Chapter 42 - Dragon Form 2

Albion did as he was told.

He stopped thinking about what his Dragon Form was supposed to look like.

He stopped trying to force it.

He simply let the Dragon inside him come out.

A bright light surrounded his body.

King Albion and Focalors watched carefully.

The light grew brighter.

Albion could feel something changing.

His skin became tougher.

His senses sharpened.

Something grew from his back.

His fingers tightened as sharp claws formed at the tips.

Then the light slowly faded.

Silence.

Albion stood in the middle of the training ground.

He looked mostly human.

Mostly.

Scales were now visible across his arms, neck, and parts of his face.

The whites of his eyes had turned black, while his pupils remained bright.

His wings were larger than before.

Not fully grown, but clearly stronger.

A long Dragon tail moved behind him.

Two horns curved from his head.

His fingers ended in sharp claws.

Albion slowly looked at himself.

"Whoa."

He moved one hand.

The claws followed his movements perfectly.

He spread his wings.

They moved with him.

Albion grinned.

"I did it!"

King Albion studied him carefully.

"Interesting."

Albion looked at his father.

"What?"

"You achieved the Hybrid Form."

Albion blinked.

"Hybrid?"

Focalors smiled.

"Yes."

She walked closer and gently touched one of the scales on his arm.

"Dragons have three forms."

She held up one finger.

"First is our Dragon Form."

Albion nodded.

"That's our true form."

She held up a second finger.

"Second is our Hybrid Form."

She pointed toward Albion.

"A mixture of our Human Form and Dragon Form."

Albion looked at his claws.

"That's this?"

"Yes."

She held up a third finger.

"And finally, there is our Human Form."

Albion tilted his head.

"That's the form we hatch from?"

Focalors nodded.

"Most of the time."

Albion stared at his hands.

"So Dragon Hatchlings are basically born looking human?"

"Yes."

Albion looked genuinely confused.

"Actually, I have a question."

King Albion raised an eyebrow.

"What is it?"

Albion pointed at himself.

"Why do Dragon Hatchlings come out looking Human?"

He looked between his parents.

"Without the wings and tails, you could mistake them for Human babies."

Focalors laughed softly.

"That is a very good question."

King Albion nodded.

"One that confused many Dragon scholars."

Albion's eyes widened.

"Really?"

"Yes."

King Albion sat down on a nearby stone.

"Dragons do not hatch fully developed."

He gestured toward Albion.

"Your Human Form is the safest form for a newborn Dragon."

Albion listened.

"A Dragon Hatchling has a lot of growing to do. Wings, horns, scales, claws, and a tail all require energy."

Focalors continued.

"If a newborn Dragon hatched in its full Dragon Form, its body would have to support all of that immediately."

Albion looked thoughtful.

"So the Human Form saves energy?"

"Exactly."

King Albion nodded.

"It allows a Dragon Hatchling to grow normally without carrying the physical burden of a full Dragon body."

Albion looked at his wings.

"Then when do the Dragon traits appear?"

"That depends on the Dragon."

Focalors smiled.

"Some develop small scales first."

She pointed toward his horns.

"Some develop horns."

"Some grow their tails early."

King Albion added.

"And some begin showing their wings."

Albion looked at his own wings.

"So mine just took longer?"

"Not exactly."

King Albion shook his head.

"You have always had them."

Albion blinked.

"What?"

King Albion pointed at Albion's chest.

"Your Dragon Form has always been inside you."

He pointed toward his wings.

"Your body simply wasn't ready to manifest it."

Albion looked at his hands again.

"So I've always been a Dragon."

"Yes."

Albion smiled.

"Then why did I look completely Human when I was little?"

Focalors answered.

"Because that is your natural Hatchling Form."

She gently tapped his forehead.

"Think of it like a seed."

Albion listened.

"The seed already contains everything the tree will become."

"But it doesn't look like a tree."

"Exactly."

Albion slowly nodded.

"So I was basically a Dragon seed."

King Albion stared at him.

"That is perhaps the strangest way I've ever heard someone explain Dragon biology."

Albion grinned.

"But I'm right."

King Albion sighed.

"Unfortunately."

Focalors laughed.

Albion suddenly looked at his wings again.

He moved them.

Once.

Twice.

Then he tried flapping.

WHUMP!

A strong gust of wind blasted across the training ground.

Albion's hair flew backward.

Focalors' dress moved in the wind.

King Albion didn't move.

Albion's eyes widened.

"I can control them!"

He flapped again.

WHUMP!

This time, he lifted slightly off the ground.

Albion stared down.

"I'm flying!"

He immediately lost balance.

"Whoa!"

He fell forward.

King Albion caught him by the back of his shirt.

Albion dangled there.

Silence.

Focalors covered her mouth.

Albion looked back at his father.

"...I meant to do that."

King Albion stared at him.

"Of course."

Albion's tail flicked behind him.

"I just need practice."

King Albion set him down.

"Now you understand why we train."

Albion smiled.

"Again."

King Albion nodded.

"Again."

Albion spread his wings.

This time, he focused.

The wings moved.

His tail helped stabilize his body.

His claws dug slightly into the ground.

He felt his balance improve.

Focalors smiled.

"Good."

Albion looked toward his mother.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"Does everyone get a Hybrid Form like this?"

Focalors shook her head.

"No two Dragons have exactly the same Hybrid Form."

Albion's eyes widened.

"Really?"

"Your Dragon Form is unique to you."

King Albion looked at his son.

"And yours already has something unusual."

Albion immediately became curious.

"What?"

King Albion smiled slightly.

"We'll find out."

Albion stared at him.

"Wait."

He pointed at himself.

"You know something?"

King Albion's smile grew.

"Perhaps."

Albion's eyes narrowed.

"Dad."

King Albion turned away.

"Your training isn't finished."

Albion followed him.

"Dad."

"Keep your wings steady."

"Dad."

"Eyes forward."

"WHAT DO YOU KNOW?"

Focalors laughed as she followed them.

"Your father has been waiting for this moment for years."

Albion stopped.

"He has?"

King Albion glanced back.

"Every Dragon King wants to see what kind of Dragon his child will become."

Albion's expression softened.

Then he smiled.

"Okay."

He spread his wings again.

"Let's find out."

Albion looked over his Hybrid Form.

He flexed his fingers.

The claws moved naturally.

His wings twitched behind him.

His tail moved with his thoughts.

He looked at his father.

"So, what can I do?"

King Albion smiled.

"Find out."

Albion grinned.

He suddenly ran.

The ground blurred beneath his feet.

He stopped several meters away.

His eyes widened.

"Whoa."

He looked back.

"I was faster."

King Albion nodded.

"Much faster."

Albion grinned.

He crouched.

Then jumped.

His wings opened.

A powerful flap sent him upward.

He kept climbing.

Higher.

Higher.

Higher.

Soon, he was above the trees.

Albion looked down.

He had never been this high before.

"HAHA!"

He flapped his wings again.

He climbed even higher.

Focalors looked up at him.

"Careful!"

"I'm fine!"

Albion smiled.

He suddenly tilted forward.

His wings spread wide.

He glided through the air.

Then he began diving.

"THIS IS AWESOME!"

He pulled up at the last second.

A strong gust blasted across the training ground.

Albion landed safely.

His claws dug into the ground.

He looked at his father.

"Did you see that?"

King Albion nodded.

"I saw."

Albion's grin became even wider.

He could feel something else inside him.

A warmth in his chest.

Something powerful.

He took a deep breath.

King Albion's eyes narrowed.

"Albion, wait."

Albion released the breath.

A brilliant beam of light erupted from his mouth.

The blast tore across the training ground and struck a distant stone target.

BOOM!

The target cracked.

Light scattered across the ground.

Albion slowly lowered his head.

Smoke drifted from the stone.

He blinked.

"Wow."

Focalors stared at the damaged target.

"That was Light Magic."

Albion looked at her.

"I know mother, Father though me"

King Albion nodded.

"I though you well."

Albion looked incredibly pleased with himself.

He opened his mouth again.

King Albion immediately raised a hand.

"Don't."

Albion stopped.

"But..."

"One breath attack at a time."

Albion sighed.

"Fine."

King Albion walked toward him.

"Your Hybrid Form is much stronger than your Human Form."

Albion nodded.

"But it is still weaker than your full Dragon Form."

Albion looked at his wings.

"So this is the middle ground?"

"Exactly."

King Albion folded his arms.

"Your Human Form gives you greater control and lets you interact with other races easily."

He pointed toward Albion's wings.

"Your Dragon Form gives you your full physical power."

Then he pointed at Albion's Hybrid Form.

"And your Hybrid Form sits between them."

Albion thought about it.

"So it's the best of both?"

King Albion shook his head.

"Not exactly."

Albion blinked.

"Then what is it?"

King Albion smiled.

"The Form of Potential."

Albion tilted his head.

"Potential?"

"Yes."

King Albion looked at his son.

"Your Human Form is what you were born with."

"Your Dragon Form is what you truly are."

He pointed toward Albion.

"But your Hybrid Form represents what you can become."

Albion looked at his claws.

His wings.

His scales.

He slowly smiled.

"The Form of Potential."

King Albion nodded.

"Exactly."

Albion looked proud.

"That's actually really cool."

King Albion's expression suddenly became serious.

"There is one thing, however."

Albion looked at him.

"What?"

King Albion leaned closer.

"Never say that to a Red-Eyes Clan Dragon."

Albion blinked.

"Why?"

Focalors immediately started laughing.

King Albion sighed.

"The Red-Eyes Clan has a very strong belief that Red-Eyes represents potential."

Albion stared at his father.

"Oh."

"Yes."

"So if I tell one of them that my Hybrid Form is the Form of Potential..."

"You may start an argument."

Albion thought about it.

"How bad?"

King Albion paused.

"Very."

Focalors wiped a tear from her eye.

"Your father once spent three hours arguing with a Red-Eyes elder over this."

Albion looked at King Albion.

"You did?"

King Albion looked away.

"He was wrong."

Focalors laughed.

Albion grinned.

"So the Red-Eyes Clan thinks they're the Dragons of Potential?"

King Albion nodded.

"Among other things."

Albion looked thoughtful.

"Then I won't say it."

A pause.

"Probably."

King Albion immediately looked at him.

"Albion."

"I'm joking!"

King Albion gave him a suspicious look.

Albion laughed.

He spread his wings again.

"Okay, so I've got speed, flight, claws, scales, stronger senses, and Light Magic breath."

He looked at his father.

"What else?"

King Albion smiled.

"That's what we're going to discover."

Albion's tail moved excitedly behind him.

"Again?"

"Again."

Albion grinned.

"Let's go."

Albion spent the next several minutes testing his Hybrid Form.

At first, he focused on his physical abilities.

Then he remembered something else.

His Glyphic.

Albion raised one hand.

"Let's see."

He focused.

A Glyph appeared in front of his palm.

It formed almost instantly.

Albion blinked.

"That was faster."

King Albion watched carefully.

"Try another."

Albion nodded.

He formed a second Glyph.

Then a third.

Each one appeared faster than the last.

Albion stared at them.

"Before, I had to concentrate for several seconds."

He moved his fingers.

The Glyphs shifted around his hand.

"Now they just appear."

King Albion nodded.

"Your Dragon energy is strengthening your magic."

Albion looked at the Glyphs.

"Does that mean..."

He formed another Glyph.

Then another.

Then another.

Soon, several Glyphs floated around him.

Albion grinned.

"I can make them much faster."

Focalors watched with interest.

"Try changing them."

Albion focused on the first Glyph.

It changed shape.

The second followed.

Then the third.

He barely had to think about it.

"Whoa."

Albion looked at his father.

"It's easier."

King Albion nodded.

"Your body is no longer fighting against your magic."

Albion tilted his head.

"What does that mean?"

"Your Human Form limits how much Dragon energy you can naturally channel."

King Albion pointed toward the Glyphs.

"Your Hybrid Form removes some of those limits."

Albion looked at his hands.

"So my magic was being held back?"

"Partly."

Albion smiled.

"That's awesome."

He then remembered something else.

His three elements.

Water.

Light.

Dark.

Albion raised his hand.

A small sphere of water formed above his palm.

It moved smoothly.

No resistance.

No shaking.

Albion stared.

"Water..."

He closed his fingers.

The water became a thin stream.

Then a ring.

Then several small floating droplets.

He hadn't struggled at all.

Albion looked surprised.

"That's much easier."

King Albion nodded.

"Try Light."

Albion changed the Glyph.

Light gathered around his hand.

It was brighter than before.

But it didn't hurt his eyes.

He moved his hand.

The light followed.

Albion smiled.

"Light is easier too."

Focalors watched closely.

"And Dark?"

Albion hesitated.

"Dark is usually the hardest."

He focused.

A dark sphere appeared beside his hand.

Normally, Albion had to be very careful with Dark Elemental magic.

It could become unstable if he lost concentration.

This time?

Nothing happened.

The dark energy simply floated there.

Stable.

Quiet.

Albion stared at it.

"...What?"

He moved his hand.

The sphere followed.

He made it larger.

Then smaller.

Then split it into three smaller spheres.

Albion's mouth opened.

"I can control it."

King Albion nodded.

"Better than before."

Albion looked at all three elements.

Water flowed around one hand.

Light shone around the other.

Dark energy hovered between them.

He slowly brought them closer.

Focalors immediately noticed.

"Albion."

He stopped.

"What?"

"Don't fuse them yet."

Albion sighed.

"I wasn't going to."

King Albion raised an eyebrow.

Albion looked away.

"...Okay, I was thinking about it."

King Albion shook his head.

"One thing at a time."

Albion dismissed the three elements.

The Glyphs disappeared.

He looked at his hands.

His Hybrid Form had changed more than he expected.

It wasn't simply stronger.

His magic felt different.

More natural.

Like his body had finally caught up with what his mind had been trying to do.

Albion smiled.

"So that's another advantage."

King Albion nodded.

"Your Hybrid Form doesn't just increase your physical abilities."

"It improves my magic too."

"Yes."

Albion looked toward the training grounds.

He was already imagining what he could do with this.

Faster Glyphs.

Better elemental control.

Stronger flight.

Greater speed.

Light Breath.

And he hadn't even learned what his full Dragon Form could do yet.

Albion's tail moved excitedly.

"Can I try my Dragon Form now?"

King Albion immediately shook his head.

"No."

Albion's face fell.

"Why?"

"Because you just learned your Hybrid Form."

He walked toward his son.

"You need to learn how to control this form before you attempt the next one."

Albion sighed.

"Fine."

King Albion smiled.

"Good."

He placed a hand on Albion's shoulder.

"Now return to your Human Form."

Albion nodded.

"Okay."

He closed his eyes.

He focused on his body.

The scales slowly faded.

His claws disappeared.

His horns vanished.

His wings became smaller before disappearing completely.

His tail faded away.

The black in his eyes returned to normal.

The light surrounding his body disappeared.

Albion opened his eyes.

He was human again.

He looked down at his hands.

"That was easier too."

King Albion nodded.

"Good."

Albion smiled.

"So I can switch between them now?"

"With practice."

Albion grinned.

"I'll practice."

Focalors walked over and hugged him.

"I'm proud of you."

Albion smiled.

"Thanks, Mom."

He looked toward his father.

King Albion gave him a proud smile.

"Today, you took your first real step as a Dragon."

Albion looked at the training ground.

Then at his hands.

He smiled.

'I'm getting stronger.'

And for once, Albion wasn't thinking about becoming stronger for a fight.

He was simply happy to discover another part of himself.
