NIGHTFALL: THE SILENT BLADE
BOOK ONE: THE EMERALD DYNASTY
CHAPTER TWO: THE PRINCE OF THE EMERALD PALACE
The late afternoon sun hung high over the Emerald Empire, casting a warm amber glaze across the high marble parapets of the Emerald Palace.
Following his grueling martial training in the courtyard, Prince Rain stood in the center of his personal quartering suite. Sweat still glistened along his forehead, running past the small pale scar above his right eyebrow. His chest rose and fell in a steady, measured cadence. He had shed his heavy formal tunic, remaining in a light linen training undershirt, dark trousers, and his high leather boots.
On the table before him rested a heavy wooden tray holding two items: a raw, unrefined emerald crystal matrix about the size of a human palm, and a small, delicate iron stylus used for delicate carving.
"Focus is not a grip, Rain," Master Vance's calm, measured voice echoed from the doorway of the chamber. The grand scholar stepped into the room, his long navy-blue scholar's robes sweeping quietly over the polished stone floor. "A grip can be broken by superior force. Focus is an anchor. You must anchor your consciousness inside the lattice of the crystal before you attempt to trace the circuit."
Rain looked up, wiping his brow with the back of his hand. "Every time I begin the second rune, the crystal rejects the energy flow, Master Vance. It feels like trying to push water up a waterfall."
"That is because you are treating the crystal as a vessel to be filled," Vance explained, stepping alongside the table and gesturing to the raw stone. "The crystal is not an empty cup. It is a living pathway. You do not force water up the waterfall; you become the river channel."
Rain took a slow, deep breath. He closed his eyes for a long moment, recalling the exact sensation from his morning sword training with Emperor Orion—the intake of atmospheric energy through the soles of his feet, holding the compression in his lower core, and allowing the energy to travel through his body without physical tension.
He reached out, his small light-brown fingers wrapping gently around the cold, rough edges of the raw emerald crystal.
He picked up the iron stylus with his right hand.
Instead of driving the point into the stone with physical pressure, Rain focused on the glowing green veins beneath his own skin. He channeled a micro-current of emerald energy down his fingers, through the conductive iron of the stylus, and into the tip.
*Breathe in. Accept the stone.*
The moment the stylus touched the raw crystal surface, a soft green light flared. The hard stone seemed to yield under the tip like softened wax. Rain moved his hand with slow, deliberate precision, tracing the intricate geometric curve of the **Seal of Resonance**—the foundational rune used to stabilize crystalline energy networks across the empire.
His hand did not shake. The energy flowing from his fingertips matched the natural vibrational frequency of the crystal.
*First line: absolute stability.*
*Second curve: kinetic alignment.*
*Final anchor: the core pulse.*
With a faint, rhythmic *ping*, the raw crystal lit up from within. The glowing green light did not flicker or burst as it had during his morning attempt; it settled into a steady, brilliant hum, illuminating the entire table with a clean jade radiance.
Rain lifted the stylus, taking a steady breath out as he let the remaining energy in his veins dissipate.
"Impeccable," Vance said, a rare, genuine smile touching his thin lips as he leaned down to inspect the carved stone. "The line integration is ninety-eight percent pure. Most young princes do not master the Seal of Resonance until their twelfth year. Your control over internal energy pathways is developing far faster than your father's did at your age."
"It felt different this time," Rain said, looking down at his glowing creation with quiet satisfaction. "I stopped trying to force the blade into the stone. I just let the energy clear the path first."
Before Vance could respond, the heavy wooden doors of the suite burst open with a loud *clack*.
"Rain! Look!"
Princess Elara came skidding across the slick marble floor, her soft leather shoes squeaking to an abrupt stop right beside the table. In her small hands, she held a delicate, translucent creature—a baby crystal stag no larger than a house cat. The small creature had soft, shimmering silver fur, small budding antlers made of clear emerald glass, and bright, curious violet eyes.
"Elara," Vance warned with a heavy sigh, though his tone held no real bite. "We discussed protocol regarding running in the royal living quarters."
"I know, Master Vance! But the head gardener let me hold one!" Elara bubbled over with excitement, holding the tiny stag up so Rain could see it. "Look, Rain! Its antlers are already glowing! Father said if I look after it, I can name it!"
Rain smiled softly, leaning over to gently touch the small creature's crystal antlers. The baby stag let out a soft, musical chirping sound, pressing its head against Rain's warm fingers. The small green light within its antlers pulsed in perfect harmony with the energy Rain had just carved into his crystal matrix.
"What are you going to name it?" Rain asked.
"Glimmer," Elara declared proudly, puffing out her chest. "Because when it runs through the shade, it looks like a falling star."
Rain chuckled, nodding in agreement. "It's a good name."
The light mood in the room was suddenly cut short by the distant, rhythmic chime of the central palace bells. Three heavy, resonant strikes echoed through the stone walls, reverberating across the high ceilings of the estate.
Vance's expression hardened instantly. The gentle warmth in his eyes vanished, replaced by the sharp alertness of a high council advisor.
"The Evening Assembly," Vance murmured, straightening his robes. "Your parents are opening the High Chamber early today."
Rain looked toward the window. The sun was still well above the horizon. The Evening Assembly was never called until dusk, when the floating mountains shifted into their nocturnal glowing phase.
"Is something wrong, Master Vance?" Rain asked, his emerald eyes tightening with immediate awareness.
"Nothing for you to worry about, young prince," Vance said smoothly, though he immediately tucked his ledger securely under his arm. "The Emperor merely has territorial reports to review with the provincial lords. Put on your formal tunic, Rain. You and Princess Elara are expected at the head balcony."
As Vance turned and swiftly departed the room, Rain stood still in the glowing light of his newly carved crystal. He looked out the large arched window toward the eastern sky.
Far in the distance, beyond the shimmering floating islands and the lush green canopy of the ancient forests, a thin, faint line of dark mist hung motionless against the clear sky—so faint that anyone else might have dismissed it as a passing cloud.
Rain touched the small pale scar above his eyebrow, feeling an odd, cold prickle run down his spine. The pulse of the earth beneath his feet felt steady, yet for the first time in his nine years of life, the quiet air of Elarion felt strangely heavy.
