The next day, after saying goodbye to the Foggy Swamp Tribe, Kahn, Aang, Katara, and Sokka rode Appa out of the swamp and continued deeper into the Earth Kingdom.
Even though Appa was a powerful and mystical creature, he was still a physical being—not a divine spirit like Four Directions.
His flying speed wasn't anything unbelievable, but the steady, rhythmic movement made the ride feel strangely comforting to Kahn.
Aang sat on Appa's large head to steer, while Kahn, Katara, and Sokka rode on the saddle behind him. Katara took the chance to explain their next destination.
"Aang needs to master the four elements in the cycle of Air, Water, Earth, and Fire. We already learned Waterbending at the Northern Water Tribe. Now we need to find him an Earthbending teacher."
Kahn raised an eyebrow.
"If you need an Earthbending master, why not go to Omashu? King Bumi is one of the greatest Earthbenders alive."
Katara sighed.
"We already went. Omashu has been captured by the Fire Nation. King Bumi was taken prisoner."
"King Bumi was captured?!" Kahn sat up abruptly.
He hadn't spent long with Bumi, but with Bumi's terrifying Earthbending skill, Kahn couldn't imagine anyone who could capture him—unless Bumi chose to stay.
Sure enough, Sokka, who had been pretending not to listen, finally snapped.
"That old man could totally Earthbend, but he just let himself get captured! I swear I don't understand him at all."
Aang looked confused as well, but quickly defended him.
"I don't get it either, but Bumi must have his own reasons. He always does."
Kahn finally realized that Aang and Bumi had been childhood friends.
Aang still looked twelve, while Bumi had aged into an old man. It was a strange and sad contrast.
Katara continued, "Anyway, now we need to find Aang a different Earthbending teacher."
Kahn nodded—but after a few minutes, he suddenly spoke again.
"By the way, something's been bothering me. You said Aang has to learn in the order of Air, Water, Earth, then Fire. Why? Who decided that?"
Aang blinked. "What do you mean 'why'? That's just… the order."
"Is it," Kahn said, "or is it just something someone told you?"
Aang thought hard—and slowly froze.
The only person who had actually told him about the "proper order" was… Jeong Jeong.
Neither Avatar Roku nor King Bumi had ever mentioned any required sequence.
Katara noticed Kahn's expression shift when he heard Jeong Jeong's name.
"Kahn? Do you know Jeong Jeong?"
"Hmm… yeah, in a way." He brushed it off. "But what I'm saying is: this idea that the Avatar must follow a fixed order? It might be wrong."
"What?!" Aang and Katara shouted at the same time.
Sokka scoffed.
"Oh great. New guy is claiming that old master was wrong."
"Maybe listen to me before judging?" Kahn replied calmly.
"As a Firebender, I grew up learning Firebending. I've never heard of any rule about needing to learn other elements in a specific sequence. Same for Katara—Waterbenders don't have to learn Fire before Earth or anything like that."
He pointed at Aang.
"So why should you, the Avatar—who's meant to master all four—be forced into a rigid order? What's the point of the cycle?"
Aang and Katara fell silent. They had never questioned it before.
Katara eventually offered, "Maybe… it's about difficulty? Learning in that order is easier?"
Aang added, "Or maybe it's something about the nature of the elements? Like Air, Water, Earth, Fire—how they connect?"
Kahn smiled.
"You're both right. And that's exactly why I think the order might be wrong."
He raised his hand, and a thin stream of flame drew the symbols of the four elements in the air, forming a perfect circle.
The flames were so gentle and steady that Katara and Aang stared in amazement—so unlike the rough, violent Firebending used by Fire Nation soldiers.
Kahn continued.
"In the cycle, adjacent elements are compatible. Opposing elements are difficult for each other."
He looked at Aang.
"You already learned Waterbending. Was it difficult?"
Aang shook his head. "Not at all. It felt natural."
Katara nodded with a sigh.
"Too natural. He learned faster than I did—he just can't sit still."
They exchanged a smile at the memory.
Kahn chuckled.
"Restlessness. Exactly the common trait between Air and Fire."
Then Aang suddenly froze, realization dawning.
"You're saying… because Air and Water are compatible, it was easier for me? So Earth—"
"Exactly." Kahn nodded. "Earth is Air's opposite. It's the hardest for you. So forcing you to learn Earth now, in the middle, makes no sense."
He pointed to the symbols.
"The sensible order for the Avatar should be:
Learn an element adjacent to your current one → then the next adjacent → save your opposite for last."
He looked at Aang directly.
"If you master stability through Waterbending, and explosiveness through Firebending, then learning Earthbending at the end will come naturally."
Katara and Aang looked at each other, stunned.
"It… does make sense," Katara admitted.
"Actually, it makes a lot of sense," Aang agreed quietly.
More importantly, the way Kahn explained things—the theory, the structure—felt nothing like a boy their age. It felt like listening to a teacher.
Katara stared at him curiously.
"Kahn, why do you know so much? You're the same age as us."
Kahn sighed.
"Probably because I have a good teacher… and was a terrible student."
