Kakashi gathered every Avenger including the X-Men.
"Can't we get a break?" Tony groaned as he saw everyone gathering for a meeting that Kakashi had called for. He slumped in his chair as he knew that the only time he called everyone was an emergency where they needed all hands on deck.
He had been hoping for some quiet time but clearly that was not happening.
"It is a very serious situation, Tony," Kakashi said. He stood straight with his usual calm presence. He waited until everyone was settled before continuing. "Shield has been infiltrated by another organisation. A centuries old terrorist organisation has managed to infiltrate it."
"The world's primary security force against the biggest threats that Earth is going to face is compromised? Just what we needed," Banner said with a sigh. The scientist rubbed his forehead, already imagining the complications this would bring. He knew how dangerous it was when the people who were supposed to protect the world were actually working against it.
"So what are we facing?" Natasha asked. She leaned forward with sharp focus, her training making her ready for bad news.
"Hydra," Kakashi said. The single word made Cap and Tony's eyes widened in shock. Cap because he himself had fought Hydra during World War Two and even knew that their leader Red Skull was dead.
He could not believe that the organisation that he fought for most of his life not buried in ice was still alive. He had thought that the organisation had ended after the war but the name brought back memories... bad memories.
The super soldier clenched his shield tighter as old battles flashed in his mind. Tony on the other hand had not faced Hydra but he had known about them from his father who had a major contribution against them during the war. He looked serious for once, knowing the kind of damage such a group could cause after preparing for so many years.
Kakashi seeing their reaction said, "Yes the organisation is alive and from what Mystique has gathered the organisation is stronger than ever with very grand plans." He explained how Mystique had risked her life to infiltrate the secret academy and bring back this information.
The team listened carefully as he described the brainwashing, the secret projects, and the deep roots Hydra had inside SHIELD. Everyone's faces grew more concerned with each detail.
Cap muttered shocked, "How?! Fury said that the war was over and Hydra had been disbanded completely."
The news hit Steve particularly hard. He had given so much during the war to stop these people, and now it seemed their influence had never truly gone away. The idea that the organisation had survived and grown inside SHIELD made him angry and disappointed at the same time.
"Apparently SHIELD had hired past Hydra scientists and agents who had surrendered seeing their value. In truth they were just waiting for the right time as they regained their strength," Kakashi explained.
He gave more details about how the infiltration had happened quietly over many years. Hydra had played the long game, hiding in plain sight while building their power.
Cap said muttering angrily, "They should have known that you cannot just recruit Hydra soldiers. They fucking even have it in their organisation's motto. Cut off one head, two more shall take its place." His voice showed clear frustration.
Tony asked, "So what are we going to do about it?"
Kakashi said, "I would need your and Jarvis help in getting intel about all the security council members in SHIELD as well as any other higher ups in SHIELD. We need to track who is Hydra and who is not. My hounds are already keeping an eye on the people that are confirmed to be Hydra operatives."
"I am on it," Tony said.
"What I am sure is several of the higher ups in SHIELD are working for Hydra," Kakashi said. He warned the team that the corruption went high up, which meant they had to be very careful with who they trusted inside the organisation.
"They are tarnishing Peggy's legacy and I would not let them do it," Cap said.
"At least our opponents are humans this time," Clint said. "I am tired of facing alien beings rather than normal humans." The archer tried to find a small positive in the situation.
"I would not be sure of that. They have super soldiers, cyborgs and likely individuals with superpowers through various experiments and we do not have much on their level of technology either. It might be very advanced," Kakashi said.
He reminded the team that Hydra's experiments had created dangerous enhanced people, making them just as threatening as any alien force.
"What about the rest of us?" Cap asked. He wanted to know how the full team would be involved in taking down this hidden enemy.
"We will start targeting Hydra bases and Hydra personnel one by one. We will let them know that we know of their existence and that is when they would start making big mistakes giving us more clues about their plans," Kakashi said.
"But would that not go against our duty of protecting Earth from world ending threats like aliens or some super powered magical stone?" Banner asked since they were not supposed to take actions that fell in the preview of governments, military and police.
"I would say that humans are the most dangerous threat to ending our world and with what these people are doing, I would wager their aim is just that," Kakashi said and to that no one in the room could disagree.
