Captain America kept testing his newly enchanted shield — the one imbued with Loyalty.Even with his normally calm temperament, he was like an overgrown kid who'd just gotten his favorite toy, grinning as he played with the vibranium shield that could now fly back into his hand automatically.
Stark and Fury were both left speechless by the display. They had thought the entire process would take at least ten days, maybe half a month — but from the time they entered the room until now, not even ten minutes had passed, and it was already done?
"Oh right, what about that Level-3 Thorns enchantment? What does it do?"Cap suddenly remembered there was another enchantment and turned to Han Yu to ask.
"Hmm… that one, you can test with Director Fury here," Han Yu said, rubbing his chin as a sly glint flashed in his eyes.
"Me?" Fury pointed at himself. "Didn't you say that one was a passive effect?"
"Come on, give the Captain's shield a good hit — but not too hard," Han Yu said casually. Out of nowhere, he produced a wooden stick and handed it to Fury. The man had been standing there looking idle, so Han Yu figured he'd give him something to do.
Taking the stick suspiciously, Fury eyed Han Yu. But the latter's face showed only a calm smile — perfectly normal, seemingly harmless.Deciding there was no trap, Fury gripped the stick in both hands and swung it down hard against Cap's shield.
Clang!
The moment the two made contact, Fury's expression changed. His face flushed red, and a sudden surge of blunt pain shot through his body. His hands trembled, the stick dropped from his grasp, and he let out a startled cry.
"What the hell— I felt like I just got hit myself!" Fury hissed through clenched teeth.
Han Yu pressed his lips together, barely suppressing a smile."Ah… that's the effect of the Thorns enchantment. Anyone who attacks the shield takes forty-five percent of their own attack damage in return. It's perfect when you're surrounded — great for counterattacks."
"There's… a function like that?"
All three men were stunned.A shield that reflects damage — that was insane. If a group of gunmen opened fire, they might drop dead from their own bullets before Cap even reached them.
Hearing the explanation, Cap looked down at his shield with even greater affection. He had never felt such attachment to it before.
"Steve, quit playing. We still have business to discuss."
Fury took several deep breaths as the pain faded, then looked helplessly at the Captain, who was still admiring his new toy. After all, that shield had been his closest companion for years — it was no surprise he felt so sentimental about it.
"More business?" Han Yu asked, a bit surprised. He had thought that was all they came for. Could it be Stark also wanted his equipment upgraded?
He turned toward Stark, who raised both hands innocently and shook his head — nope, not his idea.
Fury spoke up:"We'd like to hire you as S.H.I.E.L.D.'s equipment consultant. You can name your own price."
Hearing that, Han Yu's face didn't change. He sighed lightly."Helping S.H.I.E.L.D.? Wouldn't that just make me an accomplice?"
"Why would you say that? We're the good guys," Fury said, frowning in confusion.
"The good guys? The S.H.I.E.L.D. of today has already lost its way. There are things going on that even you — the Director — don't know about."Han Yu shook his head, a faint, knowing smile on his lips.
"What could there possibly be in S.H.I.E.L.D. that I don't know about?" Fury shot back irritably. He was the Director — he had the highest level of clearance. There couldn't be secrets hidden from him.
"Well then," Han Yu said lightly, "how about a trade? Give me S.H.I.E.L.D.'s top-level clearance, and I'll tell you what it is."
"The top clearance? Are you joking?" Fury scoffed. "Dream on."
Han Yu chuckled."I'm not forcing you. If you don't want to trade, that's fine. But understand — if I have access, S.H.I.E.L.D. will be useful to me. If it ever faces destruction, I'll intervene. If you don't, then whether it lives or dies has nothing to do with me."
He waved a hand dismissively. What he really wanted was access to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s satellite network — to locate mutants across the world. It was the fastest way to start his Mutant Sanctuary Project.
If he couldn't get it, so be it. He could always have Ultron build one for him.
After all, Han Yu could literally carry a satellite into orbit himself. That alone would save him the launch costs.
"S.H.I.E.L.D. destroyed? That's the funniest thing I've heard all day," Fury said with a dark scowl. To him, Han Yu now looked like nothing more than a greedy, unreasonable businessman. Even his tone had turned sarcastic.
"If you don't believe me, the door's right there," Han Yu said coolly, pointing toward it.
"You— …wait." Captain America quickly stepped in."Han, how about this — you tell us what you know first. If your intel turns out to be useful, I'll personally make sure you get full access to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s top clearance. I won't go back on my word."
Cap stepped forward, speaking earnestly. In his impression, Han Yu was always easy to talk to — back at the banquet, they'd chatted a few times, and Han Yu had always been friendly and calm.
Most importantly, Steve didn't believe Han Yu would lie just to cheat S.H.I.E.L.D. out of access. With his power, Han Yu could simply storm into the homes of the people behind S.H.I.E.L.D. and force them to hand over clearance if he wanted to.
The fact that he was willing to negotiate at all showed that he wasn't some brute — and that he didn't wish to destroy S.H.I.E.L.D. unnecessarily.
"…Fine," Han Yu said at last. "For your sake, Captain, I'll agree."
He trusted Steve. It was precisely because of his unwavering belief in justice that he was Captain America. Kindness and integrity had always been his core values.
Without those, the young soldier Erskine had once believed in — the man chosen to become a Super Soldier — would have long since lost his way after the professor's death.
"Director Fury," Han Yu continued, "you mentioned earlier that you'd be carrying out a mission in a few days. Actually… it's tonight, isn't it?You're heading to a mobile satellite launch platform called… the Lemuria Star, if I recall correctly?"
Han Yu paused for a moment before speaking.
"You hacked our system?" Fury's face darkened several shades.
Because what Han Yu said was completely accurate. He hadn't even told Captain America about that mission yet, which meant Han Yu could only have learned it one way — by breaching S.H.I.E.L.D.'s data network.
In Fury's mind, that was the only explanation.
