As soon as Harper disappeared down the hallway, I turned to Jason, who showed no signs of leaving.
"Listen, Jason—"
"I don't want to listen to you!" he barked. "You had ten fucking years to make me listen, but you vanished. And it wasn't just me, you abandoned Mila, too. Maybe I can get over what you did to me, but her? Never."
"I didn't abandon you!" I snapped, my voice rising despite myself. I ran a hand through my hair, gripping the strands at the roots. "Damn it, Jason, it wasn't like that."
"Oh yeah?" he scoffed. "Like I'd believe anything that comes out of your mouth now."
I slammed my palm down hard on the counter. The sharp crack echoed through the room. Jason flinched. His eyes widened, and he took a full step back.
Shit.
My chest tightened. That look—fear—cut deeper than I expected. What the hell had he seen in me just now?
