Chapter 43 - Combat Spells

Spellcode looked at Albion.

"For four years, I taught you the basics. You have learned almost every defensive spell and how to fuse Glyphs."

Albion nodded.

"Finally."

The Charmers were already gathered around the training courtyard.

Lyna stepped forward.

Spellcode pointed toward her.

"Lyna, why don't you show him a Light spell?"

Lyna nodded.

"Alright."

She raised her staff.

A small Glyph appeared in front of her.

It was made of glowing golden lines.

The symbols slowly rotated.

Then the Glyph expanded.

Three brilliant swords appeared around Lyna.

They floated in the air, each one shining with pale golden light.

Albion's eyes widened.

"Whoa."

Lyna smiled.

"This is Swords of Revealing Light."

Albion stared at the three swords.

"Swords?"

"That's the name."

Lyna moved her hand.

The three swords slowly rotated around her.

"They are Light-based defensive weapons. They reveal hidden things and create a field that prevents hostile creatures from attacking."

Albion looked at the swords.

"So they're basically magical swords that say, 'No fighting.'"

Lyna giggled.

"That's one way to put it."

Spellcode nodded.

"It's more complicated than that."

He pointed toward the swords.

"The spell creates three manifestations of Light. They remain active around the caster and establish a revealing field."

Albion looked interested.

"What does the revealing part do?"

Lyna smiled.

"Watch."

She turned toward the training field.

Spellcode had placed several small targets around the courtyard.

Some were visible.

Others were hidden beneath magical camouflage.

Lyna raised her staff.

"Reveal."

The three swords suddenly flashed.

A wave of golden light spread across the courtyard.

Several invisible targets immediately became visible.

Albion's eyes widened.

"Oh."

The targets that had been hiding behind illusions suddenly appeared.

One was behind a tree.

Another was beneath the ground.

A third had been hiding inside a magical barrier.

Albion looked impressed.

"So it can see through illusions?"

"Among other things."

Lyna pointed her staff toward the targets.

The three swords moved.

They didn't attack.

Instead, they formed a triangle around the training area.

A circle of golden light appeared between them.

The moment the spell activated, Albion felt something change.

The air became heavy.

Not physically.

Magically.

It felt like the entire area had suddenly become hostile to violence.

Albion looked around.

"What did you do?"

Lyna smiled.

"Swords of Revealing Light can suppress hostile movement within its field."

Spellcode nodded.

"Anything inside the field that tries to launch a direct attack will find itself unable to move forward."

Albion blinked.

"So it doesn't physically stop them."

"Correct."

"It tells their body, 'No.'"

"More accurately, it tells their magic."

Albion looked at the three floating swords again.

"That is actually really cool."

Spellcode smiled.

"And that is only one Light spell."

Albion's eyes lit up.

"There are more?"

"Hundreds."

Albion immediately turned toward him.

"Teach me."

Spellcode laughed.

"That's what we're here for."

Lyna lowered her staff.

The three swords slowly faded away.

Albion looked disappointed.

"Wait."

Lyna looked at him.

"What?"

"Can I try it?"

Spellcode smiled.

"Of course."

Albion stepped forward.

He raised his hand.

"Okay."

He closed his eyes.

He remembered what his father had taught him.

Light wasn't simply something he controlled.

It was part of him.

Albion focused his mana.

A small Glyph appeared.

It flickered.

Then disappeared.

Albion frowned.

"Again."

He tried once more.

The Glyph appeared.

This time it remained stable.

Albion smiled.

"I did it."

Spellcode nodded.

"Good. Now shape it."

Albion concentrated.

The Glyph expanded.

Golden light spilled across the ground.

One sword appeared.

Then another.

Then...

A third sword formed.

Albion's eyes widened.

The three swords floated around him.

Lyna smiled.

"Perfect."

Albion grinned.

"I made Swords of Revealing Light!"

Spellcode shook his head.

"No."

Albion's smile disappeared.

"What?"

Spellcode pointed toward the swords.

"You made the basic structure."

Albion blinked.

"What's the difference?"

Spellcode smiled.

"Now you have to learn how to actually use it."

Albion sighed.

"Of course."

Dharc laughed from the side.

"Welcome to magic."

Albion looked at him.

"I hate learning."

Dharc shrugged.

"You're a prince. You'll survive."

Albion looked at the three glowing swords floating beside him.

He smiled.

"Still worth it."

Spellcode stared at Albion.

"Now, test it out. It's not like you're going to get the effect correct on your first try. If you do, I'll teach you a higher-level spell."

Albion nodded.

"Okay."

He raised his hand.

The Glyph appeared in front of him.

Golden lines spread through the air.

Albion focused on the spell Lyna had just demonstrated.

He remembered the three swords.

The revealing light.

The barrier.

The feeling of the spell.

He pushed his mana into the Glyph.

The runes suddenly brightened.

Three golden swords appeared around him.

Perfectly formed.

Stable.

Not a single flicker.

Albion opened his eyes.

"I did it."

Silence.

Lyna stared at him.

The other Charmers stared at him.

Spellcode stared at him.

Nobody spoke.

Albion looked around.

"What?"

Spellcode slowly walked toward him.

"You got it right."

Albion nodded.

"Yeah."

"On your first try."

"Yeah."

Spellcode stared at the three swords.

Then at Albion.

Then back at the swords.

"...I spent four years teaching you defensive magic."

Albion blinked.

"Yeah?"

"And you just learned a combat spell in one attempt."

Albion gave him an awkward smile.

"Is that bad?"

Spellcode slowly shook his head.

"No."

He sighed.

"It's just annoying."

Lyna giggled.

"I told you he was talented."

Spellcode rubbed his forehead.

"I know he's talented."

He looked at Albion.

"Fine."

He pointed toward Lyna.

"Lyna."

Lyna straightened.

"Yes?"

"Show him Raigeki."

Albion's eyes widened.

"Raigeki?"

Spellcode nodded.

"Yes."

He gave Albion a serious look.

"Now let's see if you're still lucky."

Lyna stepped forward.

She raised her staff.

Her expression became much more serious.

"Raigeki isn't like Swords of Revealing Light."

Albion nodded.

"I figured."

"This is a pure offensive Light spell."

Lyna moved her staff upward.

A small Glyph appeared above her.

Unlike the soft glow of Swords of Revealing Light, this Glyph crackled with violent energy.

Albion's eyes widened.

The Glyph began to spin.

The clouds above the courtyard darkened.

A deep rumble shook the ground.

Albion looked upward.

"That's a lot of power."

Lyna nodded.

"Raigeki calls down a massive lightning strike. The spell is designed to strike every hostile monster within the chosen area."

That matched the basic idea of the actual Raigeki card, whose effect is simply to destroy all monsters the opponent controls.

But seeing it as actual magic was very different.

Lyna pointed her staff toward a row of training targets.

"Raigeki."

BOOOOOOM!

A gigantic bolt of lightning crashed down.

The entire courtyard flashed white.

Thunder shook the walls.

The training targets vanished beneath the blast.

When the light faded, several smoking holes remained in the ground.

Albion's mouth hung open.

"...Whoa."

Lyna lowered her staff.

"That's Raigeki."

Albion stared at the destruction.

Spellcode looked at him.

"Your turn."

Albion slowly turned toward him.

"You're joking."

"No."

"I'm supposed to do that?"

"Yes."

Albion looked at the smoking training field.

Then at his tiny six-year-old Human World body.

Then back at Spellcode.

"...Dad is going to kill you if I blow up the mansion."

Spellcode smiled.

"Then don't blow up the mansion."

Albion sighed.

"Easy for you to say."

He stepped forward.

His expression became serious.

He raised his hand.

A Glyph began forming.

Lightning crackled around the edges.

Albion's eyes widened.

"Okay."

He focused.

"Raigeki."

BOOM!

Spellcode stared at the burned ground.

Smoke slowly rose from the training field.

A few pieces of scorched grass fell back onto the ground.

Spellcode was silent for a moment.

Then he chuckled.

"Well, I guess those four years paid off."

Albion looked at him.

"I was already doing ridiculous things with Light Push Glyphs and Light Orb."

Spellcode stopped smiling.

"...Yes."

He rubbed his forehead.

"I am very well aware."

Vesiculo looked away.

She suddenly became very interested in a nearby tree.

Albion noticed.

He narrowed his eyes.

"Vesiculo."

She whistled innocently.

Albion pointed at her.

"You're the reason I turned Light Orb into a flashbang."

Vesiculo continued whistling.

"And you're also the reason I learned how to stack Light Push Glyphs."

She looked toward the sky.

"Wow. What a nice cloud."

Albion stared at her.

"You were trying to kill me at the time."

Vesiculo finally looked back at him.

"I was an assassin."

"That doesn't make it better."

"I know."

Spellcode sighed.

"Yes, I remember that incident."

Albion crossed his arms.

"You all keep saying that."

Spellcode looked at the smoking ground again.

"Because we remember the explosion."

Albion smiled awkwardly.

"It wasn't that bad."

Everyone stared at him.

Vesiculo raised an eyebrow.

"You almost blew a hole through three trees."

Albion paused.

"...Okay, maybe it was a little bad."

Spellcode shook his head.

"Enough reminiscing."

He pointed toward the training field.

"You're going to practice Raigeki a few more times."

Albion looked at the destroyed targets.

"How many times?"

"Until you can cast it without losing control."

Albion nodded.

"Got it."

Spellcode raised one finger.

"And before you ask, no, you are not allowed to practice it inside the mansion."

Albion frowned.

"I wasn't going to."

Spellcode stared at him.

"Albion."

"Okay, I was thinking about it."

Vesiculo covered her mouth to hide a laugh.

Spellcode sighed.

"Just practice."

Albion turned toward the training field.

He raised his hand.

The Glyph began forming again.

Lightning crackled around him.

Spellcode watched closely.

This time, he wasn't smiling.

The first Raigeki had been powerful.

Far too powerful for a beginner.

But Albion had managed to control it.

That was what interested him.

The boy wasn't simply producing massive amounts of mana.

He was understanding the structure of the spell.

That was something very different.

Spellcode narrowed his eyes.

'This child is going to be troublesome.'

Albion looked over his shoulder.

"Did you say something?"

Spellcode smiled.

"No."

Albion shrugged.

"Okay."

He turned back toward the targets.

"Raigeki."

Another bolt of lightning crashed down.

BOOM!

Spellcode watched the spell carefully.

Then he nodded.

"Better."

Albion grinned.

"Really?"

"Yes."

Spellcode folded his arms.

"Now do it again."

Albion sighed.

"Why does learning magic always turn into homework?"

Dharc laughed.

"Because you're learning magic."

Albion looked at him.

"That doesn't answer my question."

"No."

Dharc smiled.

"It answers it perfectly."

A few hours passed.

The sky above the training courtyard had become covered in dark clouds.

Thunder continued to rumble overhead.

Asterion and Scarlet finally arrived.

Asterion stopped.

He looked up.

Then he looked at the burned training field.

Then back at the sky.

"...What happened?"

Scarlet stared at the massive scorch marks across the ground.

"Why does it look like a war happened here?"

Albion raised his hand.

"Magic practice."

Asterion slowly looked at him.

"Your magic practice caused a thunderstorm?"

Albion shrugged.

"Apparently."

Spellcode sighed.

"Albion has been learning Raigeki."

Asterion's eyes widened.

"Raigeki?"

Scarlet looked at the destroyed training dummies.

"He learned that?"

Spellcode nodded.

"First try."

Silence.

Asterion stared at Albion.

"You learned Raigeki on your first try?"

Albion scratched his head.

"Yeah."

Scarlet looked at Spellcode.

"Are you sure he's actually a beginner?"

Spellcode sighed.

"Four years of training."

Asterion nodded slowly.

"Right."

He looked at Albion.

"That explains it."

Albion smiled.

"See?"

Spellcode pointed at him.

"Don't get too proud."

Albion's smile disappeared.

"Right."

Spellcode turned toward him.

"Now we're moving on."

Albion blinked.

"Already?"

"Yes."

Spellcode walked toward another section of the training field.

"This spell will test your control more than your destructive power."

Albion followed him.

"What spell?"

Spellcode looked toward Lyna.

"Gathering Light."

Lyna stepped forward.

She raised her staff.

"This spell gathers your own energy and shapes it into seven forms of Light."

Albion looked interested.

"Seven?"

"Seven."

Lyna moved her staff in a slow circle.

A Glyph appeared.

It was much larger than the previous ones.

The center of the Glyph began glowing.

Then seven small lights appeared around it.

Red.

Orange.

Yellow.

Green.

Blue.

Indigo.

Violet.

They slowly floated around Lyna.

Albion stared.

"That's pretty."

Lyna smiled.

"It looks harmless."

Albion nodded.

"It does."

Spellcode smiled.

"That's the problem."

The seven lights suddenly began spinning faster.

The air around them started shaking.

Albion's expression changed.

"Wait."

Lyna pointed her staff toward a training dummy.

The seven lights shot forward.

BOOM!

The training dummy disappeared.

Not broke.

Not burned.

It was simply gone.

Albion stared at the empty space.

A few pieces of dust floated through the air.

"...Where did the dummy go?"

Lyna lowered her staff.

"It was destroyed."

Albion looked at the empty patch of ground.

"I can see that."

Asterion stared.

"That spell just erased it."

Scarlet nodded.

"That was supposed to be a Light spell?"

Spellcode smiled.

"Yes."

Albion slowly turned toward him.

"You said this would test my control."

"It will."

Albion pointed at the missing training dummy.

"That doesn't look very controlled."

Spellcode chuckled.

"That's why you're going to learn it."

Albion sighed.

"Of course."

Spellcode pointed toward the training field.

"Your task is simple."

Albion waited.

"Gather your energy."

The seven colors began forming around Lyna again.

"Shape it into seven Lights."

Albion nodded.

"And then?"

Spellcode smiled.

"Don't erase the entire training field."

Albion stared at him.

"That's your actual instruction?"

"Yes."

Asterion laughed.

Scarlet covered her mouth.

Even Lyna giggled.

Albion sighed.

"Fine."

He stepped forward.

He raised his hand.

"Gathering Light."

A Glyph appeared.

Seven different lights began forming around him.

Albion's eyes widened.

"Okay..."

The seven lights slowly rotated around his body.

Spellcode watched closely.

"Good."

Albion focused harder.

The seven lights grew brighter.

Red.

Orange.

Yellow.

Green.

Blue.

Indigo.

Violet.

Albion smiled.

"I think I've got it."

Spellcode's expression became serious.

"Then fire."

Albion pointed toward the next training dummy.

The seven lights shot forward.

BOOOOOOM!

The entire courtyard shook.

Everyone froze.

Smoke covered the training field.

Albion slowly lowered his hand.

"...Did I do it?"

The smoke cleared.

The training dummy was gone.

So was the ground underneath it.

Asterion stared.

Scarlet stared.

Lyna stared.

Spellcode stared.

Albion looked at the crater.

"...Oops."

Spellcode slowly rubbed his forehead.

"You're going to need a lot more practice."
