Chapter 129 - Chapter 128: The Mysterious Swamp and the Great Banyan Tree

"Truly astonishing!"

Hovering above the swamp, Kahn stared at the towering Great Banyan Tree rising from the center. His eyes were filled with awe.

Guided by the simple hand-drawn map Guru Pathik had given him, he had ridden Nike day and night until he reached this place.

Now, from high above, he could finally see it with his own eyes.

The view was magnificent.

The swamp was encircled by mountains, stretching for kilometers, and in its center stood a colossal banyan tree—over a hundred meters tall—so massive it dominated everything around it.

From the sky, it looked like an enormous green mushroom sprouting from the earth—a sight too surreal to be true.

With the enhancement of Spiritbending, the scene before him became even more breathtaking.

"No wonder Guru Pathik said that. He wasn't exaggerating at all."

To ordinary people, this was merely a gigantic tree.

But to Kahn, every trunk, every branch, and every vine pulsed with something… condensed Spirit.

This swamp wasn't just a swamp.

This banyan tree wasn't just a tree.

It was a sea of Spirit, a physical manifestation of Spirit condensed into tangible form.

Spirit flowed ceaselessly—rising from the ground through the roots, traveling through the tree's veins, and then returning back into the earth.

No wonder Guru Pathik called it "a tendril the world extends outward."

The Spirit within the tree moved like blood in a human body.

It truly felt alive.

A concept from his past life surfaced in his mind—

The World Tree.

And this banyan tree before him absolutely resembled one.

Kahn guided Nike downward, landing on a thick, sturdy root at the tree's base.

Nike separated into East, South, West, and North, fluttering around curiously.

"This place looks like the Spirit World!"

"Did we return to the Spirit World?"

"This tree is huge!"

"Kahn, can we go play in the forest?!"

Kahn couldn't help but smile at their excitement.

"Go ahead. Just don't wander too far."

"Yay!"

He wasn't sure what dangers lurked in the swamp, but even if they couldn't win a fight, the little ones were more than capable of escaping.

He scanned the swamp. Its surface seemed ordinary enough.

The interwoven branches overhead blocked most of the sunlight, leaving the interior dim and gloomy.

But he knew this swamp was anything but simple.

He'd explore it in detail later—just not today. He didn't come here for sightseeing.

Kahn turned to climb the root—when suddenly—

Swoosh!

More than a dozen vines shot out from beneath the swamp water.

"?!"

They lunged toward him from multiple angles, trying to bind him. Kahn lightly kicked off the ground, leaping out of the encirclement.

The vines, having missed, didn't pursue. Instead, they retracted into the water—then rose again, twisting and interlocking until they formed a massive humanoid figure.

A giant made of vines.

It swung an arm, turning it into a whip. The other arm split into dozens of tendrils trying to restrain him.

Kahn still didn't retaliate.

Relying on his movement technique, he danced through the attacks with effortless grace, making the vines appear clumsy despite their flexibility.

He even spoke casually while dodging:

"Excuse me, are you the guardian of this swamp? I don't mean any harm."

"I came here under the guidance of Guru Pathik, seeking answers to my confusion."

The vine giant paused.

Then it dissolved—vines falling away to reveal a human figure within.

The man had messy gray-white hair and a beard, about Iroh's age, wearing nothing but a makeshift pair of pants that barely covered anything—like a wild forest hermit.

"You know Uncle Guru Pathik?"

Uncle?

Kahn blinked, then nodded.

"I trained under the Guru for a time. He told me about this place."

"Oh! Then come with me."

The man immediately relaxed and motioned for him to follow. As they walked, he began explaining the Great Banyan Tree.

His name was Huu.

Honestly, Kahn almost laughed at it.

Huu was a Waterbender whose job was to keep evildoers away from the swamp and scare off ordinary people who wandered in—hence the earlier attack.

Though they lived within Earth Kingdom territory, his tribe was still part of the Water Tribe—just a separate, independent branch unlike the North or South.

Their people had lived in the swamp for generations with almost no contact with the outside world, living simple, peaceful lives.

As for how Huu knew Guru Pathik—apparently, Pathik had lived here when he was young and had been good friends with Huu's father, the previous guardian.

Kahn could only think, Damn, that's some ancient history.

During their conversation, Huu also shared his own experience with the Great Banyan Tree.

"This swamp has a magical power," Huu said with a grin. "When I was young, I heard the Great Banyan Tree calling me. I received enlightenment beneath it."

"I realized that the Great Banyan Tree is like the whole world… and we are like the Great Banyan Tree. We, the world, and the tree are all one living organism. Different on the surface, but branches of the same whole."

"Everyone is a branch of the same whole…?"

Kahn was surprised. He didn't expect a half-naked swamp hermit to be this philosophical.

But he didn't dismiss it either.

In a world with real Spirit and bending, what if this concept was actually true?

As they spoke, they arrived at the highest part of the root, right beside the enormous trunk. From here, the entire swamp was visible.

"This is it," Huu said.

"I don't know what you're seeking, but if you listen carefully, I believe you'll find something."

"Thank you for your guidance."

Kahn sat cross-legged on the root, entering his usual meditative posture. He recalled Huu's words, then focused.

The Great Banyan Tree connects to the world.

The world, the tree, and we are part of the same whole.

Separation is an illusion.

Life and death are illusions.

Time and space are illusions…

As he merged his senses with the Great Banyan Tree, his awareness expanded—flowing along its roots, spreading through the swamp, diving deep into the earth, sinking further and further…

The banyan tree's full structure emerged in his mind.

He began to feel the pulse of life.

He began to hear the tree's call…

Outside, Huu's eyes widened in disbelief.

Thin roots sprouted from the ground around Kahn, slowly wrapping around his body—as if the Great Banyan Tree itself was embracing him.

Kahn's aura and spiritual flow synchronized with the tree.

When the roots fully adhered to him, he seemed to merge with the tree—no longer distinguishable as separate.

"What… what is happening?!"
