Celine's POV
"But you brought her to a family's breakfast for goodness' sake, what do you expect me to do with that?" Mrs Damien yelled.
She continued, " Sitting at this table means," she continued, her tone low and cutting, "that if you are going to sit here, you had better learn to hold your head higher than that, or keep it bowed forever. There's no in-between in this family."
My chest tightened. I didn't know if she wanted to frighten me or break me. Maybe both.
"I understand," I whispered.
Cassian's hand twitched beside mine, but he didn't say anything.
The tension only grew thicker, as everyone just stole suspicious glances at each other.
The door suddenly opened, and Luciana walked in. I never thought she would come, and I was almost relieved that the evil on the table was at least one, but I guess not now.
And just like that, Mrs Damien's entire face lit up. "Luciana, darling!" she exclaimed, rising to greet her as if she were the returning queen of some lost empire.
