"DXD: Transfer Student"Chapter 174: Sudden Confession

Draconis had meant well—he'd been genuinely thoughtful, helping Nino choose a gift.

He just didn't expect that, after hearing his answer, Nino would deflate like a flower hit by frost.

She stared at the watch on his wrist, dazed.

Someone already gave him a watch?

Who was it…?

Damn. Someone beat me to it.

Feeling a swirl of emotions, Nino bought the belt instead, carefully stowing it in her bag.

No way was she giving up so easily. Draconis hadn't said he liked anyone—she still had a shot.

Nino was the type who, once she set her mind on something, stuck to it—no matter what.

"Let's head back. Everyone's waiting," Draconis said, glancing at her. "Want to fly home?"

"Really? Like you did with Ichika last time?"

Nino's eyes lit up. Ever since Draconis had whisked Ichika through the sky, her sisters had been dying to try it, but none had dared to ask.

Draconis chuckled. "What did Ichika tell you?"

"She said it was super exciting!" Nino tried to sound casual, but the truth was, every one of them thought being carried through the sky was wildly romantic.

"Alright then. Let's give you the full experience."

He bent down and scooped Nino up in a princess carry.

Because ordinary humans like Nino lacked any magic, the usual teleportation circles wouldn't work—so this was the only way to bring her along.

The moment Draconis lifted her, Nino's heart soared. She tried to hide her grin, but it was hopeless.

A real princess carry!

Those arms… so strong…

Ever since she'd touched Draconis's arm and realized just how solid he was, she'd secretly fantasized about what it would feel like to be held by him.

Now, dream come true—no warning, no buildup.

She couldn't help herself. The guy was just… magnetic. Maybe it was his unique aura, that way he stood out in any crowd.

Ever since Draconis stopped hiding his true self and embraced being a devil, that sense of freedom and confidence had only grown. Combined with his quiet steadiness, it was impossible not to notice him.

Draconis, meanwhile, assumed Nino was just excited about flying.

He didn't have mind-reading powers, after all—and a girl's thoughts could be easy to guess, or totally baffling.

He flew her straight to the quintuplets' house, where Yotsuba had already arrived.

As Draconis floated in through the window, still holding Nino, Miku puffed out her cheeks in envy.

"What's with that…?" Ichika's eyelid twitched.

"It's just faster this way. What's the big deal?" Nino said, trying for nonchalance—but the smug curve of her lips gave her away.

Draconis settled onto the living room sofa, calm as ever, facing all five sisters.

"Since everyone's here, hand me your test papers."

The sisters exchanged glances, then solemnly pulled their results from their bags.

Draconis took the midterms seriously—it was a key milestone. If they passed, he'd basically fulfilled their commission ahead of schedule.

He reviewed all five grade sheets.

The sisters smiled, unable to hide their pride—they'd already peeked at their scores.

"…Not bad. All of you passed."

"Yes!" The room erupted in cheers.

Draconis allowed himself a small smile. All that effort hadn't been wasted—the quintuplets had made it.

"Especially Ichika—her total score's the highest."

He said it quietly, but the words hit Miku like a thunderbolt.

Ichika… got the highest score?

Miku stared at her, stunned.

She'd told Ichika: if I get the highest score, I'll confess to Draconis.

But now—Ichika had taken the top spot.

Hadn't she barely studied?

Ichika exhaled, relieved. "Eh? I'm the top scorer? That's… unexpected. Haha…"

She laughed, but her eyes darted away from Miku's.

Truth was, she'd been secretly studying.

Work was exhausting, but the thought of Miku confessing to Draconis made it impossible to just let things be.

Because… Ichika liked him too.

She was the eldest—she should look out for her sisters.

But handing him over to Miku? That was a bit much.

No one noticed the silent rivalry between Ichika and Miku.

But at that moment, Nino stood up.

"Alright! Since this is such a memorable moment, I have an announcement!"

All eyes turned to her.

She opened her bag, took out the belt she'd bought, and placed it in Draconis's hands—solemn, determined.

"I like you!"

The room froze.

Draconis blinked at the familiar gift in his hands.

Wait—what?

"N-N-Nino…" Miku stammered, voice trembling.

"This…" Ichika was visibly shocked.

"Eh!? Nino…" Yotsuba was speechless, mouth opening and closing, unsure what to say.

Itsuki nearly choked on her cake, hurriedly gulping water before staring blankly at Nino.

Draconis recovered quickly. After a moment's surprise, he pressed his lips together.

"I understand, Nino. But—I'm a devil."

"So what? There's no rule saying I can't like a devil. And no rule saying a devil can't like a human, right?"

Nino was fearless.

Draconis couldn't help but sigh. He tried to explain:

"What I mean is, devils and humans have different values. I've got several girls I care about—some human, some devil. That's not how humans think. You barely know me. Even knowing this, would you still like me?"

"Huh… what!?"

The sisters were floored.

They'd never really thought about that…

"See? What you feel for me is mostly curiosity—and maybe a little awe for the supernatural."

Draconis's tone was gentle. "Now that the commission's done, maybe everyone should take some time to think things over…"
