Watching the raging tide of public opinion across the internet, Nick Fury rubbed his aching temples. This kid really was playing with fire—each stunt bigger than the last.
"He's another unstable factor," Fury thought grimly.
Just then, Coulson entered from outside the room.
"Something to report?" Fury asked, seeing him come in.
Coulson concealed the shock in his eyes as he placed a stack of research reports on Fury's desk. "Director, the research results are out."
"Oh? The internal energy study I asked you to conduct?" Fury asked.
"That's right," Coulson replied, taking a deep breath. "And what we found is… astonishing."
He paused for a moment, then said solemnly, "The human body doesn't have meridians at all."
"Huh?" Fury froze for a second, instinctively sitting up straighter. "No meridians? Then how do people cultivate internal energy?"
Fury himself had practiced those techniques before—he knew the feeling of inner strength flowing through his body.
"I didn't put it precisely," Coulson said carefully. "Strictly speaking, before a person cultivates internal energy, there are no observable meridian-like organs in the body."
"It's not that people have meridians and thus can cultivate energy—rather, after practicing those techniques, the human body creates meridians."
Fury's expression grew serious. He straightened in his chair. "Explain in detail."
Coulson began slowly: "We ran experiments. Subjects who had never read 'Everyone Can Practice Internal Strength' showed no trace of any meridian structure inside their bodies."
"But once they started training, and we examined them later—meridians appeared, clear as day upon dissection."
"The knowledge in White Night's book acts almost like a virus—infecting everyone who practices it. Without realizing it, we may have already changed as a species."
Fury stared silently, at a loss for words. After a long breath, he asked, "Are you sure?"
"The research division has confirmed it repeatedly," Coulson said. "We used to wonder why only humans developed meridians while animals didn't. Now we know—it's because animals can't understand the concept of cultivation, so their bodies never generate the organ."
"Director, this is huge. It won't be long before other researchers out there discover the same thing."
"Let me think about it," Fury muttered, rubbing his forehead in frustration. He hadn't even dealt with the Hydra situation yet, and now White Night was causing another disaster.
In just a few days, billions of people around the world had practiced 'Everyone Can Practice Internal Strength.' Which meant that, unknowingly, every one of them had their physiology rewritten.
And no one had the faintest idea how this mysterious power worked. If those cultivation techniques contained a backdoor, people could die without ever realizing it.
Most troubling of all—did White Night know about this? And if he did, what was he planning?
After a long silence, Fury finally made a decision. "Add White Night to the Sentry Program's watchlist."
"Understood," Coulson said, nodding. As kind-hearted as he was, he had never fully approved of White Night's actions.
"By the way, how's the Sentry Program progressing?" Fury asked.
"The progress is remarkable," Coulson replied, his eyes lighting up. "With Dr. Reed's help, we've solved the long-standing issue of gene collapse when merging Sebastian Shaw's mutant DNA with the Sentry prototype."
"Once we've had time to cultivate the modified cells, the Sentries will be able to absorb energy."
"After that, with Dr. Reed's continued assistance, we plan to implant cells from the mutant known as Quicksilver. However, he mentioned that the genetic load from Darwin's and Mystique's cells has reached its limit—merging more will be extremely difficult."
Coulson's eyes gleamed with excitement.
He knew just how terrifying the Sentry Program's potential was—especially considering the abilities of Sebastian Shaw, the so-called Black King.
Fury sighed in awe. "Looks like Stryker's years of collecting mutant samples are finally paying off."
When Fury had inherited the Sentry Program, he'd seen the trove Stryker had accumulated after years of relentless pursuit of mutants—and had been stunned.
Wolverine, Sabretooth, Quicksilver, Mystique, the Black King, the White Queen, Darwin, Nightcrawler, Cyclops, Mastermind…
Each of those mutant cells alone represented a first-class threat—and Stryker had managed to gather them all. It was simply insane.
If they were all merged into one Sentry body… who could imagine the kind of monster that would create?
A being capable of wielding over a dozen top-tier mutant powers simultaneously—conquering the entire planet wouldn't even be far-fetched.
So why was I wasting time worrying about the Avengers before…? A whole army of Sentries would do just fine.
Listening to Coulson's report, Fury couldn't think of anything more terrifying than this.
In that moment, White Night's chaos suddenly felt trivial. Compared to this, White Night was nothing. Once the Sentries were complete, who could possibly stand against them?
Meanwhile, inside a factory, White Night—bare-chested—was taking a break between training sets. Beside him, Rogue pressed her hand to his arm, continuously drawing out his stamina.
As he felt his strength steadily drain away, White Night mused aloud, "Marie, do you think death is a result… or a state?"
"Huh? What did you say, Mr. White?" Marie looked up in surprise.
"From a biological standpoint, death means the body's functions have ceased and the brain has stopped thinking. But if death is merely a state, then could it be reversed through training?"
White Night's eyes narrowed thoughtfully. "If being injured makes my body stronger as it heals… then what about death? Could death itself be seen as an attack on my body and consciousness?"
"Or, to take it further—what about things like consciousness alteration, timeline erasure, or your absorption power? Do those count as attacks on me?"
"T-That… doesn't sound very scientific," Rogue said hesitantly, feeling that his theory was absurd.
"Not scientific?" White Night fell silent, deep in thought.
His endlessly evolving body already defied every law of physics. If he could surpass normal limits in every way, then perhaps even death—the ultimate fear of mortals—could be transcended.
Seeing the worry in her eyes, White Night smiled gently. "Relax. Until I'm absolutely certain I can revive myself, I won't take that kind of reckless risk."
"That's… good," Rogue murmured in relief, afraid he might do something crazy on a whim.
"Besides," White Night continued, glancing at the hydraulic press nearby, "this machine has reached its limit anyway. After tomorrow, we can shut this place down. But the operators will have to stay within the factory grounds for now."
As he spoke, he took out his phone, scrolled through his contacts, and dialed Professor X's number.
