"DXD: Transfer Student"Chapter 173: You Like Him?
When the last class let out, club activities resumed as usual.
For the Occult Research Club, that meant sending the devil peerage off to fulfill contract requests. Draconis pulled out his phone and dialed Miku Nakano.
The call went through, her voice a little tight with nerves.
"Hello?"
"Miku, are you all home yet?"
"Um, I'm here with Ichika and Itsuki. Nino and Yotsuba are still out…"
"Wait for me at home," Draconis said. "I'll bring Nino and Yotsuba back. Time to see if those tutoring sessions paid off."
"Okay…"
Miku stared at her phone after hanging up, drawing a deep breath.
The test scores had been posted at school earlier, but the sisters had agreed: no one would peek at the rankings until Draconis arrived—then they'd compare, see who came out on top.
Miku glanced at her own score. No doubt about it—her highest mark ever.
She could do this.
She'd come in first among the five.
If she really was number one, she'd confess to Draconis. That promise was set in stone.
She didn't notice Ichika watching her, expression unreadable.
Meanwhile, Draconis teleported to the quintuplets' school. According to Miku, Yotsuba was still caught up in club activities.
Yotsuba stood in front of her basketball teammates, looking torn—trying to find the words.
"Um, Captain… I…"
"What's up, Yotsuba? You were awesome today! Seriously, the club wouldn't be the same without you!"
The captain clapped Yotsuba on the shoulder, beaming. Yotsuba froze, struggling to respond.
She wanted to quit, but couldn't figure out how to say it. Especially with everyone looking at her so hopefully—how was she supposed to disappoint them?
"C'mon, Yotsuba, let's keep training! Tomorrow we've got a tougher team to beat!"
"Heh, with our ace Yotsuba, no one can stop us!"
Everyone was so upbeat, Yotsuba just stood there, lost for words.
Then she heard a familiar voice.
"Yotsuba."
She spun around. "Draconis? How did you—how are you at our school…?"
Her teammates looked just as confused.
"Is he from another school? Wait, how did he get past the front gate…?"
Draconis smiled at Yotsuba, then addressed the group, "I'm here to take Yotsuba home."
"But she's got club practice," one girl protested.
"It's just club," Draconis replied, calm. "Skipping won't kill her. She needs to focus on her studies."
"What? We've got a big game tomorrow! Studying can wait!" another teammate insisted.
Yotsuba, caught in the middle, hesitated. Before she could speak, Draconis cut in, voice suddenly cool:
"Seems like you've got your priorities backwards. If students don't put academics first, what's the point of being a student?"
His tone was mild, but the weight behind the words made the girls shrink back. Draconis's aura—honed by years of combat—had a way of silencing a room, even if he wasn't trying.
So intimidating…
So overbearing…
Everyone thought it, but no one dared say a word.
Draconis had no interest in bullying them—he just turned to Yotsuba, casual as ever.
"It's settled. Handle your withdrawal, then head home."
"Uh… okay…" Yotsuba managed, half amused, half exasperated. The thing she'd agonized over for weeks—solved in three sentences.
She turned to her teammates, apologetic. "Sorry, everyone. I really do need to quit. I want to use the extra time to study."
Draconis watched from a distance, a faint smile on his lips. Yotsuba had finally learned to say no. Sometimes, she just needed a little push.
Outside the school, Draconis hailed a cab for her. "Head home first. I'll go get Nino. Meet you all at your place."
"Okay! Just wait—my score's going to blow you away!" Yotsuba grinned.
"I'll be waiting," Draconis chuckled, watching her drive off before teleporting to Nino's location.
Nino was in a gift shop, brows furrowed, clearly agonizing over something.
"What should I get him…"
The middle-aged shop owner just smiled knowingly. She'd seen plenty of lovestruck teens come through.
Following Nino's aura, Draconis walked in just as she was still debating.
"Nino."
She spun around, startled. "You—how did you find me…?"
"Not hard," Draconis said, glancing at the shelves. "Picking out a gift? Decided yet?"
"Quit rushing me… I'm still choosing," Nino said, trying to sound cool but failing to hide her nerves.
How did he just show up out of nowhere? She'd wanted to surprise him…
Well, at least he didn't know the gift was for him. Yet.
"Who's it for? Guy or girl?" Draconis asked, casual.
"…Guy," Nino replied, face heating up.
Draconis didn't miss a beat. "You like him?"
"…Y-yeah! So what? Got a problem?" she shot back, feigning bravado.
"I'm just trying to help you out," Draconis said, scanning the shelves. He pointed to a men's belt and a watch. "These two are solid picks."
"If it were you, which would you want?" Nino asked, testing the waters—and congratulating herself for her cleverness.
Nothing beats asking the target directly, right?
"Belt," Draconis said, smiling.
"Why not the watch?"
He held up his wrist, showing off a limited-edition watch—Mai Sakurajima's gift. "Most girls go for watches. Odds are, the guy you're thinking of's already gotten one."
Nino: "…"
