Chapter 2 - Chosen one

A creature stood in front of the dead body, taking in its last expression before dying, its hollow eyes looking down at the ground where the blood created a small puddle.

His naked misty figure shone under the clouded sun as he knelt in front of Vlad and grinned.

Grasping him by the chin, the creature said with a hint of amusement mixed in its voice.

"So you're the one."

And then without hesitation pressed his fingers on the dead man's forehead.

"Wake up."

He said as the life returned to his eyes and he took the sight of whatever was standing in front of him.

"And greet your God."

The mans eyes widened upon these words as he fell down on the cold snow

I sat in the snow immersed in my thoughts while a white figure sat across me watching me curiously.

After a few moments, I finally calmed down and stopped thinking unnecessary thoughts.

"So you're telling me I died?"

"That's right."

"Hmm."

Scratching the back of my head, I stared at the supposed 'god' who was right now talking to me and even waiting patiently.

'Now that I think about it, isn't it weird for him to actually go and meet me? Doesn't he have better things to do?'

"You're thinking why I'm here, right?"

"Don't worry, I planned on explaining it from the beginning."

"So-"

Before I could ask him more questions, he stood up and started walking somewhere. I got up hastily trying to keep up.

The snow on our bodies, instead of melting, disappeared into the air as if it were nothing.

"You see."

He suddenly spoke up to me.

"You caught my eye, to be honest ."

The god slowed down his pace, turning his head towards me.

"Your life, your connections, your character and every single aspect of you are so simple and boring that it seems you yourself didn't actually like it."

His tone carried an eerie calm like that of a flowing mountain river.

To rate my life as something so.. worthless, stung a little at the corner of my dead heart.

Sadly, he was right. As i grew up in the orphanage, instead of trying to get back on my feet or atleast grieve for my parents death, i did nothing. From the moment i reached the age of majority, all i did was find the easiest job i had qualifications for and spend my days doing nothing.

'Still, there was still time..'

"But now look at you."

Pressing a finger against my chest. He added without an ounce of empathy for my state.

"You're reduced to a simple wandering soul by the hands of someone you never even knew."

"Wait then who killed me-"

"Shush."

Before i could finish my words he shut my mouth with his finger, even without eyes it seemed like i was considered a simple child.

"That is something that i cant and won't tell you, i don't want to make you hate anyone and die with regrets."

'Okay..'

He seemed to understand, taking his hands back and turning away from me.

"Its not like you are going to stay dead forever." He added casually.

"What?"

I blurted out unconciously.

God gave me a glance before hitting himself in the forehead as if remembering something.

"Ah right! I forgot to mention the reason i'm meeting you."

He soon raised his hand, and like some sort of machinery ,the entire area started to slowly shift and expand.

The snow-covered field started to grow out patches of fresh grass, coldness was replaced by the warm summer breeze. Clouds gradually faded away leaving the sun hanging by itself, like a drop of paint on a light blue canvas.

Under our feet rose dozens of wooden pillars as if they sprouted into a big wooden cube that encased both of us inside. Two windows carved themself on the sides of the walls, letting the sun rest on the fresh oak floor.

A small fireplace lit up the dark interior of the makeshift house, exposing two big leather armchairs with a tiny coffee table in between.

"Care to take a seat?"

Just as the words left his mouth, his body appeared on one of the armchairs carefully drinking from a cup.

'right, hes god'

Whatever he did and could do was out of my expectations, as a god he could do anything he wanted but there had to be some limitations. Or maybe..

A thought crossed my mind but i dismissed it, turning to the empty armchair and planning to take a seat. The second i blinked, my surroundings changed slightly. It was as if i did a complete 180 degree turn.

I saw the fireplace on the other side and the god who was right in front of me, that was the moment i noticed myself sitting on the empty armchair.

'Holy shi-'

"Ekhem, anyways."

Not caring about my suprise, he feigned a cough trying to finally get to the point.

He leaned in, holding a cup in one hand.

"You were chosen to be a 'hero' of a certain world."

"The what?"

Looking at him with a confused expression i tried to gauge any answer or explanation.

He just shrugged and continued.

"You will need to become strong, way stronger than you could even imagine. That is because that world is headed towards destrucion. People.. need a saviour, someone who can help them in need, a person that will stand like a shield on the front. So i chose you."

'....Why?'

He ignored my question, i knew that it would be pointless to even question his decision, but i wasn't sure if it was a good choice, if my talentless life was something they needed then he could have taken anyone else.

During his explanation, i felt that he tried to tell me as much as he could but his face was getting more strained with each spoken word.

'Is it similar to when i asked about my killer's identity?'

Just how many things did this entity sitting in front of me in this small isolated space know?

If it was so hard to explain something to someone like me then how could a god who created existence itself have a hard time with me, someone not worth his time.

"So then."

He seemed to have said enough about the dangers of the said catastrophe as he sunk back in the leather armchair, looking, or atleast what seemed to be looking at me, i was unsure due to the abscence of his eyes.

"Will you accept this?"

"Wait, i need to actually agree to this? I thought i had no choice but to do this." I asked surprised.

"It's still a good thing to ask, i can find another person but you are special and you never know how many years or decades it will take for another one to appear."

'that.. makes sense'

"But what if i disagree?"

The god let out a small sigh before turning to the fireplace.

"If you agree then you start out your life as a prepared vessel that was nurtured by me, you won't gain or lose anything, its like simply changing homes. But if you disagree.."

He looked back at me, with an expressionless smile on his blank white body.

"You die."

We sat there accompanied by the comforting silence. The crackling of the fireplace was the only thing that reminded me this was reality, but what filled my mind was that.

'Im special.'

I wasn't useless for once, i didn't have to be noticed by everyone to accomplish something, i was born special, and i was chosen, the god said that no one could replace me for dozen's of year's so why would i disagree.

"Il gladly accept."

With a smile on my face, i faced the god who has given me a chance to take another breath. He smiled back showing his teeth that blended with his skin.

He checked his wrist which had nothing attached to it, i swear his eyebrows raised as he hopped up to me grabbing my wrist.

'?'

Then, coming from his palms i saw a blue light flow into me, despite my startled state, i soaked everything in like a sponge. My body started feeling some kind of power flowing within it.

The light started to take shape, engraving a set of unidentifiable runes on it's surface which i could barely make out due to how dizzy i had gotten for some reason.

"Phew, i did it on time."

I could hear gods voice echo from the side. He sounded relieved about something while my vision was slowly turning blurry and the surroundings collapsed one by one.

"It seems i cant talk to you any longer so let me give you one last piece of advice."

His voice sounded distant unlike before, i couldn't see much except his blurry white figure and a smile that was imprinted in my brain.

"Listen to the system."

My body felt exceptionally heavy and yet it was light, my mind was confused but also relaxed, i couldn't tell what i felt anymore after seeing everything turning pitch black.

"And good luck."

His voice seemed to still make it to my ears as he gave me the encouragement i didn't refuse.

"In your new home called Rift."
