The sound of the shattered tray still echoed in the hall long after the servant had fallen to her knees, muttering frantic apologies.
But I wasn't listening to her.
My eyes were still fixed on the door the boy had just walked through without permission.
The nerve of that boy.
No, not just nerve. His audacity and arrogance.
Every word he uttered reeked of quiet defiance against my rule and authority. It wasn't loud or reckless like the typical Alphas I'd crushed under my heel, it was controlled.
The way he looked me in the eye when he spoke, there was always something unreadable behind his gaze, like he was daring me to look deeper, knowing I wouldn't find what I was searching for.
Knowing that I wouldn't find answers to the thousand questions plaguing my soul about him and his survival.
And damn it all, he was right.
"Leave!!" I ordered, my voice cutting through the air.
