Chapter 35 - Breakfast with the family

Cassian's POV

I didn't move. For a long, taut second, neither did he. His eyes flickered briefly —not anger this time, but something else. Something unreadable, but it was gone before I could fathom it.

He is probably a different person at all times. I couldn't help but remember how fragile he looked last night when he slept, when he struggled in his sleep.

He has nightmares, too. We might be mirrors of ourselves somehow.

Finally, he turned toward the door. "Five minutes," he said over his shoulder. "Or I'll come back and dress you myself, and I'm sure you are not going to like it."

The door closed behind him with a quiet click.

I sat there for a while, breathing hard, the tension between fear and defiance choking me. Then, slowly, I rose and walked to the bathroom, had a quick shower, checking the time at intervals.
