Chapter 146 - Coulson, Ordered to Read! The Old Man's Call!

The movie ended.

Everyone gave the film high praise.

The S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel sat in the cinema, mulling it over for a moment. Nick Fury suddenly turned to look at Coulson.

"Director, do you have any orders?"

Coulson, as expected of Nick Fury's confidant, immediately realized something was up.

"Coulson, there's a mission that's perfect for you."

Nick Fury pondered for a moment before finally speaking.

"Director, I will give it my all."

Coulson felt a chill run down his spine as he replied in a serious tone.

In his opinion, that sentence sounded like someone saying, "I'll come back and marry you after I finish the mission," so he put on a self-sacrificing expression.

"You were the first to realize something was off with DC Comics."

Nick Fury said, "However, we've thoroughly reviewed all of DC Comics' data since its establishment, including Anton's files, and found nothing unusual. But after watching this movie, I realized we overlooked a key piece of information—the specific content of the works currently released by DC Comics!"

He paused, then continued, "Coulson, you have one week to watch these works, summarize them, and report the key points to me. Especially the relationship between Batman, Green Arrow, Cyborg, and this Superman. I believe that if Anton used these people as a reference when creating these works, then there must be something in common between the works and the characters."

"For example, Superman and Batman don't seem to get along very well…"

Natasha suddenly understood.

She thought of the post-credits scene from the movie, extracting key information.

Batman doesn't trust Superman!

Was Anton hinting at the relationship between Batman and Superman in reality?

Although Superman hadn't appeared yet, SHIELD couldn't let their guard down, given the recent alien attack and Superman's extraterrestrial background.

"This... I understand!"

Coulson's tense expression relaxed.

Reading books by order? Not bad! At least he didn't have to go on field missions, which was a good thing!

In a way, for Coulson, who was always busy running around, this assignment was like a vacation.

Tony left the cinema, scoffing at the Superman film.

Although Man of Steel lacked depth, he didn't deny that it was of excellent quality for a popcorn movie.

The main issue was that the content contradicted science.

Even with the same suspicions as the SHIELD team, Tony couldn't accept the fact that Superman existed in this world.

Eddie, who walked out of the cinema at the same time, didn't have as many thoughts swirling in his head as the others.

He was the most certain that Superman would appear.

"Clark Kent! Kryptonian!"

Eddie pondered for a moment, then suddenly realized something.

"No wonder Anton knew the mind-transfer device was from outer space, and that the alien Ron-gar had always been eyeing Earth! Superman must have told him!"

Eddie filled in the blanks himself, finally straightening out the tangled threads in his mind.

"The Justice League!"

He thought happily, his heart swelling with pride. What a thick thigh I've latched onto!

Beside him, April saw Eddie's face beaming with flattery and couldn't help but make a face of disgust.

A day later.

Anton sat in DC Comics, surprised to see Superman's fan value only increase by 1.3 million, from 6 million to 7.3 million.

This growth rate was very different from the situations with Cyborg and Batman.

Too slow! The box office performance was quite impressive, although slightly lower than Batman's, it was stronger than Cyborg's. Why was the fan value increasing so slowly?

"What's going on?"

Anton went online to check the public's reviews of Superman.

Without exception, they all praised the extremely high special effects, exciting plot, and great value for the ticket price, expressing satisfaction with the movie. But from the scattered negative reviews, Anton figured out the reason for the slow fan value increase.

He was successful because of aliens, and he failed because of aliens! The alien Ron-gar's invasion brought a lot of attention to the Superman movie.

But people didn't go to the cinema because they were attracted to Superman; it was purely out of curiosity.

Therefore, they weren't moved by Superman.

Overall, Superman's alien identity made him somewhat unrelatable.

People who had just been hurt by aliens didn't believe that an alien would willingly protect humanity.

Even if this alien had grown up on Earth!

Consequently, Superman's fan value grew far slower than Batman's and Cyborg's.

"At this rate, by the time the movie leaves theaters, he'll only have about 30 million fans at most," Anton mused. "Looks like we need to arrange the next movie quickly!"

"Batman vs. Superman?"

Without a doubt, just like Jim thought, since it was all their own IP, Anton wouldn't feel any pain from milking Batman for all he was worth.

Anyway, Batman's already made a name for himself. It's time for the rest of the Justice League to share in the spotlight.

Green Arrow, this unexpected surprise, didn't he benefit from that?

Ring, ring, ring!

Suddenly, the phone rang, disrupting Anton's train of thought.

He picked up the phone to see who was calling.

The old man.

Jonah Jameson.

"Old man, what's up? Weren't you on vacation in Hawaii, having the time of your life and not wanting to come home?"

Anton answered the call, unable to resist teasing.

"I didn't want to call you either."

Jonah Jameson snorted. "Life in Hawaii is much more exciting than New York. You have no idea how agonizing it is for me to wake up every day."

"Sounds more exciting than aliens, that's for sure."

Anton heard the subtext and was envious to the point of plasmolysis.

"Back to business."

The old man said, "I'm back in New York."

"What?"

Anton was taken aback. "You dare to go back to New York? More rich people have moved out of New York recently than you've probably seen in your entire life."

"Do you think I wanted to come back?"

The old man said, "Someone wants to see you. I have to go back."

"Who's got that much pull?"

Anton frowned slightly.

He wasn't surprised by the statement, but he began to consider the identity of the person.

As the newspaper owner, Jonah Jameson controlled public opinion and was quite famous in American high society, especially among politicians.

Although Jameson wasn't the richest, his status wasn't much lower than the top echelon of wealthy individuals.

After all, politicians needed a platform to speak.

These people and Jameson were a perfect match, a case of "birds of a feather," each exploiting the other.

Especially in New York, a city Jameson had managed for many years, he had a considerable network of contacts.

Therefore, only a handful of people could have summoned Jameson back from Hawaii.

It was worth noting that even during Norman's time at Osborn Corporation, Norman might not have had that much influence.

Anton thought for a moment, realizing a fact.

The person who called Jameson back was definitely not someone who could be simply explained away by wealth, but rather—someone with power.

"You've seen this person before. At least in the news."

Jameson sighed, "The Secretary of Defense, John Keller, wants to see you."

He paused, "I've sent Wick to pick you up. Come downstairs in ten minutes. I'll be waiting for you at home."
