Chapter 81 - Nick Fury Dies! Awakening the First Mutant: Apocalypse

When Nick Fury saw Chen Xi return, he stood there in stunned silence for a long moment—then suddenly laughed.

"Hahaha… I lost."

He was unexpectedly calm, accepting his defeat with serenity. After all, this had always been a gamble.

"Nick Fury, Nick Fury… I never thought you'd lose your mind like this. You ignored the mutant academy, ignored the Brotherhood, and instead came after me. Why?"

Chen Xi asked, genuinely puzzled. He couldn't understand why Fury would make such a move.

"To catch the thief, you must first seize the king. We thought you had some special ability to counter the Sentinel robots… but I was wrong."

Fury shook his head. They had wanted to strike quickly, afraid of giving Chen Xi time to react. The other mutants were never the real threat.

"So your failure was inevitable," Chen Xi said lightly. "Even Carol as your secret trump card didn't help you."

He smiled faintly. He had to admit, Fury's plan was well thought-out—it wasn't a desperate move.

"Yes… I truly didn't expect your power to be this overwhelming. I underestimated you—and everyone else."

Fury let out a weary sigh. Everything that happened had been a chain of coincidences.

If Chen Xi hadn't been able to resist Jason's illusions…

If he hadn't been able to defeat Carol…

But there were no ifs.

Winners became kings, losers were nothing.

Fury's choices hadn't been wrong. Every decision he made was, in fact, the most rational one. He had simply chosen the wrong opponent.

And the man himself was interesting—he was the one who formed the Avengers, who led them to repel alien invasions.

Cunning, ruthless, brilliant, manipulative—and just a bit unlucky.

Chen Xi couldn't help but respect such a man. Their conflict wasn't about right or wrong; only different sides of the same coin.

And for such a worthy opponent, he deserved a dignified exit.

"Nick Fury, you're a good adversary," Chen Xi said softly. "Don't be too sad. End it with dignity."

"…Thank you."

Fury smiled faintly, accepting his fate. Slowly, he raised his pistol, taking one last look at S.H.I.E.L.D.—his lifelong creation and obsession.

Every corner of this place carried his sweat and blood. Too bad he wouldn't see it shine any brighter.

"Oh, by the way," Chen Xi added, almost casually, "I forgot to tell you—S.H.I.E.L.D. should actually be called H.Y.D.R.A. Shield. Eighty percent of your agents are Hydra operatives."

Fury froze on the spot, his expression blank. He didn't doubt Chen Xi's words—instead, terror gripped his heart.

So he'd been living in a snake's nest all along? The intruder wasn't Hydra—it was him?

He stood there for a long while before finally letting out a bitter laugh.

"So be it," he murmured. "None of this matters anymore."

With a single gunshot, the man who had once ruled the Marvel world in the shadows—Nick Fury—fell in a tragic, lonely end.

With the dragon slain, S.H.I.E.L.D. lost its head, and Pierce's faction completely took control. From then on, S.H.I.E.L.D. became the "Snake Shield," a puppet under Hydra's command.

Hill, Natasha, and others quietly left. Life had to go on, after all.

Chen Xi didn't bother exterminating Pierce and his Hydra cronies. Sometimes, villains were worth keeping around—for when you needed to "butcher a pig" later.

News reports soon broke: the alien invasion had completely annihilated the U.S. Navy base. Countless warships, carriers, and aircraft were destroyed. The death toll exceeded 300,000.

The world was shocked. One alien ship had nearly wiped out Earth's greatest military power.

Global leaders began to question if alien technology had truly advanced to such a terrifying level.

Having lost its most formidable sea and air forces, the U.S. turned inward, quietly rebuilding its strength. Weapons could always be remade with money—but the price was steep.

Overnight, the world's "superpower" had lost its fangs. The once-proud tiger was now toothless, and regaining its bite would take years.

Between nations, there were no friends—only interests. A plucked phoenix was worth less than a chicken.

Major powers quickly united, overturning previous unfair trade agreements, seizing U.S. overseas oil and mining interests under the pretense of "protecting global freedom."

Facing this feeding frenzy, the American leadership could only grit their teeth. Their so-called "allies" had stabbed them in the back.

"Damn bastards! Just you wait!" they swore in secret.

Meanwhile, Chen Xi had entered the global spotlight. Though few knew he was behind the alien crisis, his identity as a super-mutant was exposed.

He had single-handedly stormed S.H.I.E.L.D. and killed Nick Fury.

To governments, he was a lawless criminal who defied all authority.

They couldn't move against him openly—but covertly, they began targeting him relentlessly. His film studio and CyberTech company faced endless inspections.

Business, tax, fire safety, environmental checks—every agency found a reason to harass him.

Eventually, they shut down his VR game project, citing "national security concerns."

Propaganda painted him as a foreign spy corrupting the youth.

Under the relentless smear campaign, public opinion turned. His American fanbase abandoned him, shouting for him to "go back to his own country."

"Tsk, tsk… Not bad," Chen Xi sneered. "You wanna play dirty? You think I can't?"

Smear tactics? Please. That was his specialty.

Once the Red Queen began digging, no secret could stay buried.

Corruption, bribery, mistresses, power-for-sale—everything came to light.

Even though those accused denied it, everyone knew the truth. The public wasn't stupid.

Things escalated further—Chen Xi's personal and corporate accounts were frozen. Even his Swiss bank accounts were compromised; so much for "neutrality."

At the same time, governments intensified their crackdown on mutants. Not even Charles could restrain the rising anger anymore.

Most mutants joined the resistance.

And that… was the final straw.

Infuriated, Chen Xi decided to give the world a "super surprise."

The Nile Valley, Egypt.

A lone figure stood beneath a sky of swirling yellow sand.

Chen Xi smiled brightly.

"You've slept for thousands of years… it's time to wake up. Someone has betrayed you."
