An Yan struggled to free himself from Tsunade's embrace and reluctantly left his home.
At Training Ground 13, the three kids were already assembled.
Seeing him arrive, Nawaki said excitedly, "Teacher An Yan, what kind of mission are we doing today? Protecting a daimyo? Or killing a spy hidden in Konoha?"
An Yan smiled. "Don't worry, it's a mission that will really build your character. You'll definitely gain a lot from it."
"Are we going to sabotage an enemy country? Or steal some state secrets?"
Nawaki was full of curiosity, and the other two looked at him with the same eager, burning gaze.
"You'll see when we get there."
An Yan didn't answer, just led the way.
The four of them soon arrived at a field. Nawaki's face fell. "So we're harvesting crops? What a waste of our talent."
"Since we're here, stop complaining. Get started. Once you've harvested this entire field, today's mission is over."
An Yan casually tossed a sealing scroll on the ground. A parasol, a sun hat, and a rocking chair appeared. He settled comfortably into the chair and opened a medical book.
The three kids looked at each other and had no choice but to roll up their sleeves and get to work, grabbing sickles and gloves.
An Yan leisurely read his book, occasionally looking up with an expression of profound understanding. In the field, the three kids swung their sickles so fast they were practically a blur. Finally, just before noon, they had finished harvesting the entire field.
The farmer came over to thank An Yan. After a few polite words, An Yan led the kids to submit the mission.
Nawaki was still grumbling. "Why am I the one doing all the work, but he's thanking Teacher An Yan?"
Kana covered her mouth and giggled. "Because he's the team leader."
Nawaki was even more disgruntled. "I know he's the team leader, but I still don't get it."
An Yan smiled and patted his head. "Is it because I didn't do anything that you think the farmer shouldn't thank me?"
Nawaki nodded vigorously. "Yeah! Why should he?"
An Yan smiled. "An S-rank mission pays a million ryo. A D-rank mission pays five thousand. I'm wasting my time here with you on a low-rank mission, losing out on all that money. Don't you think the farmer should thank me?"
"How can the difference be that big?"
Nawaki was so surprised he almost jumped. Minato and Kana were also shocked.
Nawaki immediately started clamoring to do an S-rank mission. An Yan flicked him on the forehead.
"An S-rank mission means a direct confrontation between nations. You might face one or more Jonin. It's not a mission for a fresh graduate like you."
Hearing this, Nawaki clenched his fists. A new light filled his eyes. He shouted with passion, "I'm fired up! I'll set a small goal: I'll train hard to become a Jonin as soon as possible so I can do S-rank missions for the village!"
An Yan was silent. Why is Nawaki so dramatic? He remembered the fan theory that Nawaki, like Hashirama, was a reincarnation of Asura's chakra. Although there was no direct proof, their passionate spirit was certainly inherited.
They arrived at the mission hall. An Yan overheard Hiruzen Sarutobi saying, "So the Kagerō Village has been destroyed? What a pity. The ninja world has lost another village."
An Yan had never heard of the Kagerō Village and didn't care. A village not in the main plot probably didn't have anything good.
He submitted the mission scroll. Hiruzen, as if prepared, handed him a new one.
"This is tomorrow's mission. Cleaning up trash from the river."
An Yan glanced at the rank. It was C-rank. Are they afraid a ninja might die from the smell? A C-rank mission meant there was some danger. The only danger in picking up trash was probably the smell. Surely they wouldn't drown?
"Thank you for your hard work, Lord Hokage."
An Yan took the mission scroll but didn't leave immediately. He exchanged a few pleasantries with the Third before leaving.
Outside the room, Nawaki whispered to Minato and the others about the hypocrisy of adults.
An Yan punched him on the head. "If you're going to talk bad about people behind their backs, at least do it from a distance. I can hear you from here."
"Ouch!" Nawaki clutched his head. The scene reminded An Yan of Tom from Tom and Jerry.
After receiving their pay, they had a simple meal, and then An Yan took them back to the training ground.
He began to assign their next training tasks: tree climbing and water walking.
Nawaki was dismissive. "Do we really need to practice that?"
An Yan raised an eyebrow. "So you already know how? Come on, Nawaki, show us your talent."
Nawaki dashed up a tree, looking very steady. Then he jumped down and walked lightly on the surface of the river without sinking.
It seems the overall quality of ninja in this era is a bit higher than later on, An Yan thought.
Minato and Kana also demonstrated their mastery of the skills.
An Yan clapped. "Very good. You've mastered things the academy didn't teach you at such a young age. You're all geniuses. In that case, let's move on to chakra nature transformation."
The three of them clearly knew what that was, so An Yan didn't need to explain much. They all started practicing on their own, clearly having already spent a lot of time on it.
An Yan had long since mastered all the nature transformations. He was now mainly researching Sage Mode.
Sage Mode was something that could even be useful against Six Paths Madara. Of course, he would study it. For years, he had been trying to find a way for a ninja to become a sage through medical knowledge, but he hadn't had much success.
The human body is too complex, and external natural energy would destroy the body's own tissues upon entry. To really learn how to use it, he would probably have to find Jugo and study his natural Sage Body.
Jugo probably wasn't even born yet. Unless he made a breakthrough himself, he would have to wait many years.
But the intensity of battles in this era wasn't that high yet. He didn't need Sage Mode for now. An Yan wasn't in a hurry. He was taking it one step at a time. He had already gotten Tsunade in this world. That was already a win. No matter what happened in the future, it would be worth it.
