Although Kahn's explanation left Aang and the others a bit confused, one thing was clear: since they already had the strength to defeat Ozai, the group's previously tense schedule could finally loosen up.
That meant Aang could learn Earthbending at a more natural pace while they continued toward Ba Sing Se.
However, Aang didn't feel relaxed at all. Not only did he have to learn three different types of Earthbending simultaneously, but Kahn was also giving him extra foundational Spiritbending practice.
His days were so packed he barely had room to breathe.
While Aang trained, Kahn would observe Toph's Earthbending lessons.
He learned a lot, but he also couldn't help marveling at how ridiculously talented Aang's team really was.
Aang wasn't just the Avatar—he was a prodigy who had invented his own Airbending techniques and reached the level of Master at age twelve.
Katara, the lone Waterbender of the Southern Water Tribe, had never trained before meeting Aang.
Yet after just a few days of instruction with Master Pakku of the Northern Water Tribe, she reached a level where even Pakku referred to her as a master.
Toph's talent was even more outrageous.
She wasn't taught Earthbending by anyone—instead, when she got lost as a child, she encountered Badgermoles and learned the true essence of Earthbending directly from them, creating her own style.
There was only one word for it: monstrous.
Kahn was especially fascinated by Toph's self-taught Earthbending.
He never missed any of her lessons with Aang, and he even initiated discussions with her. His intense focus made Aang's scalp tingle.
Am I the Avatar, or are you the Avatar? Am I the one who needs bending lessons, or are you?
Aang fell into a mild existential crisis.
Toph, on the other hand, welcomed Kahn's interest. His personality made him easy to talk to, and his unusual ideas sparked her curiosity—like today.
"Metalbending? Really?" Toph asked, suspicious.
Kahn had just proposed that an Earthbender might be able to manipulate metal.
It was a wild claim. The reason metal tools existed in the first place was because Earthbenders couldn't bend them.
His theory basically flipped Earth Kingdom common sense on its head.
"Why not?" Kahn replied confidently.
"Metal comes from the earth—it's literally refined from it. Why wouldn't Earthbending affect it?
"Besides, in the theory of the four elements, all things in the world belong to one whole. Metal should still fall under the earth element."
Scientifically, metal and soil were different things. But this was a world based on metaphysical energy.
From that perspective, Metalbending felt not only possible, but natural.
"…You make a good point," Toph admitted, though she still hesitated. "But if that were true, how come no Earthbender has ever done it?"
Kahn thought for a moment.
"A few guesses:
First, the difficulty is extremely high—it'd take insane talent.
Second, people limit themselves. If you believe you can't do something, then you won't."
"Sounds like spiritual mumbo-jumbo, but I get what you're saying," Toph muttered thoughtfully.
Kahn shrugged. "Anyway, I'm convinced Metalbending exists. And if anyone can do it, it's you. How to actually pull it off, though—that's on you."
"If you really develop Metalbending, 'Strongest Earthbender Alive' will be an unshakeable title."
From his own comparisons, Toph still lagged behind King Bumi in raw power.
But if she created Metalbending? Then Toph would undoubtedly surpass him.
"Strongest Earthbender…" Toph repeated, eyes glimmering.
"Then let's try it!"
Nearby, Aang rubbed his temple. "Uh… if Metalbending becomes a thing, I don't need to learn it, right?"
Toph folded her arms. "You'd better focus on your basic Earthbending first!"
Pushed by curiosity and ambition, Toph immediately began experimenting. She took a copper coin and tried to manipulate it.
Metalbending should've been a long, difficult breakthrough. At least, that's what Kahn thought—
"I DID IT!"
Toph practically exploded with excitement. The copper coin in her hand squashed into a ball, then flattened, then reshaped again like soft clay.
Hands on her hips, she proclaimed proudly:
"From today on, call me the Strongest Earthbender!"
"How did you even do that?" Kahn asked, stunned. He expected Metalbending to exist, but not to be mastered in minutes.
Toph explained eagerly.
She first tried to bend the metal directly—it didn't budge.
But then she remembered what Katara said about the Swamp Waterbenders, who controlled plants by bending the water inside them.
Inspired, Toph sensed the metal… and detected traces of earth inside it.
Impurities.
"By controlling the earth inside the metal, I can bend the whole thing!"
Kahn's face twitched.
That was not the metaphysical explanation he expected.
He thought Metalbending would be about "metal as part of the earth element." But Toph was manipulating impurities.
This is too scientific! What the hell? Make up your mind, world—are you metaphysical or scientific?
Suddenly—
"Hey! Everyone! Look down there—what is that?!" Sokka yelled.
They all looked and froze.
Fire Nation machinery—massive, metallic, towering.
The colossal steel cylinder with a gigantic drill at its head was unmistakable.
"Fire Nation machines! Why are they so huge?!"
"Uh… I think I know what that is…" Kahn muttered, eye twitching.
In his original world, Azula mentioned the Fire Nation was developing a giant drill meant to breach Ba Sing Se's outer wall.
It wasn't supposed to be completed yet.
But here? It was done.
And it looked exactly like—
"Good lord… they actually made a full-on tunnel-boring machine," Kahn groaned.
"Kahn, you know what it is?" Aang asked.
Kahn explained: its purpose was to smash through Ba Sing Se's defenses. Mid-sentence, he suddenly grinned and turned to Toph.
"Speaking of which… isn't this the perfect moment for Metalbending's first big performance?"
Toph's expression lit up like fireworks.
"Just what I was hoping for!" she said, cracking her knuckles.
Kahn looked down at the enormous drill with a wicked smile.
"Alright then. Let's go show them the strength of the Strongest Earthbender."
