After Kahn joined the group, Aang and the others quickly found the missing Appa and Momo, officially completing the Avatar Team once again.
Appa was a Sky Bison—huge, fluffy, with a pair of heavy horns, six sturdy legs, and a broad beaver-like tail. His thick fur and the bold arrow marking on his head made him resemble Aang, giving him a harmless and dependable charm.
He was Aang's mount, companion, and family. More importantly, he could fly.
According to ancient legend, after the Lion Turtle granted the Air Nomads the ability to control air, the first generation of Airbenders learned Airbending from the Sky Bison themselves.
Because of this, Air Nomads and Sky Bison had lived alongside one another for thousands of years.
Momo, on the other hand, was a Winged Lemur—large ears, gliding membranes like a flying squirrel, and an energy that made him look perpetually ready to steal snacks.
According to old records, the species was supposed to be extinct.
Kahn clearly remembered reading a book about the creatures of this world.
Back then, he'd sworn that if he ever got the chance, he would tame the coolest, strongest magical beast he could find and make it his mount.
Later, of course… he found something better.
Thinking about that, he suddenly missed East, South, West, and North. Noisy, chaotic, talkative… but full of life.
Would they be panicking if they suddenly realized he'd vanished?
He sighed softly.
Aang had just finished introducing Kahn to Appa. Seeing the new member sighing, Aang looked confused.
Appa tilted his massive head, then gently nudged Kahn with it—an act of comfort.
Kahn couldn't help feeling amused and touched at the same time. Being comforted by a giant animal was both ridiculous and strangely warm.
He rubbed Appa's head and smiled.
"Thanks for the comfort, Appa."
He had to admit—fluffy creatures really were therapeutic.
"Amazing," Aang said, walking over with a handful of hay. "Appa rarely gets this close to people he just met. Looks like you two get along really well."
Kahn helped him feed Appa, shrugging lightly.
"I'm actually pretty popular with animals."
Well… Spiritbending definitely helped.
Not far away, Sokka stomped out of the brush with an armful of firewood, still muttering:
"Yeah, great idea—just let a Fire Nation guy join us. Maybe he'll roast us in our sleep!"
Katara, cleaning ingredients with the local Foggy Swamp Tribe members, sighed.
"Sokka, can you stop complaining for one second and actually finish what you're doing?"
"Complaining? This is critical analysis! And maybe you're just blinded by his handsome face!"
"You—!"
Ignoring his sister's outrage, Sokka dumped the firewood on the ground and started to prepare the fire.
Before he could finish a thought, Kahn walked over.
"Need help?"
"No, I can—!"
But before Sokka finished, Kahn casually flicked his hand. The firewood burst into clean, controlled flames.
Much easier than rubbing sticks together.
"Since we're a team," Kahn said, "I can handle fire-starting from now on. I'm good at it."
Katara leaned toward Sokka with a smirk.
"See? Now you have one less thing to worry about."
"…Okay, yeah, that's… actually kinda nice," Sokka admitted, examining the perfectly lit fire.
But then he snapped around, pointed two fingers at his eyes, then at Kahn.
"But don't think these tiny favors will buy me off! I'm watching you. Constantly."
He spun around dramatically—then tripped over a root and face-planted.
Katara covered her face in embarrassment.
"Sorry, Kahn. He's… always like this."
"It's fine," Kahn chuckled. "Honestly, he's pretty entertaining."
He added, "I know someone with a much worse personality. If she hates someone, she'll make their life hell until they disappear from her sight. She'd never just sulk like Sokka."
"A-Ahaha… that sounds a bit extreme," Katara said, laughing uneasily. The girl Kahn described sounded dangerous.
But as Kahn spoke, a faint, involuntary smile curled at his lips.
"Actually, she used to be even more extreme. She's better now. Still insane sometimes… but that's just who she is—"
He stopped mid-sentence. Something had crossed his mind.
His expression tightened, complex and distant. A heartbeat later, he shook it off and smiled again.
"Anyway, Katara—weren't you preparing the food?"
"Oh! Right!" She hurried back, though her thoughts lingered on Kahn.
That brief expression… it said he had stories he wasn't telling yet.
After a busy hour, everyone gathered around the Swamp Tribe's bonfire.
Their lifestyle was primitive, but their food—minus the insects—was surprisingly good.
Katara and Sokka discussed differences between their Water Tribes, while Kahn exchanged words with locals before turning to speak with Aang.
And quickly, he learned a lot.
Aang was technically twelve—but really from a hundred years ago.
A century earlier, he'd run away from the Air Temple and gotten caught in a massive storm.
He fell into the ocean, froze inside an iceberg, and slept for a hundred years until Katara and Sokka freed him.
Because of that, he had escaped the Fire Nation's genocide of the Air Nomads.
Now, Aang's mission was to defeat Fire Lord Ozai and restore balance before summer ended.
First, though, he had to master Waterbending, Earthbending, and Firebending.
"Ozai is still Fire Lord, huh…"
Kahn tapped his fingers against his cup, thoughtful.
So this was the major difference between his original world and this one.
Where he came from, Ozai had already been taken down by Azula—about a year ago. But here, everything was still on the original track.
Which meant one thing:
The reason for the divergence… was most likely him.
This world—the one without him—was the true, original timeline. The world he came from? That was the parallel branch.
Which made him… the possible root cause of the split.
He exhaled slowly. Complicated, but not surprising.
But what mattered most right now wasn't timelines or causality.
It was Azula.
And what her situation was in this world.
