "Who doesn't know President Morgan's name? Your photo's on the cover of financial magazines every year! Honestly, if I'd known he was your son, I probably wouldn't have gotten involved. I mean, you're so all-powerful—what're two kidnappers to you?"
