People from each nation in this world were easy to distinguish by clothing. Every tribe used a unified palette:
Earth Kingdom—greens and yellows.
Water Tribe—blues and whites.
Fire Nation—reds and browns.
And the siblings standing before him wore very typical Water Tribe attire.
Most of the time, people's clothing alone revealed their origins.
That was why, after learning the swamp was located within the Earth Kingdom, Kahn had deliberately changed clothes before coming—just to avoid unnecessary trouble.
But something else caught his attention.
The boy named Aang was dressed in a style that felt familiar yet strange.
Oh. Right. Air Nomad.
Kahn finally remembered—Aang's clothes were clearly the traditional Air Nomad attire from the textbooks he'd studied. No wonder he hadn't recalled it immediately.
But… hadn't the Air Nomads perished a hundred years ago?
While Kahn wrestled with this thought, the trio immediately tensed up after hearing him admit he was a Firebender.
Sokka reacted first—snatching out his boomerang with dramatic suspicion:
"Katara! Get away from this guy! He might use Firebending!"
Katara stepped back instantly, hand on her water pouch, ready to bend.
Aang gripped his glider-staff, entering a defensive stance as well.
Judging by their reactions…
Yeah. The Fire Nation in this parallel world was definitely invading too.
Because of the Fire Nation's aggression, Firebenders were naturally unwelcome anywhere outside their borders.
Kahn had taken great care to disguise himself to avoid this exact situation—only to accidentally reveal it in a moment of frustration.
"To be clear, I am a Firebender, but I'm not a soldier. And I don't intend to harm any of you."
Remaining seated cross-legged, Kahn kept his tone calm and soft.
But Sokka wasn't having it.
"Oh really? A Firebender wearing non-Fire Nation clothes? Yeah, right. You look more like some sneaky Fire Nation spy!"
"My disguise was specifically to avoid reactions like this. If I were a spy, why would I expose myself?"
"That's because—!"
Sokka froze mid-sentence, unable to come up with anything.
Aang hesitated as he looked into Kahn's eyes—seeing sincerity more than deceit.
"Guys… I know he's suspicious, but I don't think he's a bad person."
Kahn smiled. "Thanks for understanding."
With Aang speaking up, Katara's stance softened. She nodded.
"I don't think Kahn is a bad person either. And the Great Banyan Tree did summon him."
Xiu'er added confidently.
"That's right. The Great Banyan Tree would never summon someone evil."
Sokka threw his hands in the air.
"Ugh! Damn the Great Banyan Tree! He's still a Firebender!"
Katara shot back immediately.
"Master Jeong Jeong is a Firebender too—is he a bad person?"
"You—! I—! Whatever! I'm done! It's either him or me here. Not both!"
Unable to win the argument, Sokka stomped off dramatically.
Katara sighed and turned to Kahn.
"I'm sorry. Our family… experienced things because of the Fire Nation army."
"It's alright. I understand."
Now that the misunderstanding was easing, Kahn stood and glanced toward Sokka.
"He's walking pretty far. Shouldn't you go talk to him?"
Katara waved it off.
"Don't worry. He always comes back."
"…Alright then."
Aang and Katara relaxed even more.
Kahn's gentle temperament—and yes, his ridiculously good looks—made it hard to imagine him as some Fire Nation villain.
Kahn shifted the subject.
"Aang… I wanted to ask earlier. Are you an Air Nomad?"
Aang nodded.
"Yes. And… I'm the Avatar."
Kahn blinked.
"Avatar what?"
Had he heard wrong?
"You said you're the Avatar? As in… the Avatar?"
Aang raised both hands calmly—air swirling in one palm while a stream of water floated from Katara's pouch into the other.
"I think that's the one you mean."
Kahn watched him wield two elements effortlessly.
Well… there was no denying it.
The protagonist had arrived.
Shock aside, a thousand questions rose in Kahn's mind:
How did the Avatar survive in this world?
Were the Air Nomads destroyed here too?
What was the current state of the war?
And since this world's timeline was a year ahead of his original world, maybe the Avatar could help him understand what might happen in his world's future.
But first things first:
Where the hell did this Avatar come from?
While Kahn contemplated, Katara seemed to have a sudden thought. She hesitated, then spoke.
"I… think I have a guess."
Aang blinked. "A guess?"
Katara pointed gently at Kahn.
"Do you think it's possible that the Great Banyan Tree summoned Kahn to us… to have him teach Aang Firebending?"
"Ah?" Aang's jaw nearly dropped.
"But what I need right now is an Earthbending teacher! Why would it summon a Firebender? Shouldn't it send an Earthbender?"
Katara crossed her arms.
"Maybe because the Earth Kingdom isn't lacking strong Earthbenders? King Bumi can't teach you himself, but finding an Earthbending teacher shouldn't be hard."
"But the only person who can teach you Firebending is Master Jeong Jeong, right? And we all know how that went…"
Aang visibly wilted as memories of accidentally burning Katara resurfaced.
Katara continued gently.
"Maybe the Great Banyan Tree sensed your troubles… and brought you someone more suitable."
Aang looked genuinely moved.
Katara turned to Kahn.
"Kahn, what do you think? Did the Great Banyan Tree tell you anything?"
Kahn had originally wanted to dismiss the idea outright.
Would the Avatar really matter enough for the Great Banyan Tree to drag someone across parallel worlds… just to become his Firebending instructor?
But on second thought…
Hell. Maybe it was possible.
And besides—Kahn did want to travel with them for now. Katara had basically handed him the perfect excuse.
So Kahn nodded.
"Actually… my memories after being summoned are a bit muddled. But hearing what you said, Katara… I think that might really be the case."
He shrugged lightly.
"In any case, when it comes to Firebending, I'm very confident in my skill."
