Their eyes met—and suddenly, a wave of screaming erupted behind them.
Sophia looked back just in time to see Lucas stepping out of the Lincoln, cold-faced and devastatingly handsome.
"He's here to pick me up," she said calmly. "Paul, I really thought I wanted to talk to you today, maybe even convince you to leave your position. But clearly that was unnecessary. If you ever figure things out, you can come find me."
She stood and glanced around at the neatly lined-up, excited crowd. The corner of her lips lifted.
At the bar counter, she quietly slid out her black card.
"Cover the whole café," she told the barista, her voice low enough that no one else could hear.
Outside, Lucas held the door for her like a gentleman. As soon as she stepped out, he swiftly slipped something warm into her hand.
Heat spread across her palm—it was a pink hand warmer.
"I bought more things for you at the office," he said. "Let's go back together."
"Okay."
