I pushed open the door and stepped into the darkness, the green tendrils of the vines reaching out like grasping claws. The rescue mission had begun. And I was ready to face whatever horrors lay ahead, as long as it meant finding Alayna.
The service entrance was a narrow corridor, choked with vines that pulsed with a sickly green light. The air was thick with the smell of damp earth and decay, and the silence was broken only by the rustling of the leaves and the occasional drip of moisture.
I raised my weapon, scanning the darkness. "Breacher, take point," I ordered. "Riflemen, cover the flanks. Let's move."
The squad moved forward, their movements cautious and deliberate. The breacher, a hulking figure with a shotgun, took the lead, his eyes scanning the corridor for any sign of danger. The riflemen flanked him, their weapons raised, ready to engage any threat.
