To continue our story, Harry's formal salute left the centaur at a loss.
He had lived in the Forbidden Forest for decades and met many wizards, but he had never seen such a ceremony.
The centaur assumed he was just ignorant and helped Harry up. "It's all right, Mr. Potter. Even if you weren't here, I would have fought the one who murdered the unicorn. The Forbidden Forest is my home."
This forest spanned thousands of acres, vast and dense. Countless fierce and strange beasts lurked within it, more dangerous than Peach Blossom Mountain, more wicked than the Red Pine Forest.
Harry thought: This centaur calls such a deadly place home. He must be a skilled warrior. Why don't I befriend him?
He clasped his hands. "Brother, you are too formal. Just call this humble one Harry."
The centaur paused. "Ah... I am Firenze."
He pondered Harry's strange way of speaking. "Please, get on my back, Harry. I think it would be safest for you to be with Hagrid right now."
Harry replied, "This one's four limbs are sound, and I am not injured. Why would I need Brother to carry me?"
"But you only have two legs. You will have trouble keeping up with my speed."
Harry tried to refuse, but seeing his insistence, he had no choice but to say, "Since you put it that way, this one thanks you, Brother. If you ever have need of me in the future, through water or fire, I will not hesitate!"
"Ah... Harry, I haven't seen a wizard other than Hagrid in a long time. Do all wizards speak like you now?"
Harry climbed onto his back, grabbing his mane. "Brother, that's a strange question. As long as the words flow easily, who cares what style they are?"
Firenze considered this for a moment, nodded, and then took off, his four hooves flying.
The centaur was as fast as the wind, covering several miles in moments. Harry, seeing him heading straight out of the forest, called out, "Brother, are you mistaken about the path? Brother Hagrid is still in the woods, why are we leaving?"
"Hagrid has already left the forest. The planets told me." Firenze did not slow down, looking up at the sky. "The planets hide many secrets, of the present and the future. Centaurs see them more clearly than wizards."
Harry was amazed. The centaur tribe also had the skills of royal astronomers.
He clasped his hands. "Brother, if you have such skills in reading destiny and the stars, please trouble yourself to ask the planets: who was that black-robed, blood-drinking man?"
Firenze ignored the question and asked one of his own. "Harry, do you know what unicorn blood is used for?"
"This one has only used the hide and horn, but I do not know the use of the blood."
"Unicorn blood can prolong your life," Firenze sighed. "Even if you are inches from death, the moment its blood touches your lips, you will be granted a half-life."
As the saying goes, fortune and misfortune are intertwined. Harry heard the benefit and knew there was a drawback. "If that is the good, what is the bad?"
"You will live a cursed life for all your remaining days, cursed by this pure and noble creature."
Harry said, "Just a curse is no great matter. But to murder a life just to scrape by... that is not the act of a true man."
"But some people don't care—Harry, do you know what is hidden in the school right now?"
"Could it be the Philosopher's Stone?"
"Then, can you not figure it out?" Firenze stopped and looked back. "Who in the school desires the power of eternal life?"
Harry replied, "That would be me."
When Firenze heard this, his eyes bulged like copper bells, and it felt as if a thousand-pound millstone was on his tongue; he couldn't utter half a word.
After a long moment, he finally spoke. "No, Harry. I am talking about the one who is half-dead, who needs this cursed blood to prolong his life just long enough to use the Philosopher's Stone."
Firenze was trying to give him a clear hint. How could Harry not understand? Who else could it be but the supposedly dead Voldemort?
In an instant, a sharp grinding sound came from the scarred lad's mouth, as if two sabers were clashing between his teeth. Sparks flew from the corners of his mouth, threatening to burn the very forest to the ground.
"That damned scoundrel! I am furious! I actually let that thief Voldemort get away!"
Hearing the name Voldemort, Firenze also grew uneasy, stamping his hooves.
He was about to speak, but Harry suddenly leaped off his back and turned to run back into the forest. Firenze quickly called, "Harry, what are you doing?"
"I am going to slaughter that scoundrel Voldemort and avenge my parents!"
Seeing him wreathed in killing intent, Firenze hurried to block his path. "Harry, he has already fled! He will not come back."
Harry's eyes were bloodshot, nearly biting through his gums. "Let him run! This one will hunt him down!"
"If I don't carve out his heart for soup, chop his bones for stew, and pull out his tongue to pair with wine, how can this one's hatred ever be quenched!"
Centaurs were, by nature, peaceful. How could they have ever heard such venomous words? Harry's vow was like the hiss of a demon, making Firenze's hair stand on end and his heart tremble.
"But he won't be in the forest anymore, because he has been exposed," Firenze swallowed, taking two steps back. "The next time he appears, it will be to steal the Philosopher's Stone."
The centaur reasoned with him again and again before Harry finally calmed his furious fire.
"Get on, Harry. It is better that we leave the forest."
"That damned scoundrel! I truly, truly hate him!"
Firenze said no more, only quickening his pace.
When the two left the forest, Hagrid and the other two were already waiting with the dragon.
Seeing Harry and the centaur, Hagrid exclaimed, "Oh! Firenze? What are you doing here?"
"Good evening, Hagrid." Firenze nodded. "I ran into Harry by chance. He is yours now."
With that, he galloped back into the forest.
As the centaur vanished, Hagrid said, "Harry, how did you meet Firenze? Did something happen out there?"
Harry nodded. "I cannot hide this from you, Brother. This one encountered that scoundrel, Voldemort."
The words struck them like a clap of thunder from a clear sky, like a great tiger leaping from the flat ground. It shocked them so badly their souls scattered, and they all froze as if hit by a full-body-bind curse. Even the dragon folded its wings and dared not make a sound.
"Ha-Harry, you can't joke about things like that!" Hagrid finally came to his senses, stammering. "He's gone!"
Ron, his face pale, said, "Harry, are you sure you didn't see wrong?"
Seeing they didn't believe him, Harry took off his robe and displayed the silver bloodstain. "Brother, if you don't believe me, just look at this blood!"
Hagrid knew all about magical creatures. How could he not recognize unicorn blood?
He cried out in terror, "Merlin's beard! He's really back?!"
Harry ignored this, grabbed his robe, and stalked toward the castle. Hermione saw him and quickly called, "Harry, where are you going?"
"I have some choice words that I must discuss with that old fellow, Dumbledore!"
