Because Pain had withdrawn the chakra from the other Five Paths, Naruto and the others had temporarily halted their battle.
The six newly recruited Akatsuki jonin had already been subdued by Yakumo and Sasuke.
"Amazing…" Naruto couldn't help but gasp as he stared at the wooden golem.
Sasuke, meanwhile, let his Susanoo dissipate.
He had originally been planning to summon Susanoo to resist the pull of Planetary Devastation and try to destroy it with brute force.
Hinata remained silent, her Byakugan fixed on Kitazawa standing atop the wooden golem's head.
Ninja Art: Mind Transmission Technique!
Kitazawa immediately reached out to Nagato.
Banshō Tenshin!
Pain raised his hand.
A powerful gravitational force locked onto Kitazawa.
Kitazawa deliberately acted as if he were experiencing Banshō Ten'in for the first time. Pretending to be caught off guard, his body was yanked up into the air.
The closer he drew to the planetary devastation's core, the stronger the pull became.
In that instant, Kitazawa felt an overwhelming suction, his entire body flung toward the growing mass of rock and debris.
After absorbing countless fragments, the once small sphere had already swelled into a giant boulder in the sky.
"Hokage-sama?!" Fugaku and the others' expressions changed drastically at the sight.
Kitazawa forcibly twisted his body and managed to plant his feet on the surface of the planetary devastation sphere.
But the immense gravitational pull bent his posture, making him look as if he could be torn away at any moment.
Just then, his brow lifted slightly.
Space distorted behind him, and Uchiha Obito emerged.
War fan in his left hand, he swung his right arm at Kitazawa.
Wood Style: Impalement Technique!
The skin on Obito's right arm bulged, and sharp wooden spikes burst from his flesh.
Kitazawa had kept his Byakugan activated the entire time.
The moment Obito appeared, he had already seen him.
He had two choices.
The first was to counterattack immediately.
Obito had to materialize to land a strike; in that instant, he could be hit.
The second was to use this chance to plant a Flying Thunder God mark on him.
Although Obito already carried Minato Namikaze's Flying Thunder God Mark, Minato only had a sliver of chakra left, and his sensing range was limited.
If Kitazawa left his own mark, Obito's presence could be tracked anywhere in the ninja world.
Unless Obito became the Ten-Tails Jinchuriki, he would have no way to erase the Flying Thunder God Mark.
Kitazawa chose the second option without hesitation.
Obito possessed Izanagi—one eye would let him rewrite reality for ten minutes.
There was no way to kill him twice in such a short span.
On top of that, Nagato still needed to continue attacking to maintain their act.
With a dull thud, Kitazawa caught Obito's wrist.
The sharpened wooden spikes drove straight through his palm, blood streaming down his hand.
Kitazawa ignored the pain and drove his left fist straight into Obito.
Obito reacted instantly, bringing up his Uchiha war fan to block the punch.
The impact was immense. The force smashed into the fan, twisted, and scattered, erupting outward as a violent storm.
Obito didn't hesitate. His body warped and vanished as he slipped into Kamui.
He knew very well that this small storm alone could never hurt Kitazawa.
Kitazawa saw him disappear and didn't give chase.
He had already placed a Flying Thunder God mark on Obito.
Lowering his right hand, he glanced at it.
The wound that had been pierced through by the branches was already closing on its own.
With his current monstrous physique, even without releasing the Yin Seal, he could quickly recover from any non-fatal injury.
In the next instant, Kitazawa teleported out of the range of the forming Planetary Devastation.
He reappeared atop the head of the Wooden Golem.
"Sage Art: Wind Release: Rasenshuriken!"
Kitazawa raised his hand.
Senjutsu chakra surged, spiraling into a shuriken-shaped Rasengan.
Without a moment's hesitation, he hurled it straight at the planetary devastation.
A deafening boom tore through the sky.
The Planetary Devastation, not yet fully formed, shattered instantly under the impact of the Sage Art: Wind Release: Rasenshuriken.
A howling storm descended.
Streams of chakra burst apart like exploding fireworks.
Jiraiya and the others unconsciously held their breath.
Those falling chakra currents felt as if they carried a crushing weight, pressing down on them from above.
At that moment, the Wooden Golem lifted its massive arms, shielding everyone and blocking the aftermath of the explosion.
"Damn it!"
Obito rematerialized on the mountaintop, his voice cold.
"How is his reaction so fast?"
Black Zetsu's expression turned grim.
"It's like he has eyes on the back of his head," White Zetsu added.
They had no idea that Kitazawa had activated his Byakugan.
If they had known, Obito would never have tried to ambush him.
With the Byakugan's nearly 360-degree field of vision, unless there was an overwhelming difference in power, a sneak attack was doomed to fail.
"It seems our only option to defeat Kitazawa is to summon the Gedo Statue," Black Zetsu said at once, seeing that Planetary Devastation had failed.
As soon as it finished speaking, Nagato formed the seals and activated the Summoning Technique.
The Gedo statue erupted into existence with a thunderous crash.
Gamabunta and the other summoned beasts, locked in fierce combat a moment before, instinctively leapt back, putting distance between themselves and the new arrival.
"What is that…?"
Jiraiya's pupils contracted. The sinister, overwhelming aura of the Gedo statue made his scalp prickle.
No one had an answer.
Fugaku and the others were struck dumb.
Many of them had seen the Nine-Tails with their own eyes.
But compared to the Gedo statue, the Nine-Tails looked almost small.
"Is there really a summoned beast like this in the ninja world…?" Hiruzen muttered, eyes wide.
"Kitazawa is in danger. All of you stay here—I'll go support him!" Tsunade's heart pounded. Forcing down her anxiety, she spoke sharply.
"Lady Tsunade." Kurenai seized her wrist. "Believe in Kitazawa!"
"But—"
Tsunade had only managed a single word before she suddenly froze.
Hiruzen stopped as well, his breath catching.
A colossal thousand-armed buddha rose up, towering into the sky.
Its size was no less than that of the Gedo statue.
The two giants faced each other like opposing mountains.
For some reason, Hiruzen suddenly thought of the two statues at the Valley of the End.
Had Senju Hashirama and Uchiha Madara reappeared in this era?
"This is impossible…" Obito stared at the thousand-armed buddha, horror flickering in his eyes.
Black Zetsu and White Zetsu were just as stunned.
Especially Black Zetsu.
It had existed in the ninja world for a thousand years, constantly fanning the flames of conflict between the reincarnations of Indra and Ashura.
But aside from those two, all other shinobi had been mediocre in comparison—none even one ten-thousandth as strong.
What was going on with this Kitazawa who had suddenly appeared?
Black Zetsu's mind buzzed.
Could the Sage of Six Paths have had an illegitimate child—and Kitazawa was that child's Chakra reincarnation?
Otherwise, how could he explain someone possessing strength on par with the reincarnations of Indra and Ashura?
"Kitazawa-sensei is that strong?"
Sasuke's hands clenched unconsciously.
He had always known Kitazawa was powerful.
But he had never believed Kitazawa was much stronger than Naruto in Nine-Tails Chakra Mode.
Yet the moment that thousand-armed buddha statue appeared, his certainty faltered.
In front of that statue, his Susanoo felt like a mere child.
"As expected of Kitazawa-sensei!"
Naruto gave a thumbs up. "Someone that strong is the goal of youth!"
Hinata and Neji were too stunned to speak.
A deep rumble shook the air.
The Demonic Statue of the Outer Path hurled itself toward the thousand-armed buddha.
Sage Art: Wood Style—True Several Thousand Hands!
Kitazawa hadn't even used a complete Susanoo this time.
Even so, the Demonic Statue looked like it could collapse at any moment under the relentless blows of the thousand-armed buddha.
"Not good."
Black Zetsu's tone turned grave. "Nagato is going to lose."
"This is the demonic statue that devoured seven tailed beasts. How can it lose?"
Obito instinctively stepped back.
He stared at Kitazawa, a nameless dread rising in his chest.
With his current strength, if he faced Kitazawa head-on, it would be difficult to even scratch him.
"What should we do now?"
White Zetsu blurted out, "Kitazawa will definitely go after his Rinnegan next!"
"The Rinnegan cannot fall into Kitazawa's hands."
Black Zetsu spoke immediately. "We're withdrawing."
"Withdraw?" Obito asked, unwilling. "We're just giving up like this?"
"What else can we do if we don't give up?"
Black Zetsu shot back.
"..."
Obito fell silent.
He had already tried one sneak attack. Kitazawa would be on guard now; another attempt would have an even lower chance of success.
"Don't worry. I have a backup plan."
Black Zetsu took a deep breath, making up its mind.
Nagato's body was already frail. After this battle, it would be in even worse condition.
It would be difficult for him to continue using the Rinnegan properly.
In that case, it would be better to use his remains to revive Madara.
Otherwise, no one could defeat Kitazawa.
And once Nagato's Rinnegan was removed, there was no suitable successor.
Should they give it to Obito?
They could—but even with the Rinnegan, he would probably still be unable to defeat Kitazawa. It would all be for nothing.
"Hurry up."
Black Zetsu urged as the Gedo Statue began to fall.
With that, it sank into the ground.
Obito shot Kitazawa a resentful glare, then vanished from where he stood.
Kitazawa's eyes narrowed.
It wasn't Obito's look that caught his attention, but the disappearance of the Flying Thunder God mark.
Without holding back any longer, he used the Body Flicker to appear in front of Pain.
"I'll hold on to the Six Paths of Pain for you for now."
Finishing his words, he floored him with a single punch.
At the same time, Nagato—the true body—immediately coughed up blood.
Although the injury was partly an act, the chakra he'd spent was very real.
"Nagato, how are you?" Konan asked, panic in her voice.
"If Kitazawa isn't lying, Black Zetsu and Uchiha Madara will be here soon."
Nagato wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth.
"Kitazawa will rush over too," he said.
"Mhm." Konan's voice was low.
Nagato nodded. "Later, Black Zetsu and Madara will probably try to distract you. Just do as they say."
"I understand."
Konan stood. "To keep them from suspecting anything, I'll take you away myself."
The next instant, space distorted, and Obito stepped out of a swirling vortex.
At the same time, Zetsu rose from the ground.
"What are you doing?" Konan demanded immediately.
"We don't mean you any harm. Of course we want to help Nagato escape," Black Zetsu replied smoothly. "Kitazawa will catch up soon. You won't be able to get away if you insist on taking him like this."
Konan's face sank. Hesitation flickered in her eyes.
"I'll take Nagato," Black Zetsu said at once. "You and Madara stay behind to delay Kitazawa. Once I'm far enough away, Madara can use space–time ninjutsu to bring you out."
"I don't trust you," Konan snapped coldly.
"Our goals are the same. And now that the Eye of the Moon Plan has failed, we can't afford infighting!" Black Zetsu said, stressing every word.
"Time's running out," White Zetsu cut in. "If we don't leave now, none of us will get out!"
"Konan, listen to it," Nagato said after a brief silence.
"But…" Konan hesitated, then finally said, "Be careful."
"Don't worry, I'll protect him," Black Zetsu replied. It stepped closer. "Nagato, I'll attach myself to you first. That way, I can take you into the ground."
Nagato nodded.
Black Zetsu and White Zetsu's bodies liquefied, turning into two masses of black and white sludge that flowed into Nagato's body.
At once, Nagato's movements were seized, and his wheelchair-bound form sank into the earth.
He didn't know how much time had passed before his vision cleared again.
He was in a dimly lit cave.
"Where is this?" Nagato asked, looking around.
"You don't need to know." Black Zetsu's tone shifted the moment its objective was met. "Nagato, your mission is over."
"What do you mean?" Nagato instinctively tried to rise.
But black matter surged out, crawling over his arms and body. In the next second, he lost all control of himself.
Kitazawa was right!
But wasn't Uchiha Madara with Konan, holding Kitazawa off?
Then who was Black Zetsu trying to revive?
As the thought flashed through his mind, Nagato saw White Zetsu peel away from his body and spit out a corpse—its eye sockets empty.
"Uchiha Madara?" Nagato blurted.
He remembered Kitazawa saying that his Rinnegan had come from Uchiha Madara—and this corpse just happened to have no eyes.
"You're quite sharp," Black Zetsu's voice said.
Nagato realized with a jolt that his hands were forming hand seals on their own.
The pattern was one he knew all too well: The Rinne-Rebirth.
"You've outlived your usefulness as a pawn," Black Zetsu said calmly. "Sorry, but it's time for the real player to appear and clean up the board."
"So that's how it is." Nagato suddenly grew calm.
He lowered his head, looking at the black mass wrapped around his body.
Transfer Sealing activated.
The Five Elements Seal, Four Symbols Seal, Eight Trigrams Sealing Style, and Seal of Self-Retribution—four powerful sealing techniques—descended upon Black Zetsu at once.
The creature controlling Nagato's hands abruptly froze.
A heartbeat later, it realized what had happened. Its voice twisted with shock and fury. "You tricked me!"
The very next second, Kitazawa appeared in the cave.
Black Zetsu was utterly stunned.
Why would Nagato cooperate with Kitazawa?
And when did he learn the truth?
"Buy one, get one free? Are you really that generous?"
Kitazawa burst out laughing the moment he saw Madara's corpse.
His hesitation vanished. He immediately began hurling Sealing Techniques at Black Zetsu in a frantic barrage.
