Chapter 690 - Chapter 544

The galley of the Dreadnought Thalassa hummed with the quiet warmth of a ship at rest. The air smelled of freshly brewed tea and the faint sweetness of cake, a combination that had turned the otherwise utilitarian space into something approaching cozy. The polished metal table held an assortment of mismatched cups and a plate of sliced confection that Eliane had produced from somewhere with the casual pride of a chef who always had something ready.

Bianca Yvonne Clark leaned back in her chair, her grease-stained overalls open over a floral blouse, her magnifying goggles pushed up on her forehead. She gestured expansively with a cup of tea, nearly sloshing its contents over the edge. "Like, I am totally serious. The navigation system on this thing is, like, insane. It can, like, predict weather patterns years in advance. Years! That's, like, better than any log pose."

Captain Kapi Bash sat across from her, his compact bushbaby frame barely reaching the table's height. His enormous amber eyes gleamed with interest, and his silver-grey fur was still slightly ruffled from the chaos of the harbor. He took a bite of cake, chewing with enthusiasm as if he had not had a proper meal in hours. "Years? That's impossible. Even the most seasoned sailors can barely predict a storm a day ahead."

Lieutenant Corin Rain sat beside him, his wild dog coat a mottled pattern of ochre and black. His dark eyes were fixed on his tea cup with the intensity. He took a measured sip, his voice flat but curious. "And you trust this system?"

Bianca waved her hand dismissively. "Like, trust is a strong word. But it's, like, better than nothing. And, like, Halia knows what she's talking about. Like, most of the time."

Eliane stood at the counter, her silver hair tied back, a smudge of flour on her cheek. She poured more tea with the practiced grace of someone who had spent her childhood in a kitchen. "More cake, anyone? I think I over-baked it a little, but it's still good."

Barren Brahnn lumbered over, his massive brown bear frame somehow fitting into the galley without knocking anything over. He held a plate with a slice of cake that was already half-eaten. "I can help with the dishes. Just show me where you keep the—" He paused, staring at the sink with the intense concentration as if trying to solve a puzzle. "—the water thing."

Kapi's grin widened. "The sink, Barren. It's called a sink."

Barren nodded slowly. "Right. The sink. I knew that."

Ember sat in the corner, her neon-pink space buns drooping slightly, her mismatched eyes fixed on the table. She held her teacup with both hands, her fingers twitching with the restless energy of a creature barely containing a storm. Her voice was quiet, almost lucid. "The tea is... nice. Warm." She paused, her head tilting as if listening to something. "Josiah says it's too sweet. But I like it."

Bianca glanced at her, a flicker of concern crossing her face. "Like, cool. Just don't, like, explode anything, okay?"

Ember's smile was sharp, but it didn't reach her eyes. "No promises."

Kapi leaned forward, his voice bright with curiosity. "So, where would be the best place to start a tour? I've never been on a ship like this. It's—" He gestured at the galley walls. "—like nothing I've ever seen."

Corin nodded in agreement. "The architecture alone is remarkable. The materials, the design—it's ancient, but it's more advanced than anything in Ushirika."

Bianca opened her mouth to respond—

The ship lurched.

The teacups slid across the table in a shrieking chorus of porcelain against metal, tumbling over the edge and shattering against the floor. The plate of cake followed, its contents splattering across the deck. Eliane stumbled, catching herself on the counter. Barren's massive frame swayed, his arms pinwheeling for balance. Ember's teacup flew from her hands, and she watched it shatter with an expression of detached fascination.

Kapi's voice cut through the chaos, sharp with alarm. "Is that normal?"

Bianca's answer was immediate, her voice flat with disbelief. "Like, no."

The alarms began to wail, a piercing cry that filled the galley with red light and warning.

Bianca's hand shot out, slapping a panel on the wall. "Halia! Report!"

A shimmer of blue-white light coalesced in the center of the galley. Halia materialized, her silver-blue hair drifting as if caught in an invisible current. Her eyes were already streaming with data, the code flickering across her pupils in rapid succession. Her voice was calm, measured—the calm of a system processing disaster.

"Reading extreme gravitational and seismic anomalies. The ship is experiencing rapid displacement. I advise—"

The ship lurched again, harder this time. Everyone was flung to the far side of the galley, their bodies slamming against the metal bulkhead with a chorus of grunts and curses. Bianca's head cracked against a support beam, and she saw stars. "Like what the hell, Halia!"

Halia hovered, her form flickering with the strain of maintaining her projection. For a fraction of a second, her serene expression cracked into something that looked almost like shock. "Incoming."

Everyone covered their ears as a deafening resonance of B♭7 emanated from everywhere at once. The sound was impossible, terrible—a note that vibrated in the very bones of the ship. The galley's lights flickered, and the alarms stuttered as if drowning in the same sonic assault.

Then the sound faded.

Halia's voice cut through the ringing silence. "Report to the bridge. Immediately."

Bianca scrambled to her feet, her hand pressed to her head. "Like, what the hell?!"

Eliane's voice was sharp with panic. "What should we do?!"

Bianca snapped, her authority cutting through the chaos. "Like, get to the bridge, like now!" She spun on her heel, her eyes fixing on Kapi and Corin. "Like, follow me!"

---

They filed through the corridors, their bodies thrown from side to side as the ship bucked and rolled. The ancient metal groaned around them, and the lights flickered with the erratic rhythm of a dying heartbeat. Eliane stumbled, caught by Barren's massive paw. Ember's laughter—a high, manic cackle—began to build in her throat, her eyes wild with the thrill of the chaos.

Bianca threw the hatch open, revealing the bridge. "Like, take a seat and like strap in, but like, don't touch anything!" She vaulted into the pilot's seat, her hands flying across the controls. "Halia! Like, status!"

Halia materialized on the bridge, her holographic form flickering. "I advise you strap in immediately."

Bianca rolled her eyes, but she was already securing the harness. "Like, serious?"

Halia scanned the group, her eyes passing over each of them. "We are about to—"

The ship jerked, the mooring lines snapping like dry twigs. The submarine was pulled away from the dock, its massive hull surging forward with impossible speed. Everyone was slammed against their restraints, their stomachs dropping as the Dreadnought Thalassa rolled and tumbled through the water.

Corin's voice was strained, his dark eyes wide. "This cannot be good."

Bianca's response was a strained grunt. "Like, you think?"

The ship continued its violent dance, rolling and pitching until, finally, it righted itself. The alarms faded, replaced by the low hum of the engines and the distant groan of the sea.

Bianca took a ragged breath, her voice hoarse. "Is everyone, like, okay?"

A chorus of groans and nods answered her.

The main view screen flickered to life.

Bianca stared, her jaw going slack. "Like, what the hell."

The screen showed a world in chaos as they sat teetering on top of a cresting wave that pierced the sky. Below them, a massive wave stretched across the horizon, its crest impossibly high, its surface shimmering with an unnatural rubbery sheen. Rain hammered down in sheets, and through the storm, a massive sky island descended from the clouds, its white-cloud surface cracking as it fell.

Then it exploded.

The shockwave rippled across the screen, and the submarine rocked with the force of it.

Halia materialized beside Bianca, her voice carrying the calm certainty of a system that had just verified the impossible. "It appears the captain is taking action."

Bianca's head snapped around. "Like, what are you talking about? And like, what is going on? Like, where are we?"

Halia's eyes flickered with data. "We are on the crest of a giant rubberized tsunami wave."

Bianca blinked. "Like, what?"

Corin's voice was sharp with disbelief. "Did you say rubber?"

Halia nodded, her holographic form shimmering. "That is correct. It is the reason the island has not been flooded. The sea is being held in stasis in a rubbery state."

Bianca shook her head, her mind struggling to process. "So, like, a giant trampoline?"

Halia tilted her head. "That is one way to think of it."

Bianca's voice rose with frustration. "But, like, why?"

A holographic image of the planet materialized, spinning slowly above the bridge. Bianca's curse was sharp and immediate. "Like, is that even real?"

Halia's voice was quiet, with the weight of a truth that had just been verified. "I have run my calculations, and my findings are verified. The Red Line is no more. The lost continent has surfaced. Reverse Mountain and Mary Geoise have been destroyed. The submerged Fish-Man Island has surfaced, and the Eve Tree blooms once again. The Sky Islands are descending, and the pyrobloin is dissolving."

Bianca opened her mouth to respond—

The rubbery wave collapsed.

The submarine dropped with a sickening lurch, its hull slamming against the water with a force that sent everyone bouncing against their restraints. The ship bounced once, twice, three times, each impact jarring them to the bone.

Ember's voice rose in a shriek of protest. "Make it stop!"

Bianca's response was a strained grunt. "Like, for real!"

The submarine splashed back into the water, its hull settling with a groan of relief. The bridge fell silent, broken only by the ragged breaths of its occupants.

Bianca groaned, her hand pressed to her head. "Like, how did all this happen? And like, what is next?"

Halia hovered, her eyes streaming with data. "It will take several hours for the Sky Islands to settle and the waters to recede. I will be able to connect with the ancient satellites once again and obtain an updated scan of the planet. I will monitor the airwaves for communication."

Bianca nodded, her voice flat. "Like, cool. But, like, can we return to the harbor?"

Halia shook her head, her holographic form flickering. "I would not advise it. This island will be dramatically reshaped, and the harbor may no longer be a viable option. I will inform you once it is safe."

Bianca's shoulders slumped. "Like, cool. I guess."

She turned to the group, her voice carrying the weary authority of a captain who had just survived the impossible. "Okay, so, like, it looks like we are going to be out here for, like, a while. So, like, I am going to check out the engines and stuff and make sure there was not, like, any major damage or whatever." She stood, her legs unsteady beneath her. "Like, don't go outside or anything, but you can, like, go and chill in the galley or whatever."

Eliane nodded, her voice soft. "Okay. I bet it's a mess."

Kapi's voice cut through the tension, bright with determination. "We can assist with clean-up. But we should probably check in, too."

Corin nodded, his dark eyes fixed on Bianca. "Agreed. We need to know the status of the island."

Eliane nodded, moving to unbuckle Ember, who was still holding her head and groaning. "Come on. Let's get you settled."

Barren lumbered forward, his massive paw extended. "I can help. Just tell me what to do."

Bianca managed a tired smile. "Like, I know you can, big guy. Just, like, don't break anything."

Barren's face lit up with slow understanding. "Oh. Right. I'll try."

The bridge fell into a tense silence as they all began to move, each of them processing the chaos that had just unfolded. The world was breaking around them, and they were adrift in a ship that had been lost for centuries.

But they were still together as the New Dawn was being birthed.
