Lauren hung up the phone with Josephine, her mind reeling. Rachel had been taken by Jeffrey.
No one knew where she was, or when or if, she'd be back. But according to Josephine, the fact Rachel had managed to call at all meant she was probably okay… for now.
"We'll just have to wait," Josephine had said, her voice strained with worry. "I'll try to find out where Jeffrey took her. And don't stress about your case, Sister Lauren. If Rachel isn't back in a week, I'll get Kieran to find you another lawyer."
"Thank you," Lauren had replied, her gratitude feeling small and heavy. "Really, thank you so much."
"It's nothing! As long as you and Liam are okay, that's all that matters."
That afternoon, as Lauren walked to the kindergarten, her thoughts were still tangled up in Rachel's mess.
